I went to Eddie Cockrans grave in 1996 ,he,s buried next to his dad frank who died only two years after Eddie in 1962. Karen Carpenter is in a crypt a 100 yards away from Eddys grave! I also remember coming home from junior high school and turning American bandstand and seeing Dick Cark upset talking about Eddies death. I guess that makes me old as the hills and twice as dusty!
I called the townhall where Gene is buried and they didnt even know who he was, he was the greatest, thanks to the British and Europeans for being great fans
To NitroburringDaddy: I agree that this is more of a Faron Young song, but you have to admit that Eddie does a great job on it. There was someone else in the
50s that recorded this song. His name is Sammy Jackson. He was never real popular, but he was a good actor and singer, not to mention soooo cute. No where near as good looking as Eddie though.
I was only 14 or so when he was singing, but we all thought he was about the coolest cat around. This is sure ironic he would sing this song, RIP my friend. We'll be along shortly.
This is one of my many favorite Eddie Cochran songs (or one that he did for you politically correct folks). if you could please give me the name of the CD that this song is on i would gretly appreciate it.
Anyway, I want to pay my homage to the late great Eddie. Been to Chippenham were he was killed. Been to Albert Lea, where he was born, they have at least a stone there AND I recommend a visit to the local museum there. Not everything about our hero but you can see the checkered shirt and black pants he had on the UK tour. That sweather from the stage act where he did "Teenage Heaven" is also there. Yep, it's red. Also other things there. Check it. OMG, was Eddie great....or what???
I'm from Bell Gardens ,went to the same schools as Eddie did, only a few years later. My Son still lives in Bell Gardens (he is 32 yrs old and listens to Eddie all the time.I used to go to the cemetary where Eddie is buried, there are a few that get together at his grave site on his Birthday and anniversary of his death but, you are right, his following is much bigger in England then here, thats to bad , he was truly one of the greats of early rock and roll , long live Eddie!
@missaprilm You're soo lucky! Wish I grew just where you did.... I agree, its so sad that only few people remembers Eddie... but until someone will, he won't be forgotten. Cheers from Italy. RIP Eddie
Let's send out get-well prayers to Eddie's former partner, Hank Cochran, who is recovering from surgery to remove cancerous tumors from his pancreas & lymph nodes (as of July 25) in a Nashville hospital. He has had great success as a songwriter.
I must add that this song was in fact also a recording by Eddie and Hank Cochran named the "Cochran Brothers" but note Hank was not related with Eddie
Hi guys, I coincidentally come across your discussion, so let me contribute some facts. As far as I know, Eddie startet very early with the Cochran Brothers in the early 50s. They formed a small Hill-Billy band touring around LA. "Pig Peg Slag" or so was one of their reordings. Eddie was also talented as an actor. Apprearances in the moovies such as "Go Johnny go", "untamed love" can be mentioned. But Gangerollo is right when he focuses on Eddie's popularity in the US and in the UK.
Cont...after that went to Clear Lake, Buddy Holly Boulovard (spells?, ballroom (closed) and to the crash site in that field. I will remember that day. Went to Chippenham in the 90's. The guys in nearest PUB knew who Eddie was. So sad to say, he's more forgotten in US than UK. Take care/Roland
I doubt it's Ed but then again it can be him. Hmmm... I belive Ed started as young as 16 singing. Albert Lea is a nice place. I was there 2 yrs ago with my relatives from Minn. They thought it was funny as I from a foreign country (I'm from Sweden)had to spell Albert Lea and not Lee and show them who Ed was. We went to that museum (forgot the name)and saw Ed's checkered shirt, golden vest and black leather pants from UK tour. Some golden recs there too. Was a memory stone where Ed was born.
Eddie dropped from school pretty early, I guess he spent most of his time in studios...I have no idea how many songs he recorded, but it is said he was only 17 when he did some of his songs. Maybe he was very young when he recorded this song, it would explain why you didn't recognize his voice.
You're sure? It is from the Guitar picker recordings, and only Eddie's name was on this track. Maybe it's the bad quality that make his voice sound different?
Yes, it's Eddie, I didn't know RoverTCB already posted this song, but it is Eddie Cochran. I have recordings older than this one, Eddie was just so talented and started so young, it's hard to imagine he made recordings so young. Info on the song:Musicians - Eddie Cochran: vocal and guitar - Art York: guitar - Conny 'Guybo' Smith: stand-up bass - Carl West: steel guitar - Bob Denton: vocal and guitar. Rehearsal session recorded by Chuck Foreman, at Bell Gardens (local hall) Los Angeles, Calif
you are quite welcome RoverTCB. You are right in your earlier comment. Eddie Cochran could basically play any instrument he laid his hands on, and he practically "lived" in the studios, was a master at overdubbing. It's all documented proof, he was way ahead of his time. Died way too young. Thanks for posting Eddie's material! I didn't know you had posted this one..didn't mean to step on anyone's toes..There's lot's of Eddie's stuff to go around, I never get tired of it! :)
It's sad to know that I'm one of the very few mexicans who still like rockabilly.
