  • Absolutely one of my favorite songs by someone I consider to be both an artist and a person of the highest intelligence, integrity and insightfulness. Second Contribution, the album from which this song originates, simply changed not just my life, but me. It opened me to a deeper and richer way of seeing, knowing and loving. Health, Love and Clarity, my old friend, and the same to all your new and old fans. - Miles

  • awesome!!!! thank you for this juwel!

    THANK YOU!!!!

  • I just saw him last month in Phoenix. He can still sing. And he was very nice----signed anything you wanted, shook your hand, let you take pictures with him. A real gentleman.

  • there is simply NOTHING even close to this tune. Lyrics, dynamics, feeling, the artist, nothing comes close.............saw him in Austin, Texas in the mid 1980's and he invited someone from the audience to come up and play a few tunes with him.....surely it must have been an old friend.....

  • This man profoundly affectively impacted my life. I will never forget this music.

    Taiter

  • it gets no better than this

  • I am a singer/songwriter from Ireland who now lives in Italy and I was playing a show a couple of days ago and there were a few people from the music industry in Italy there...after my performance they said I reminded them of a few different artists and one of them was Shawn Phillips.. I had never heard of him to be honest but now that I have, I am happy to have been compared to him and I have found some new music to listen to... strange how life brings you places and shows you new things...

  • I only discovered him in rural Quebec where he still has quite a following among the aging hippies! Quality.

  • We act like the industry was better back then. He wasn't that popular then. This has been and will always been in the underground, it has never been consumed in the main stream. This song never made the billboard 100, and his highest topping single was at like 93. Not for nothing though, he made a ton of money, took care of his finances, lives comfortably in South Africa doing what he loves, still tours, and has the respect and adoration of millions of fan, and accolades by the critics.

  • Shawn, Shawn,Shawn, i loved you then, and i love ya now. No one's voice can compare to the beauty of yours, thank you over and over again for the gift of your voice and soul.

  • This is one of my all time favourite songs. Mr. Phillips, you need to come to Vancouver Island.

  • è da pelle d'oca!

  • I Love u Luo

  • he'll be in San Antonio in October 2011 at Sam's Burger Joint

  • a friend of mine named her son after hin

  • I remember him from the 70's

  • Used to listen to Shanw alot when I was in the army. Still do but how how come You dont see His "First Contribution" songs.

  • he will be at Space in Evanston Il (chicago) July '11.

  • This is my name....

  • Takes me way back to the Laurie Auditorium At Trinity University in San Antonio,TX early seventies. We saw Shawn there a few times , The first time was mind opening. He would hit notes i did not even know were possible.I have never forgotten that first feeling of freedom when I first heard him play. One time he played a sitar. It was such a informal setting he said that most sitar players had a small container of coconut cream., but he just used his face oil. When are you coming back Shawn ?

  • This incredible talent has gone undiscovered for far too long.

  • @terrryc under-discovered, actually terry. There are those who were paying attention back when, and still get it !! I would give the gift of loving music like this to the young people of today if it were in my power to do so!

  • J'adore cette chanson je la trouve tres tres bonne

  • i used to love this song so much in my youth, i loved singing it too. sweet memories, thanks for posting.. a ray of light on you

  • When I came back from the war in Vietnam, after three years of battleling for a lost cause, the anger in me was healed by this man, and he shall forever be my brother...for their is a kindness in his song that is beyound profound for those who would but choose to listen...

    Russell

  • @jpta56

was you a combat veteran tracking the VC and killing them or was you a base soldier?

  • @jpta56 In my opinion you were doing a wonderful thing, you were fighting against the spread of brutal, cruel Communism. This song always touched me also..................Jeff

  • Wow what a coincidence i was thinking about a name for a son in the far future (im just 18) when all of a sudden i thought of Shawn Phillips. The funny thing is i didnt even know there was an artist of this name until now. The reason why i picked that name is because my middle name is phillips and my best friends middle name is Shawn. Now i discovered another great music artist, god i love music.

  • His voice is amazing.

  • Hmmmm.....4:51- 5:00 really sounds nice!

  • Makes me cry...

  • Shawn ... Your voice and songs were and still are some of The Best Ever... People tell your favorite club to bring this wonderfull musician to your town.... I was lucky enough to see him years ago and my heart is still touched... Thanks Shawn from the bottom of my heart...

  • Shawn ... your voice and songs were and still are some of The Best Ever.... People tell your favorite club to bring this truly talented musician to your town...

