I would walk in circles and scrape the ground with my foot, then when he pawed the ground too, reward him. Eventually he got the idea the circles and pawing the ground meant lying down. Take a look at the other clip of him lying down, also under Art of Horsemanship. We have also had someone lying on his back now, so guess I should film this soon.
this is nice.....and wow, two 30min sessions! that great! one of mine learned just because i said good girl when i saw her lay down naturally on her own, after that she just learned cues by mimicing me scratching the ground and turning circles, much the same, but another one i am training still hasnt learned and it has been months..... any hints?
I started by teaching him to paw the ground, which is what they naturally do prior to lying down, then made him circle, paw ground, circle, etc., until he went down. And yes, click and reward. To begin couldn't feed him whilst he was lying down, but now can stroke him all over. He's a big horse too....
yeah they know how to by themselves, yet people teach them i geus just so they can have more discipline. Like teaching a horse how to jump. most horses know how to but in this way they want them to jump for the riders pleasure.
I know that when I have had my horse lie down for me, then rubbed him about the head and shoulders, our relationship moved to the next level. The ability for a horse to escape a predator at any point is paramount in their mind, so lying down, on their side (longest delay in getting up and running away) is scary for them. When my horse lay down for me, and the whole experience was a pleasurable one that did not produce pain of any kind, our relationship grew very deeply.
Actually it's a good idea to have a horse learn to lay down on command for the just in case situations like U were out on a trail & had an accident & fall off the horse. U R a good mile out & hurt your leg or ankle but can't get back on. This aid is a great aid for the horse to help you when you ask him/her to lay down next to you then climb on & walk back home. I am not saying go by yourself with this. Always have the buddy system with other riders trail riding but this trick can save you.
Actually if this is done corectly nothing bad should happen. Know the facts before you post a bunch of "this is cruel" crap.

I'm training on this myself. We are only at the beginning stage. But with patience comes rewards^^ It makes me so happy when I see horses like yours.
Its a shame that some people dont see the difference in bad training and safe training, they just shout out abuse to us.

@jessicadiane97
Horses do this naturally all the time, the only time you don't want them rolling is when they are collicking....

when you taught him, did you just wait for him to lay down, click and reward him? what did you use for the cue to lie down?

im someone who knows nothing about horses. I just found this video through the normal random youtube path i always take lol.
Why are there so many videos of people teaching horses to lay down? Dont they know how to do so through natural instinct?
