Loved this. I read how close Judy and Margaret were while filming "The Wizard of Oz". All the laughs and how important this film is to Judy and her fans. Her first starring role. Hard work, yes, but this was HER film. As far as her relationship with her Mother-she was controlling, yet overly protective of her youngest daughter. She didn't want her to grow up and leave her. Judy always said her Mother was a lonely and determined woman. As for the pills-nobody knew they were so dangerous back then.
A great reunion between Judy and my dear friend:Maggie Hamilton..I'm just sorry that I never met Judy or Ray.My mother was going to take my brothers and I to see "Come Summer"with Maggie Hamilton and Ray Bolger..but the show closed and we never got to see them on stage on Broadway..Damn It!
Somewhere I read a posting by someone who said Judy sounded like a phony. Judy had a great quick and witty sense of humor and She never cheated her fans and had no reason to put on an act. Her personality and mannerism and emotions are what helped make her the Greatest. Sure there are many singers that've come before ,during & after Judy Garland , but they didnt have the undefinable quality. Back then many stars used the word "Dahling & Marvelous. Judy was larger than life. Great clip!
What Chemistry Judy has with Margaret.!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The Wizard Of OZ is the best picture and to hear the audience go wild hearing and seeing these two icons gave me chills..
@youtuuberoxx She was a heavy smoker. Drugs and alcohol doesn't damage your voice as much as cigarettes. But all three caused her death.
I feel sorry for her. If she was just an average person and not in show business, she wouldn't be taking any of these things. The studio and her mother made her addicted to these bad habits.
@saolili This, I think, is the greatest misconception about Judy... that she really wanted to be an average person, perhaps a housewife, cooking. That she was meek, easy to manipulate. Unless a lot of legitimate biographers are lying, that is not accurate. Still, the victim legend persists, something Judy didn't exactly discourage. "Sympathy is my business," she'd say. True.
@defundthewar With a beautiful voice like Judy Garland, it needs to be utilised. Luckily she didn't waste it in the kitchen and doing household chores.
It's sad that things started to go downhill towards the end of her life. Just listening her conversation with the Witch makes me feel sorry for her. It's hard to believe that this is Dorothy, the small and meek.
@saolili Aside from the voice, there was that wonderful acting talent. Throw in dancing, too. Barely out of toddler age, she was full of show business abition. No, nobody made her do anything... although fans, especially the younger ones not born before Judy died, buy into a lot of funny ideas about her, generally
the abused victim business. When she went downhill, it is because she wanted to go downhill, and
@defundthewar Yes, she was quite an entertainer with anything she did.
Judy Garland wanted to be in show business, but not be overworked in show business. Many sources say she was abused, and not just one. Even Mickey Rooney, who worked with her more than anyone, didn't like how the studio treated her.
@saolili Every source that says she was abused got their info from Judy herself. If Judy tells someone, "LB Mayer fondled my breast"- this was one of her favorites- and that person repeats that, that is not corroboration. The oft-repeated story Judy would tell about her and Mickey being knocked out with sleeping pills, put to bed, awakened in 3 hours to work again, has never been confirmed by Rooney. Still, it is a tribute to her talent that she is viewed the way she preferred.
@defundthewar If they got their info from Judy Garland herself, then that's straight from the horses mouth isn't it?
I wouldn't be surprised if he groped her, because this isn't something to say if it wasn't true.
I think she is exaggerating about sleeping for 3 hrs, but she wouldn't have got much sleep during shooting her movies. Ray Bolger said that The Wizard of Oz cast needed to get up early for work and arrive home late, so that pretty much tells us that she didn't get much sleep.
@saolili Most or all MGM stars would say they were overworked and underpaid, and this is true. But the stories of groping, her mother threatening to tie her to a bedpost and beat her, locking her in cupboards... these are stories Judy repeated so often that she may have come to believe them. Drugs can do this, but then there was her remarkable acting ability. That so many, including you, are taken in so long after her death, proves again her worth as a consummate actress-storyteller.
@defundthewar You do have a point that Judy Garland has a great acting ability and drug issue, so she is capable of lying or over-exaggerating the stories in her life, but I read about it then I use my gut instincts.
I believe the story about groping her. Those days you can get away with it, and being the most powerful man in Hollywood helps. Her mother Ethel Gumm wasn't a witch like Judy says, but she seems like a tough mother who wanted discipline, and threatening Judy made her listen.
@saolili Ethel's horrible crime was wanting Judy to do normal household chores, like her non-famous sisters. She wasn't a barrel of laughs, but you're right, she wasn't a witch. That Judy's acting could bypass people's common sense and go straight to the gut is exactly what I praise about her. The groping story is absolute nonsense just on the face of it, there were whores, bit players, and more beautiful girls for groping, but Judy could cast a spell, make you forget logic, common sense.
@defundthewar It's more than just household chores, she was also strict during rehearsals and performances. Ethel Gumm was a single mother so she was very much controlling, the family also needed money.
The saying "Like mother, like daughter." To me, Ethel's behaviour paralled Judy. Judy Garland loved her kids, but there were occasions when she attacked them or treated them badly. Her kids say positive things to protect her image and also because they truly love her. Judy never forgave Ethel.
I think we've been hogging the board too much, so I'll end here. Judy had a tendency to blame those close to her when things went wrong. It could be her mother, Mayer, Minnelli and whatever husband she had at the moment. There's a lot of mythology about Judy, most of it of a spineless, timid, easy to bully nature. I think Judy liked that, encouraged it... the victim card. But it was not true.
@defundthewar Yes she did like to blame people, particularly the studio boss and her mother because they ruined her life when she was young. No children wants to take pills and work their butts off, unless adults force them to do so.
As for husbands, they didn't have a say in anything, she was a woman who likes to be in control in her relationship, that's also the reason why her relationship with MGM and CBS wasn't really a happy one in the end.
@defundthewar As for the groping story, Judy Garland was quite pretty when she was young. Well there were whores and more beautiful girls, however Judy spent a large chunk of her teenage years at the studio, so he saw a lot of her.
I'm surprised that's all he did, and that he didn't sleep with her, considering she slept with many men in her days. Or maybe he did, but Judy doesn't want to say it because it will make her look bad.
give me a break, Judy worked harder in her first 20 years alive on earth than margaret hamilton did in her first 40 years , so of course Judy aged faster . poor dear never probably had a vacation , a real one. all she needed was intervention out of love and a a healthful diet and good agent, she could be alive today enjoying her grand children and the accolades from fans.
@ImInBetween many people always believe that no copies of (deleted or lost )broadcast television survives, but in fact many local stations recorded the shows when they were broadcast and of course the goverment kept copies of all television and radio broadcast stored away in intelligence agency files.
@etrax2000 - Very interesting. So does this mean that a copy of both shows that Judy did with Merv Griffin could exist somewhere? If it is, I would pay millions to see it, as the rest of the fan community would do too :)
@ImInBetween Check with local stations that aired the shows that you are interested in, especialy east coast major markets, here in philadelphia, we have in our broadcast archives shows that were broadcast back in the 1940's. also advertisers are ofetn given copies of broadacst whn their commercials were inserted into programs both for the shows and to determine if that show or a series would be suiteable for their products.
@ImInBetween This isn't exactly the whole show, but there is a snipet of the two of them together during this show at some point on here watch?v=bZEWw0dR7rk

Margaret Hamilton is around 20 years older than Judy Garland, yet she sounds younger than Judy.
She has a beautiful singing voice, and singing all her life has taken its toll on her voice.
