Um, I remember playing the other Sega 3d game, it was a fighting game. Anyway I wouldn't call it fake. Was like a hologram, way more 3D than the movie Avatar for example, and no need for headache inducing glasses.
Yeah I worked on Hard Drivin', but not Race Drivin' (where I worked, we neither got the game or kit for Hard Drivin). And if I recall( I might be wrong), Hard Drivin' was the first driving game with force feed-back controls and the first driving game with a clutch pedal. Pretty ambitious for 1989.
they had this game at a 7-11 when i was a kid. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Wonder how much it costs for a working machine now?
@RhinoSanderson you can stull buy it if you lived in washington state. There's a store near me that sells nothing but arcade cabinets and games and they have this for about 2500.
At a local arcade I won a contest for who could beat the game with the highest score *I was the only one in the arcade who beat it!* - grand prize was a leather Bulls team jacket. I won & the coat is still at my moms house in her closet! LOL :) Great game for its time , would love to see a remake done on the next gen systems even if they arent in 3D - I loved this game! Thanks again!
This game sucked shit. The controls were unresponsive, the acting was corny and the costumes looked like something straight out of a high school drama production.
I would be facinated to know how it works if anyone can explain it? I'm in my 30's too and remember this game in the arcade, except I always thought it was a low flat tabletop game that you viewed from almost above, Is it done with a curvey mirror and a projection or sumink?
@CrustyBiker Close. It's a half of a bowl shaped mirror under a dark glass top. You are actually viewing a mirror image of a 19" Sony T.V. (not an arcade monitor). These games were crap. The glossy white material on the surface of the cabinet kept peeling off the wood., and the controls were a bitch to access when you needed to work on them.
@GIRlovesWaffles So if it's just a reflection of a flat screen, you cant really move left and right to see different angles of the characters, It only appears to move, but guys standing on your left and right will see exactly the same character angles as you?
@CrustyBiker Pretty much so. Your just viewing the same picture tube image from a different section of the half bowl shaped mirror. And if I recall, the video image was slightly stretched out top to bottom to keep the character in somewhat of the right aspect, and not look to thin in the mirror. (Mind you it's been many years since I worked on one, so I'm trying to remember as much about the game as possible.)
@GIRlovesWaffles Oh right! so as the title suggests, it is really fake-3D... but as I remember, it was quite good at first glance.. Did you work on all arcade machines, my favourite was the "Race Driving" one which sometimes went under the name "Hard Driving" but I think the race driving one had either a seat that moved or it was the fact that you had to use the clutch to change gears (3Pedals) oh and the wheel gave feedback when you crashed or went offroad, a novel idea in its day..lol!
I loved this game. I always tried to look up the princesses' skirt (i was about 8) the hologram fooled me. Think this and Virtua Cop were my favorites.
I remember this game in arcades. I'm in my 30's now, but I would still try to look up her skirt. The day I wouldn't want to is the day I want someone to kill me.
its on dvd now, with 3d glasses, gets poor review, but im buying it anyway, since i used 2 play it. 1 pops up at the local arcade auction, once in awhile superauctions . com 2 check 2c if there are auctions every 3 months near u. very cool time, play any working game for over 2 hours, usually 100's there. think there are a couple videos of superauctions on utube.
i love this as a kid I'd just watch it for hours, i didn't like the game but it was so cool because of the projection I watched it and looked in side I wish I can make one for watching tv or playing ps2!
hi u have 2 be fast a this game or ur dead in a min as hard as dragons layer, first three levels are easy but when u get passed the trader ur unable to get any more time revrese cubes, which is a pain, finished this 3 times in over a 500 trys as when u get near the last stage there is no rythme like there is on the 1st 3 levels, knacked my wrists playin this every sunday afternoon in scarborough, this has come out on a dvd game disk put the controls are so slow
I saw this one years ago. 90's arcade oddities like these and PC CD-ROM games from back then were so grassroots in design, story, production value... not so any longer.
Hardest. Game. Ever.

Talk about an amazing looking game! This game was so tough as a kid though. I remember the timing of turning and shooting being insanely frustrating.
