  • If all music would be destroyed, wiped off the earth, erased from our memories, all but this piece, then this would be the crying over That, and everything would be fine, we would be fine.

  • This is so beautiful. Heard it in the trailer of Silent House, but I had heard it before in the trailer of the film Gerry with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. *(goosebumps and tears)*

  • I don't feel lonely today. Thank you Arvo Part.

  • What a gorgeous, gorgeous, piece of music

  • Can't believe they used this for the horrow film Silent House! It's beautiful not horrifyingly chilling!

  • Pleasant, insubstantial, rather trite, inoffensive. I welcome negative feedback/death threats for these views. .

  • Listen with eyes closed and feel closer to the music...beautiful.

  • Yeah, not good comments here. Check out the comments on pop music. I made a comment about comments on a pop number. Youtube allow a guy to send me an email slam about me comment. Call me everything in the book post it here but Youtube sending me a crappy response - over the top. I wish some of those people could rebukes for using f words.

  • Beautiful. I'm tearing up a little.

  • La Casa Muda turned this into the creepiest sounding song of all time.

  • Stop reading the comments

  • like if the movie Silent House brought you here!

  • I could compare my music to white light which contains all colours. Only a prism can divide the colours and make them appear; this prism could be the spirit of the listener. (Arvo Pärt)

  • @WhiTeShaRk8000 > this is more beautiful than this piece

  • Learning about music is only good when learning how to create it yourself.

Please never learn how to interpret music, because you are setting yourself up for narrow-mindedness. Don't cut yourself off from emotional interpretation.

Anyway, you guys can read all the comments you want, just feel what the music makes you feel, you don't even have to consider anyone else's view, especially if they claim to be more qualified. They are less qualified due to bias. Unlucky fucks.

  • Okay this is just emotional and too beautiful. Oh to the youtuber 3 comments below, it's nice that you have a genuine knowledge of what you do and don't like but may I correct you that it isn't a voilin playing. It is a cello.

  • @Mimie16100 Haha good call

  • i heard this music frome a film its name -elegy - and i love it soo much

i always ask about this music and no one heard it before

its so sad enjoy it ...!!!!

  • Arvo Pärt is from Estonia. I'm proud. :' )

  • Life!!! what a miracle... Thank you for sharing this song.

  • I always think about life. Nature, the human race, and space. This adds deeper meaning. I feel so small.

  • @TheT33g If you don't know anything about music, then just sit down, listen, and enjoy. @KarlAmade obviously has some musical knowledge. I know this because I am majoring in music as well. Besides the fact he is entitled an opinion, just like you did (very rude opinion at that). @Kosmischesynth nailed it on the head. Criticism is necessary for great art.

  • Criticism is necessary for great art.

  • This recording is far far from the best - it totally lacks the depth and humbleness of which mr Pärt's music is supposed to have. Being more precise I'm criticizing the violinist's use of vibrato. When it finally comes to all - the note itself is beautiful, there is no need of adding extras as vibrato. Pärt writes his music mainly for early music performers, do you know why?

    Guess :)

  • @KarlAmade stop being so negative this piece is perfect i dont reckon you could make a song half as good so fuck off with you nit picking

  • @TheT33g

I was not being mean, as opposed to you. I've studied Pärts music for a long time, we have even exchanged letters together. I have not said that the piece is imperfect, of which you accuse me of. Please read my comment once more. I just said that if the violinist didn't use that much vibrato the performance it would be perfect. I WAS NEVER CRITICIZING THE COMPOSITION... Pärt writes for early music performers.

    And do you dare me?

  • @KarlAmade I agree, the violin is too overpowering for my taste. Criticizing art is a complex issue. When it comes to re-producing an artists original piece, authenticity is necessary in order to properly convey the emotions the artist intended and here the excessive vibrato seems to compromise that. However, re-interpreting art is different, and a musician's subjective emotional interpretation can be equally beautiful. I prefer the former but it depends on what you relate to more.

  • ...of atoms

    motion

    and the void.

  • Wow, I love this.

  • The amazing film "Wit" brought me here.

  • A real man will walk through fire and to the ends of the universe to save someone but a coward in the name of love will only commit at safe grounds.