  • STILL GOOOD AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

  • Shawn is one of those musicians whom most people don't know about - but if you know about him, you're an avid fan. Myself, been a fan since the '70's. Have seen him twice in concert... hopefully more in the future.

  • This was given to me as someone i should check out and to be honest i am amazed that i had not heard of this man before.I am pleased to have have had the chance to broaden my musical horizons by hearing such a soulful song as this.Bravoooo to you my phillips.

  • I bought the album with this song on it when I was 17 yrs old and played it until it was literally worn out. This song is so beautiful and his voice is truly hypnotic. His music was an anchor for me when I was young and very lost. Thank you Shawn.

  • @Xenapage Me too... you have said it perfect... yes, Thank you Shawn from the bottom of my heart...

  • koiuytrn

  • What an amazing artist.....saw Shawn in Phoenix back in the early 70's....Please somebody post "I Took a Walk"................

  • I am in love with this song)

  • Who in hell would give this great vid 2 thumbs down. no accounting for some peoples taste!

  • I am seeing him in Minnesota next week and I have been listening to him for 35 years now. I am so JACKED UP and excited to see him again. I saw him when I was in high school and I'm now in my 50's. He is AMAZING.

  • I love Shawn and this song.

What group was he with back in the seventies-or somewhere around that decade?

  • Nice use of the dynamics by Shawn, but he never could sing into a mic to satisfy a VU meter. Plus the singing of the RRRRRRs.

Still love the guy, his cassettes got me laid many times in the mid 70s.

  • @ktel60 I was born in '91 and Shawn has still gotten me laid. "Woman" is gonna be playing in the background of lovemaking for decades to come.

  • Check out a video of Shawn Phillips performing London Town during a private concert. Just click my user name and watch the main video on my channel.

  • Amazing voice! I saw him at the Jazz Cafe in Camden (London) in 1997! He was great. My Dad has been a fan of his for years and took us to see him. What a musician. We met him after the gig and he was such a nice guy too!

  • Absolutely wonderful. Takes me all the way back to the seventies. A true "Texas Treasure". You are truly missed here. What does it feel like to have your own "genre"?

  • I used to listen to various SP songs on 8 track while driving all around the province of nova scotia. this song was a memorable one, as i was such a young man then.

    There are others of course.

I love so much of his music, as I listened to it at many bifurcatin points.

    "Good Job" Shawn!

    Thx.

  • i just finished playing wii with shawn phillips tonight no joke. he's touring with the band the nexxx in quebec (which is my mom and step father's band. he's so down to earth and then he sang this song at practice.... everyone cried. it was so beautiful.

  • @IMMALONGSLAPYOU hey lina you will be there tommorow in st-agathe ?

  • Last song he played last nite in Buffalo...there is nobody like him like him....and a really nice person!! Beautiful!!!!!

  • what a voice...

  • great song!

  • Memories of early war years here in Lebanon..1975..used to listen to Shawn and other artists in the shelters while bombs were falling all around outside.. Remember I had a turntable I fixed to opereate off a 12v battery source.. One of my first romances too......life is but a dream...live it to the max...while u have time..Cheers.

  • A-W-E-S-O-M-E !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • His music is some of the most beautiful I have ever heard. I will never get tired of listening to his songs. Absolutely incredible.

  • this is simply fantastic. especially the crescendo at the end.

  • i listened to Shawn Phillips since I was in my early 20's and am now 57. Was sooo glad I found this. It's been a long time.

  • Listen up kids this guy sums up the hippie freaks of the 70s, beautiful girls would go wild for this type of music, so he never changed.

  • that guy is not just driving an ambulance. He did that long time ago in montreal at his debut, but he was a first respondant voluntary in the us. I also intend a fire withexercise with that guy in 1999 in quebec. He was amoung the fireman for extinguishing the fire.

  • This song is absolutely incredible! But what about her voice .. Simply superb! !!!!!!!!!!

  • monumentally boring!!! sorry dude but where are you at. the lyrics are questionable and disjointed, the melody is amiss,......I can`t find anything to commend this. no wonder he disapeared into oblivion.

  • I had the privilege of seeing him live in a very small pub about 10 years ago in Gatineau, Quebec. Needless to say, it was phenomenal if not spiritual.

Outstanding musician. And a hero - he's a naval sea rescue officer in South Africa.

  • What are you smoking? Shawn lives outside of Austin, TX ... the only rescuing he's ever done is driving an ambulance part time when he's not out doing gig here and there, now and then.

