I had 3 heros in my youth. My Father, Bob Mathias (look him up), and Jim Ryun. 1st high-school student under 4:00. Bob Mathias; 17 years old, winning gold in 1948 Olympics decathlon, 1st person to win it twice, and 1st to win consecutive. Find the movie. They should do a remake. It's an honor to watch Jim speak. He seemed so untouchable, so quiet. This is nice, even after nearly 45 years.
I met Kip Keino at the Welsh Games Cardiff in 1968,he gave me his autograph, and his smile remains with me today.
I admired Jim Ryun, but he ran the wrong race in Mexico, you saw what hedid to Kip in England in 1967,he believed his own hype, should have stayed closer or led from the front. I 've seen plently of bad American losers,Ryun was not one of them.
Ryun was awesome. Would've been great to see him against Herb Elliot and Peter Snell a few years earlier. In a slow race, maybe Snell would've had too much speed.
Interesting commentary. I remember seeing this race so many years ago -- 3:33.1 -- breaking Elliot's mark. You don't see that everyday. I got Keino's autograph afterwards and he was so irked that he signed it "K. Keino."
Keino was known for being a sore loser. He would also make excuses a lot of time for losses. Ben Jipcho says Keino made up the story about gall bladder trouble in Mexico and about a death threat after he was beaten in a Commonwealth Games race. Keino was a great runner but a nutcase.
