believe me... the withdrawl from heroin is much much worse than having a cold/flu. plus the mental side.. you go through a rollercoaster of emotions in cold turkey and can feel suicidal, you cant sleep for daus even weeks, barely eat, one minute your sweating next your freezing, not to mention cramps, diarohhae, aches n pains.. the list goes on.. i can see the arguement for legalizing it, but not in a way that ppl who have never used can suddenly buy heroin, would need to be to help addicts
The Czech Republic followed Portugal to become the second European country to formally decriminalise drug possession this week, announcing specific quantities beneath which users will not be prosecuted.
usenpost's argument is not limited to persons of faith. More of concern is that others with the democratic authority to make everyone else suffer the criminal consequences of drugs directly and/or via their pocket, are conflating prohibition with tackling crime, as an alternative to tackling crime, for political purposes.
At the same time, the rest of us have to be free not to have these heroin people around us if we don't like. I'm in favour of geographically setting apart regions where people can go and have a different set of freedoms, without needing to make most people uncomfortable.
I've heard those facts about heroin use,too-- safe, and withdrawal is not a big issue. Since heroin related compounds are in fact, natural neurotransmitters, these might be more appropriate medication for certain mental illness than the standard toxic pharmaceuticals; opium, the natural source of heroin, was called the most useful substance in the materia medica before the drug hysteria.
Much drug-running is supported to fund guerrillas for gov't black ops. Catherine Austen Fitts.
Alcohol addiction and misuse is a problem to alcoholics and their nearest and dearest. Unless one wishes to live under severe limitations to one's liberty, the problem cannot be tackled by involuntarily diverting huge sums of other people's earnings in order to prevent an outcome for some via unavailability. The failed war on drugs costs the UK £9-19 billion per annum, with a 20% success rate for seizures. 60% is needed to make any impact. That's 10-20% of the NHS budget.
These are my views too. I am not a drug user, nor have I been impacted by drug users. Very few people are, which makes it immoral to hold myself and others hostage to drug users by those in government who insist that drug use is a problem requiring the waste of billions of Dollars and/or Euros.
It is derived from a number of studies written about the pronblem as it pertains to the effectiveness of prohibiting drugs at the expense of the taxpayer, the impact to freedom and arbitrary criminalisation based on subjective moral standards.
So long as junkies and alcholoics are not a problem to others by way of crime to support their addictions they are not a problem that government should be concerned with.
Alcoholics are a huge problem via drunk driving, Fetal alcohol syndrome, and in fact, alcohol withdrawal(if you ever get to that stage of addiction) unlike heroin withdrawal, is 50% fatal. Read Dr. Joseph Beasley. On the way to such a crisis, a significant minority of alcoholics will have seizures, and some will become permanently brain injured with Korsakoff psychosis.
Not favoring prohibition here, just pointing out that alcohol is quite toxic, physically and socially.

Very good points Charles. Sadly, usenetposts appears to be a religious fundamentalist, so common sense does not apply. What a shame.