  • F.Y.I. he's not smoking anything and he's correct: SHAWN PHILLIPS DOES actually reside in South Africa (Port Elizabeth, to be more exact) and he IS a volunteer for the N.S.R.I.....back at ya !

  • @SHAICAPPA Sean could live on the space station so far as 'we' know. Jesus did tell him he was a spaceman, afterall. . If he NOW resides in SA or on board the space station I wish him all the best - he's a angelic gandharvan (in spite some of his worldly habits). Peace.

  • A CHOM fav...Montrealers will know what I mean

  • CHOM ROCKS 97.7

  • @beejaymtl53 Very true! But they never play him on the air. :(

  • Growing up in Montreal in the sixties/seventies, this man was a god, today in Toronto no one has ever heard of him!

  • I'm curious, why was he strange?

  • I like shawn, some of his stuff gets really weird! But I like it.

  • so you think that language is just fine to use in front of any child over the age of 3?.....and I'm a moron?.....bet you have a pony tail too ;>)

  • How come you don't hear popular songs on the radio that have substance, soul and beauty anymore? It frustrates me because I know there are musicians/song writers out there who are capable of songs of this caliber, but unfortunately they don't find their way to the radio.

  • You're so right! I thought I was the only one to think like this...

  • @PoutinePete Anymore? I haven't really heard them on the radio in over 30 years. Disco, heavy metal, new wave, rap and MTV came in and killed most all of it. Shawn Phillips never got any serious radio play, either. Occasional late nite dj's slipped on a song or two. Radio has been a vapid artistic black hole for decades.

  • @PoutinePete It's because the music industry plays by their bottom line, and apparently their bottom line benefits most of all from the music of today. I love it all, even the stuff kids listen to today, but there is a huge gap where there used to be music from the soul. I can't think of a bigger blessing that to have had music like this growing up, helping to make us into thinking, feeling people, quenching our thirsty souls!

  • One of my all time favorite songs - I loved it in the 70's and I still love it now!

  • She was waitin' for her mother at the station in Torino and you know I love you baby but it's getting too heavy to laugh...

  • stupitidity is priceless!

  • I have been a Shawn Phillips fan since the late 70's . Went to several concerts in Houston, Tx. He was/ is an amazing performer. I love him so.

  • my friend that knows shawn phillips named Joe played his cd for me and i fell in love with his music ever since. he is so creative.

  • A perfect example of how the 70's talents produced music that never ages..still singing strong all these years later.

  • Wonderful really a wonderful song!!!

  • This song really reminds me of my brother who just turned 22 today - he loves Shawn Phillips more than most would think possible.

  • Shawn Phillips is truly amazing in his powerful deliverance of his music. His lyrical prowess is unbending and I had the opertunity to see him in concert on May 4th here in mpls, mn at the Guthrie theater, wow, he still has it after all these years. Get to see him again in July in St Cloud on the 30th. His DVD from the 2008 reunion concert held at the MN Zoo titled "Living Collaboration" is out, its a DVD of wonderment and awesomeness, go purchase it, you'll be very pleased indeed.........

  • I would love to hear 'We'. Please help me. San Antonio loved Shawn Phillips.

  • I saw Shawn in concert in Chicago back in the 70's. He was amazing! Thanks for the memories.

  • A much under rated and under noticed performer. I have loved Shawn Phiilips for years. Thanks for posting.

  • Wonderful.

  • i really enjoyed this video.....love second contribution, which is the only lp i have -- gonna get more.....there's a term kids use called 'freak folk' -- i wonder why shawn is never cited as a primary mover and shaker of outsider folk.....though understated, there's quirk and innovation in his work.....hey, if any of you are bored check out my humble little youtube video site (which features my 'folk music')......thx.

  • Shawn was introduced to me when i was 18 by Linda Zack ,the first and only love of my live, my first girl friend. it took place in 1977 in Israel. we used to sit in the sofa and listen to Second Contribution over and over.Linda got back to Montreal and i got back to Sâo Paulo.Never heard from her again.Never let pass one single day without thinking of her and i am always listening to this and to other Shawn's albums so we can be together in Spirit. He's much beyond his time.wish Linda was here

  • Two words for you : Facebook search! Good luck! ;-)

  • can't you use your energy to recreate that feeling, in a different but still powerful way, with another woman?? however unique linda zack is, there must be another person person who can make memories with you. 1977 was a LOOOOONG time ago. it is time to stop dreaming of the past and to have feelings anew so that you can share yourself with someone else again. you also sound unique and you should share your energy with someone who might be waiting for you too.