  • truly beautiful piece...

  • this tears at my heart ,if anyone can find solace in this Im glad

  • I came to this as Stars of the Lid (one of my favourite bands) are inspired by him.

    My god, that's beautiful!

  • a violin and a piano is all it took to make me shut up and listen for 4 whole minutes without interrupting.

  • 鐘鳴作曲法

  • i cannot undestand how can modern "pop" like lady gaga and rihanna be more viewed than something so timeless and irreplaceable as this, stunning.

  • He is an estonian :) I am too.. and im so proud of him :)

    very beauiful! (Y)

  • Worth living just to hear this

  • Beautiful! Thank you :-)

  • VERY beautiful and special - thanks so much for sharing. Made me cry with joy and sadness.

  • The best part of this is not reading the comments

  • listen to the music of Urban Medeiros (Brazil). Beautiful !!!!!!

    Dra. Sylvia

  • Ive been listening to a lot of arvo part and scriabin i play piano(and have been for 8 years) but im not sure if i should continue listening to scriabin it seems he might be a bit of a satanist. please somebody help me. Is it wrong for a christian to listen to music that was written by someone who doesnt believe in God like scriabin but the music has no lyrics just piano

  • @laderspike No mate, it's not wrong, don't worry. God is in everything regardless of whether we believe in him or not. Just enjoy the beauty of the music. All the best.

  • @laderspike stupidest question ever

  • @nicenora9196 Either you are the biggest troll or an incompetent fool. "Stupidest" is not even a real word. The proper superlative form would be most stupid.

  • @laderspike

Lol man, I'm an atheist and I love Arvo Part. His religious affiliation has no bearing on whether I enjoy his compositions, and if his music is inspired by his religion then so be it, it's still excellent.

  • @gavinplaysbass I love your comment. such is life. This piececof music is......... well just is. relax

  • @laderspike You will encounter many people that don't believe in God. Should you ignore them for that? No.

    Same with this.

  • I wish I could listen to this track when I pass away. A peaceful mind guaranteed.

  • Ilus muusika.

  • This is so beautiful!!

  • The guy behind the counter at my uni shop was listening to this when I went in earlier today. I'm so happy I accidentally heard about this man; his music is beautiful.

  • i envy this man, because this is how he saw things, i wish my mind was as peacfull

  • @sprtn0117brice I don't know if his mind is always so peaceful...listen to Fratres (for violin) - which is equally amazing, but on the other end of the spectrum I think.

  • @sprtn0117brice 'sees' things

  • So very beautiful.

  • If Arvo could only sing and pout like bieber- then he has it made

  • Beautiful.

  • every time I hear this melody, my eyes get all watery.

sometimes, when I just feel like crying, I turn up this song. My eyes are like waterfalls when I listen to this in the right mood.

  • Black on white, beauty slow motion, timeless. So basic and simple and yet profoundly meaningful. The absolute minimum with the most possible impact and force on the senses. A line continuous, a variation of shade a change of light. The merest dust of a feather from a pure white dove flying in absolute silence. Drops of rain falling from a rose petal and seeping into the soul. Emotions that cannot be defined in words, only in tears. The love of a child missed, the solace of grace and of peace.

  • this is not simply boring it's ... so try to imagine this: which relation has "Dallas" with literature? the same this thing has with music...

  • @yourockets3 This work of sublime music is beyond your ability to understand,.Your comparison to 'Dallas

"( whatever that is) with literature is obtuse to begin with, therefore your inane comment is null and void nonsense. Boring? Only to the dull witted.! .

  • @karmakomodia this work of sublime shit is under my ability of understanding. I'm graduate in composition and teach harmony: my pupils can write this thing in four weeks of studying. it's a weak melody over conventional functional harmony close to that used in commercial music. I don't want to say that Paert is an idiot, I'm saying this piece is nothing more that a school exercise. He can do more interesting thing, that I dislike but respect. this is beyond uglyness. dallas was a soap opera.

  • @yourockets3 you are arrogant and disrespectful.

