We just ended our last show yesterday :( But we had two Olives and I got to sing the I love you song, with olives mom and dad who are amazing singers (:
The story is that Olives mom is actually in the crazy house (asylum) and that her dad is mentally abusive so then olive sings this song about how her family is well fucked up really I know this cause in my school play im playing the dead beat dad yeah for me :/
@TeenTipsnTutorials On the very top note, if you can't nail it like that, you could sing it in a very quiet falsetto. Sing everything else in the forte, but the very last syllable (the high note), make it "drop off," so to speak. It actually works in that it adds dynamic contrast and emotion and all that other cool stuff and stuff. Work it sista
ok people, so I have a theory. Olives mother and father are in a huge fight, during this song and they admit that they still love each other, but it's all fantasy. I believe that the fight is reality. Earlier in the story it is revealed that Olives mom went to India for 9 months, so I think she cheated on the father and went there to have the baby! That's why they are fighting and that's the basis of this song!! BOOM!!
I relate to this character a lot, and I saw the show for the first time at the international thespian festival in Lincoln. I never cry in public. This was the first time I teared up around other people. After the show, I kept asking people what their fav song from the show was, and they said some funny one or something. When I told them that this was my favorite song, they were surprised. This will always be one of my fav. showtunes. Along with A home for you from Batboy :)
First of all thank you for posting this song. Secondly, I actually had to pull over the car I was crying so hard. It just brought up some weird stuff as a parent.
@sarahanneha Olive Ostrovsky and her mother is traditionally played by the character of Rona Peretti and her father is usually played by Mitch Mahoney
when i heard this song i wanted 2 cry the sencond time i heard this song i was with 1 of my good friend whos mom had just passed he started to tear up and all i could do was hold him
The first time I heard this song I was at the Flordia Thesoain festival (my first time in case your wondering) and the Pitnam County Spelling Bee was our first mainstage we got to see...I almost cryed when I heard it cause it was erry who well I realted. At that moment I was glad I was an actress so none of my fellow troupe members noticed.

This is my favorite song in the entire show. I just played Olive in a production, and there were some nights where I got so into the song that I almost started to get a bit teary. The harmonies are amazing, and this song is so important to Olive's character. It was a really pleasure to sing every night =).
this song will forever be my favorite song of the show. it is hands down the most heartfelt song of the whole show. and lets just face it... the harmonies in this song are killer
I saw this show for the 3rd time tonight. I love this song. It'a a great show, but for me this is the highlight. It's so beautiful, but the kind of beauty that makes you sad. Because this is the kind of tragically messed up ***t kids have to deal with. Set to eerie music.
I remember seeing this show when I was about ten and not taking much notice of it. I'm so glad I rediscovered it a couple of days ago, so far i've listened to this song alone around 10 times and it still gives me chills

Logan is that girl with the blond braids. She is very stressed, and has to gay fathers as parents.
Marcy Parks is an overachiever (the Chinese one) who speaks six languages, excels at everything, but is tired of being the best.
Olive is the cute girl with the parents who are always away, and she missed them all the time since they seem to not care about her. (This song proves that this is not true)
I disagree completely on the interpretation of this song. The word she's asked to spell is defined unreal, imaginary, etc. Which leads me to believe that this song is about what she wishes were reality, and as such, proves quite the opposite.
actually this song is Olive's vision. because this is all a vision. thats why she says at the end highly unrealistic and wildly fanciful after she spells chimerical. it says in the booklet for the CD Olive has a vision.
Jhudsonrox, I thought she was imagining her parents there!
Her mom is overseas and her dad doesn't approve of her spelling "obsession" so he doesn't come. That's why the word means "unreal, magical, etc." because none of the things she hears/thinks are real!
Because the little girls parents don't show up to the spelling bee she's been working so hard at. She almost wasn't allowed to do it since the entrance fee wasn't paid, but when she won second place she was able to play it. Her parents sing this about her during the show when one of her words come up. It's just emotionally connected to all of her feelings.
sorry i just know this because I've actually seen the movie that comes from. "Om Shanti Om" is an Bollywood movie from India :) Good movie. Really long, but really good and some good music!
This song brings back memories of my childhood going to math meets and no parents there with me. It makes tears swell in my eyes. I have fallen in love with the song and it has the same effects on me as the first time.

the 2 dislikes are Olive's real parents.

Actually, it's
"Mama, Mama, Mama
Shanti Shanti and *om*"
Om, the buddhist, Hundu sacred word (cause her mother's in India), and that way it rhymes with "How I wish you were home"

What he wants to take out on you so sad