  • i did try for all these years, but the power of that woman still lingers on

i hope some day, i'll be able to tell her what i have been keeping inside of me since the last time we've been together and a bob dylan song could express what i have been feeling - "if you see her say hello"

  • i live in montreal if u want to look her up in the book id be happy to do it for u

  • I will be celebrating 35 years of marriage with my husband next February. it is our song .Those memories of making love and falling in love rush over me . Think I'll go kiss and make up for lost time. Thanks for the jolt..

  • WOW this song is fantastic . Used to listen in my dorm room at Schreiner College Kerville TX ... 1972-73.... He is a rare talent ...

  • I was doing exactly the same thing, except I was in Austin in my dorm at Dobie. Love it! Really just jerks me back to there and then.

  • Last time I saw Shawn he was an EMT in Marble Falls Texas. He played at a little bar in San Antonio, probably in the late 90's.

  • As great now as he was years ago. I wish he would perform in Fort Worth (NOT Dallas).

  • I've seen this man 7 times in various venues back in the 70's. I have never been disappointed. An amazing songwriter , musician and singer.

  • shut up. everyone knows hes good. shut up

  • Truly unique and methodical. An artist who is quite a joy to listen to.

  • Shawn just finished his tour, so it will probably be a little while. He usually comes to North America approximately every 18 months.

  • @ShawnPhillipsDVD ...no change he will come to Switzerland some time? I can't afford to come to SA, but I would love to see him live :-)

  • Comment tu vas Shan? Quand reviens-tu à Montréal? Tu nous manques tellement...

  • Such an incredible voice, musicianship and songwriting. I like many others here, grew up listening to him in San Antonio and Austin circa '71/72. I remember hitchhiking all over just to see him. To listen to Shawn with headphones was like going to heaven.

  • I really love this song

    and his interpretation !!

    GReat

  • I have loved this man and his music since I was 16, he is still FANTASTIC. I even got to kiss him on the cheek once in San Antonio,he is so sweet!

  • I swear I wore this Album out in it's day playing it over and over OMG. He had the kind of music that could just take you to that special place what Memories Love this Man and his incredible music and Talent Thank You!!!!!

  • come check out my classic live performances of Shawn on my channels joelsamuelpresents and bscactus- welcome to my show!

  • In school at Schreiner college Kerville Texas . Drinking white wine in the dorm room listing to this song. What memories whata song 1973

  • I humbly apologize for hurting Shawn's feelings with my previous post and I hope that my callous remarks don't impair his efforts to attain his trademark earnestness during future performances.

  • No need to apologize. I deleted that little side conversation primarily because it was not really relevant to the video, no other reason.

  • thats life, what can i tell you...

  • Completely great.

  • Love this song! Heard it when I was very young! 30 years later, I still love it!

  • makes me cry..... love it x

  • i was 13 the first time i heard Shawn Phillips

  • I saw Shawn Phillips in the late 90s in Montreal at a concert on the Mount Royal. I must have been 8, second contribution has been the most influencial record of my life . They dont make albums like that anymore or titles that long anymore!

  • SUPERBE!!!!!!! Becs à Dominic de Gabrielle

  • belle petite musique :)

  • I wish I could go see him in Toronto tonight ( 4/3). But I'll see him in Rochester in June, I hope. I've seen him 8 x's & I'm so glad he's touring again. Amazing as ever, Shawn!! Love your music & your spirit. She Was Waiting At The Station For Her Mother In Torino And You Know I Love You Baby, But It's Getting Too Heavy To Laugh ( longest song title ever, right?? Otherwise known as "Woman")

  • First heard this on an underground FM station in Minneapolis in the early 70s just after I got drafted. The music and yourself are still sounding great.

  • There is nothing else you can say but..WOW

  • I think I bought his album about 6 times and friends would steal it! I still have my last one I bought. I saw him when I was a sophomore in high school ... Laurie Auditorium in San Antonio, TX maybe 1972?

  • I was at that same concert. :)

  • wat a incredible voice!

  • Wasn't it just last week that a relative stranger blew my mind by asking me if I knew of a song titled "She was waiting for her mother at the station in torino and ya know i love ya baby but it's getting too heavy to laugh"...and didn't I blow his mind right back by saying "You mean the one by Shawn Phillips?"

a long time favorite...and an amazing live offering.

Thanks for posting Mr Phillips work here...up till now there has been a huge hole on You Tube that no one but this cat could fill