  • @jhaam18 I was insulted by karmakomodia. I tried to be respectful in my first message - the point isn't that I don't like this piece, is not a matter of taste - I like Star Wars ( a lot) but I know it is not a masterpiece but only a blockbuster. One can dig this piece but have to know he's listening nothing more than an exercise on the same level of a pop song. and I'm too old to accept true arrogance of ignorant people who can liste only to trite music being sure they are spiritually aware and

  • @yourockets3 able to get an high level of "comprehension" while they are only able of digging commonplaces.

this piec is a sum of commonplaces. that's all, this is IN the piece not in my taste.

  • @yourockets3 call something "sublime shit" is arrogant. Your opinion and taste are respectable, and i think the music is more question of emotions and feelings; of course a complex structure in a composition is always great, but the simple is as amazing as the complex; I understand you don't like this or think is like a school exercise, but sincerely I see an arrogant acctitude, maybe I'm wrong

  • @jhaam18 I apologise for that expression :) I was angry ( not with Paert whom I respect, but with karma that insulted me) - talking about music I think that the point is to not confuse taste with criticism. I like a lot of trivial music, but I have to hundestand it's only entertainment. I can't accept to confuse entertainment or one's being moved with sublime art. it's a damage. I'm not arrogant, belive me. I simply feel bad when I see commonplaced confused with poetry.

  • @jhaam18 try to listen to Messiaen's "louange a l'eternitè de jesus" - it's in a sense confrontable with this piece: a simple melody with chordal accompainment - it's SIMPLE not POOR it's impossible to talk technically about it here, but listening would be enough to hunderstand what I mean.

And to be clear: even this piece isn't in my taste, but I know this is great music at all - despite my taste.

Arrogant is to say to someone - without knowing him/her - he's not able to comprehend something.

  • @yourockets3 How's the air up there?

  • @namron481 good why? if you want to think that superman is on the same level as Virginia Woolf you are free to do so - but please: don't put down the others simply saying they are snobbish.

it's stupid and simply just as saying that whom who like this "music" are nothing but idiots. I don't think so.

I think it would be better to have wider points of wiev on music - this piece at a certain point would simply reveal itself -listen more and moer diversificated music

  • @yourockets3 Oh Great Learned One, why are your grammar and spelling so poor?

  • @namron481 sei il solito cretino che pensa che siamo tutti inglesi o americani - la capisci questa lingua ? la sai riconoscere?

try to hunderstand where I come from? testa di cazzo - e prova poi a tradurre con google. English isn't my mother tongue and you show how stupid you are .... it's no so difficult to imagine: 3/4 of the world speak other languages

  • @namron481 ah ok you are from USA ... you are accostumed to think that the whole world reduces itself to your country. most of you can speak only english and go all over the world giving lessons of culture ( not to talk about freedom and democracy)

  • @yourockets3 All that venom elicited from so few words. Could that have something to do with the power of simplicity? Duh!

  • @namron481 it has to do with your arrogance. none of your comments was less than offensive. the power of semplicity. I suggested to listen to a piece of Messiaen's try to listen to that and then speak about semplicity.I respect and love a lot of things comeing from your country but often happens that people from USA can't even image that one haveing a bad use of english it could be mean that he or she can come from another country.this is etnocentrism and is really disturbing for foreigners

  • @yourockets3 This was originally about music. You started the arrogance. You have now insulted an entire people. Americans are all the same, aren't they? You have a big chip on your shoulder pal. I, for one ,would like to hear more of this "sublime shit" as you refer to it. Have a nice day. And you are so good at reading my mind. Bravo!

  • @namron481 my dear. I was attacked first only because I said I don't like this music. If someone says he/she doesn't like something I like I don't attak saying hesn't able to hunderstand.I apologised for that expression( sublime shit)and apologise for the bad expression on your people.I'm humoral. but I know when I'm wrong and have no problem in admitting. you insulted me three times and insulting one because he talks badly your language is just the same as insulting a whole people think to this

  • @namron481 and mind to this, too. I have friends from USA, even an uncle, I know your literature and your music too ( a lot). what do you know about my country? can't you hunderstand how much aggressive is to attak one about spelling and grammar? how much aggressive is not to think he couldn't come from another country?

and just to try again to be friendly I suggest you another way to simplicity. look for Alvin Lucier on youtube. He's simple, too.

