part 2, decorating a clay vase with flowers

Really helpful video. I'm just starting out in a home studio, years after basic ceramics training as part of my degree course in education. I've done leaf and flower forms on porcelain pots in the past and this will really help me refine my techniques. What glaze do you use? Do you mix your own or is it commercially bought? I love my pieces when they are bisqued, but often like them much less after glazing - which is a shame given the amount of time they take to build (I am a perfecftionist!!).

Another great couple of videos David. I like the way they turned out with the green celadon glaze. While watching I was thinking that this would also be interesting if the flowers were porcelain and the body a dark stoneware or vice versa. I wonder if one could make the porcelain the consistency of frosting and use cake decorating techniques to make roses etc. This would also work well using the flat side of your larger oval pieces as a pallet. Thanks again for the inspiration.

I do have a question, how are you keeping everything moist enough from making the stems/flowers to putting them on the pot? I'm having a real challenge with my clay drying way to fast. Thanks!

There are a few variables with the clay drying out too fast. How hot and dry is it where you are and how fast do you work. It takes me about 45 mins to make all of those pieces, the clay is about right when I start to apply the pieces. If they start to dry I just mist them with water. Remember you don't have to have so many pieces on a pot, especially to start, work up to an elaborate form, start simple. Some of my favorite pieces have had very little decoration.
