IMO.....thanks for doing all the great vids, I appreciate your ideas. Just bought a nice piece of Tyvek for groundsheet possibility. It is SO VERY LOUD, I dont think I could use the material in the outdoors. If you do not have this material, try it out, you can buy a nice size piece for pretty cheap at ZPacks..etc, you will be amazed at how loud this stuff is. You could make these chaps for about 10 bucks, or dumster dive, or bring some coffee/beer to a construction dude.
@GromFranger I agree..the house wrap tyvek is VERY loud...I've tried to make tents and tarps out of it and stopped because of the noise. I think it's OK as a ground cloth...and the chaps and gloves soften up with time and don't make so much noise. You can get the softer tyvek used for kites...but it's not as durable or as water-resistant. What material are you talking about from Z Packs?
Fair play to you sir... I use Tyvek suits daily in my job... windproof, pretty water proof and warm... bit sweaty sometimes... bit like goretex :) ...... I had a black suit on one occasion.. must have been a special edition ....... if you think the chaps look strange, wait till you see me backpacking with the full Tyvek suit on :) Can't see me making many acquaintances :)
@iamsabian You know, I´ve used the full suits but they´re too much trouple and really they don´t breathe enough when I´m hiking...total sweat drench. They´re OK as extra warm pajamas, though, and probably add 10-15 degrees of cold weather usage to your bag.
@trailrunner733t I admit that they do look ridiculous...but no more ridiculous that rain kilts! I used a kilt once...made out of a lawn and leaf plastic bag and it was fine, but I got really wet ankles...especially walking through the overgrown paths on Isle Royale. Also, you're right: Tyvek's not 100% waterproof, but the chaps keep my legs warm and relatively dry...and I don't sweat in them. Most importantly, in Tyvek chaps I can pee freely!
There must be some way around the 'noise of the Tyvek. I don't use any but I hear washing it in the washing machine takes out the crackle. Any truth to that? I have noticed that sil-nylong is pretty noisy stuff, too. I use earplugs from Walmart when I sleep outside on a noisey night.
@rainbowhiker Right...Tyvek is noisy--you can wash it and that quiets it a bit but it also makes it a bit leaky. I just crush it in between my hands and that has the same effect.
FAKE? No no no it's just the more economical thing to purchase. A 3' by 100' roll of Tyvek was $44.99, the same stuff ( only this stuff was Lowes brand) cost $19.99 for the same dimensions. So my friend, even the "same" material without the Tyvek namebrand on it of coarse was less that half the price of the real deal stuff. I have made other things with Tyvek and storebrand materials and can't tell a diference yet.
I made a pair of pants made from Lowes brand Tyvek. My dad says they look stupid and not water resistant but I like them. The only down side is that they make a sound like your folding up a tarp and it gets VERY annoying after a while. Thank you, you are truely a Tyvek craftsman.
@CDoggsRandoms Wait a minute....do you mean that you used FAKE tyvek?? In any case, I will admit that even the real stuff is loud....that's why I stopped making tents and shelter tarps out of it.
Yeah, they served me well for years. Unfortunately, I misplaced them a couple of months ago and will be making a new pair soon. Maybe I'll try sewing them together this time instead of taping.....

@djbarryiii I heard if you wash the tyvek in the wash machine it will take away the cracker effect.

These are ridiculous. Tyvek isn't waterproof. You're better off with a silnylon rain kilt and a pair of light ripstop windbreaker pants.

If you watch construction projects, right after the framing is done the tyvek goes on and the left overs go to the dumpster.
I got a 6x 20 roll at an apt complex last year.

@MisterSoul99 Absolutely right!! Initially I got all of my Tyvek by dumpster diving...but eventually I bought a roll.

@CDoggsRandoms Well....if it's basically the same stuff, then I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tip!