  • @yourockets3 I also apologise to you. By the way, I'm not American. I was born and spent my childhood in Europe. I have seen many countries and have seen everything from extreme wealth to extreme poverty. I try to judge people by what they say and do rather than who they are. And yes, I think Superman is not the same as Virginia Woolf. I repeat, simplicity has power.

  • Simply Stunning. Like waiting for my woman walking to me from afar.

  • Minimalists are artists who have neither the mental ability nor artistic desire to create purposeful, complex, integrated works. This is the musical equivalent of painting a stick figure with a frowning face in watercolor and hailing it as "minimalism".

  • @HotSo0P Minimalists are actually some of the most effective artists ever. The ability to bring such beauty out of barely anything is as great as writing a massive piano concerto. Please refrain from trolling on such amazing pieces as this. Ludovico Einaudi is a genius of a minimalist. and to even question their mental ability is a disgrace. watch him to show the emotion on his face. But no one needs your Unappreciative Stuck up your own arse tone. So please with respect. Bugger off

  • @AChrisVProduction I second your comment! ..With utmost respect .UH HotSo0p .. Bugger off you imbecile.

  • @HotSo0P

It's the end result which justifies minimalism, and in this case, it is a frail song but powerful nonetheless, in the way it stirs emotions.

  • Who played the violin? Who played the piano? Why only 4 minutes? Tasmin Little's version is more than 8 minutes. Not enough pictures for an 8 minutes slightshow? Its not satisfying in this manner.

  • Who thinks of abcs "Lost" when you hear it. I know I do.

  • Just chill.

  • scarey but brilliant

  • I'm playing this on piano with another guy on violin for my next school concert, wish me luck

  • @TheProNinjaz Good luck! You've got great taste.

  • @TheProNinjaz good luck! its an amazing piece to play. Enjoy it! xx

  • @TheProNinjaz Good luck! I wish people would play decent music at my school concerts. :7(

  • great

  • I love Pandora for sharing this beautiful song with me

  • Very, very beautiful!! Thank you!

  • most beautiful piece i've ever heard - made me tear up a little bit

  • Thank god they didnt play this in Shindler or id Cry "I could have got one more out" :'(

  • Where did you get this recording from? The last half of the piece is missing... But very beautiful nevertheless

  • super

  • Spiegel, Spike Spiegel.

  • I wrote a poem to this masterpiece I was so inspired by it... If anybody wants to read it just tell me. So you have something to go with this masterpiece.

  • I would be interested in reading your poem to this exquisite piece of music. Thank you

  • @famosadicto chill

  • Riga is not in Estonia, he was born in paide, that is in Estonia

  • What town is he from?

  • @jraider2 He is from Riga in Estland.

  • @jraider2 A small town called Paide in Estonia

  • A mirror within a mirror? - MIRRORCEPTION ;-)

  • Peaceful and addictve.

  • Again and again I come back here to listen to it! Has sort of become my lullaby!

  • So sad, so beautiful, so everything!

  • Simple and beautiful as it is human being in Estonain language - INIMENE. From people to people - inimeselt inimesele.

  • @matiro1 Thank you for telling us this! Fitting the beautiful music!

  • @KansenChan but seriously...how did Bjork bring you here?

  • @KansenChan Well played - both of you lol

  • @KansenChan thanks

  • that sucked

  • Trop peu de musiques aujourd'hui nous offrent cette lenteur.

  • I love this melody...it has a soul......

  • this composer is from ESTONIA... remember that remember that

  • This is such a beautiful melody. I first heard it in Century of the Self. I can unfortunately imagine it being used in an advert, which I wouldn't be surprised if it will be/already has.

  • namaste

  • Gerry..

  • @shimeonmorpheus All these other people don't seem to think so, therefore its not boring, but it maybe boring for you. Watch how you say things, say that you think its boring, not that it is boring

  • @TheProNinjaz words don't mean anything unless you give it value, there is a reason other people didn't give me a thumbs down already.

  • @shimeonmorpheus How are you supposed to give a word a value? And how can you tell? If you didn't mean it was boring, and were just saying it without a "value" then why say it? And your right, there are reasons why people didn't give you a thumbs down already, unless your trying to make it obvious that there is some particular reason to go against my comment. If that's so, then could you explain a bit more, I'm probably being a bit stupid for not realising.

  • @TheProNinjaz can i ask you question??

  • @shimeonmorpheus Of course

  • @TheProNinjaz thanks

  • @TheProNinjaz Political correctness is a prliminary stage of lie. If some guy says it's boring, let him say so. Of course it is his opinion, what else. Your entrance as a wise man is invasive, so you need a softening.

  • @zzausel I suppose so, I wasn't intending on getting all the popularity.

  • @TheProNinjaz May be I have been too sophistcated, so if you tried to understand, try it again, please.

  • @zzausel I apologise, but your confusing me. All I'm getting from you is that I'm wrong because being politically correct is a simple stage of lying and that its only just his opinion so let him say what he wants. I have no idea what invasive means. And with the second reply your telling me that you thought you might have been to sophisticated, so If I attempted to understand (which I did) try again? But if I didn't understand the first time why would that mean that I would have better luck--

  • @TheProNinjaz After you told shimeonmorpheus off I felt you need to be told off as well, but somehow there is no way. Nuff words now, let us listen to Pärt or Satie.

  • @zzausel I agree on both, I should have been told off for being a bit unfair and annoying and yes that's enough talking.

  • Respond to this video... --the second time if I don't know the words you are telling me? Anyway I request that you explain your reply please, or have I already got what you meant? Thanks.

  • @TheProNinjaz That's silly. There's no need to add IMO at the end of every sentence because it's obvious that the statement refers to a personal opinion not a fact. This is boring.

  • @deathsane Just being on the safe side :)

  • @shimeonmorpheus But the main point is that if values in words were taken seriously, I don't think that it would be very useful at all in life as I literately could be saying a load of words that don't anything. My point is that if someone says its boring, well, its not, they think its boring. Opinion. Same with me, I think this is an amazing piece of music. Or maybe I'm just getting the wrong idea about what your talking about with the whole 'value' thing?

  • @shimeonmorpheus If you want to stop arguing, please say so because I don't think many people here like arguments. Including me.

  • Stunningly beautiful and haunting melody, the man is a talent. So reflective, peaceful and yet emotive at the same time.

  • M,M,M...MMM

    NEBEŠKO

    POZDRAV IZNSLOVENIJE....

    PAPPAPAPAPAPAAA

  • The sad truth is that war is in our nature, but you think we would be smart enough by now to be able to prevent it. All our human advancements mean nothing if we don't know how to stop fighting each other.

  • If we only could speak to eachother by music...war would have no Part in history of mankind

  • i want this and fuer alina , played my mart, on my funeral ^^

  • @MrZombieturd Why don't you just simply listen to this music - over and over again - before your funeral?

  • @deboerdolf cuz i'm deaf

  • Yesterday I heard this beautifull melody for the first time. The occasion was a memory-service for a beloved man who passed away. What a beautifull melody

  • this is my calming down music

  • Got this from the Gus van Sant movie "Gerry." Fantastic.

  • Love this song.

Got home from a savage day at work and fell onto the bed.. Put this song on and I couldn't have been taken further away from the petty problems of daily life.

  • With lyrical homophonic simplicity, complemented by a gradual crescendo, Part tugs at the heart as only music of this stature can. Little wonder it often accompanies such emotionally overwhelming documentary as that pertaining to the holocaust.

  • Sometimes in life we find our escapism... Be it silent walks in autumn, maybe a novel next to the fire. But when your ears translate audio frequency code into our brains that provide aesthetically poetic simplicity of this kind, sometimes life seems to slow down just a little bit... and tap you on the shoulder to let you know you're really alive.

  • @Nwovance " sometimes life seems to slow down just a little bit" Could not agree more. I thought I was the only person who could swear that when you hear something as deeply moving as this the cars outside and the worlds revolutions just slow slightly and you feel at peace - for those few minutes everything else melts away and you hear no other sound.

  • This sound of true art pacifies every single cell of my body, every single piece of my soul, every single time I listen to it. It just creates this unique, heavenly feeling: finally, I´m home ... !
