  • Thank you

  • super great video. I love Jill Greenberg photography, ever since I found the Manipulator website in a Tanschien web art book.

You are a great teacher and do a fantastic job demonstrating this effect and process. Thanks!

  • Why do you need to change it to LAB mode for burn and dodge? Is it not the same if you use levels and paint over them?

  • Great work, thanks for this :)

  • thnxx

  • Great tutorial, thanks.

  • thank u. It was very useful to me. I didn't know how to do it and i loved that gwen stefani album cover!

  • @AgustinBlasco93 You're welcome, happy you like it:)

  • Great tutorial and great thing that you're sharing. I have a few questions that I hope you will and can answer. You go to lab colors in order to use the dodge/burn tool more effecient i pressume? Have you worked with dodge/burn or regular brush in an overlay (filled with neutral) in regular RGB - and if yes, why would you prefer LAB? I also see som miscoloring of her skin in the highlights, and I can't figure out if that's a product of you rushing through it, or something normal to dealw ith?

  • @adamsavant Thank you very much:)

The reason I use LAB, is because I simply think it gives a more natural result, compared to doing an overlay layer. That's just my personal preference. Try out both and just use the one you like best.

The discolouring is probably just because of me rushing through it. I always say that you should spend more time, to get a better result.

Hope that answers your questions. Thanks for watching:)

  • @TheHanekam and of course now I see we could have done this in Danish instead ^^

I'll try to see if this effect suits me more than the regular overlay in rgb. Thanks

  • @adamsavant Ja, man kan sagtens skrive til mig på dansk:)

    Good luck:)

  • very cool effect, thanx!

  • Gosh...thanks...i need to try this.....awesome tutorial

  • soooo much thanks

  • you rock

  • I like this technique of using the luminosity channel to dodge and burn as it leaves the colour information unchanged - unlike the other methods suggested below. But I wonder if working on a copy of the luminosity channel will allow more control to go back and edit the work done.

    Thanks for posting the vid.

  • Thank YOU.

  • @MRJOSEPH19791 you're very welcome, happy to help:-)

  • Thank u too much hony

    its very nice edit

  • Just great. Thanks. XLN` idea

  • Or you do the more professional way and get a dodge and burn adjustment layers and do that.

  • @sniperPlushy There is no adjustment layer for dodge and burn??

  • @TheHanekam Yes, the is. Just take two curves layers one light and one dark.

  • @sniperPlushy Well, then it's not dodge and burn adjustment layers, but curves adjustment layers:-) Curves and dodge/burn are not the same thing at all. Curves changes the whole picture, where as with the dodge and burn tool, you change specific areas on the picture, and get a much better result.

If you think it works for you, that's fine, I just don't recommend doing it that way:-)

  • @TheHanekam I don't think you know what I'm saying. Adjustment layers have masks which means your not working on the picture its self. Its a nondestructive way to edit pictures. Its called the dodge and burn technique because one curves adjustment is set to higher presets turning the picture lighter and you just change the mask to black and you cant see it any more. One is sent to lower presets making the burn layer and do the same with the mask that you did the the dodge layer.

  • @sniperPlushy Ok, I see what you mean now, and yes it's a shame that the dodge/burn tool can't be used non destructively.

Personally i still think dodge/burn gives you a better result on this particular effect, but that's probably a matter of taste.

    Thanks for your input:-)

  • @TheHanekam Dodge and burn can be used non destructively by making a layer and filling it with 50% gray and set it as a overlay and then use the dodge and burn tool over that layer. Something like that any.ways

  • @dovtail1 Cool, I will try that. Thank you very much for the tip:-)

  • I like so much this tut, basiclly this is the way to get the jill greenberg look, obiously this kind of proccess requires lots of patience and time to detail each light and shadow. Don't left behind the high pass filter and plugins like lucis arts. Thanks!!!

  • I really like this tutorial! The only thing I didn't like was how you over-exaggerated the shadows on her cheeks, I think it made her look older and overweight. Otherwise this is one of the best tutorials I've seen to imitate the Jill Greenberg look!

  • @thenavidsonrecord Thanks, glad you like it:-)

Well, this is done very quickly, just to give people the idea of how to do it.

I actually comment on the face in the video, saying that I'm not satisfied with it.

But again, it shows you how to do the effect, and as I stress in the video, you should play around with it, and spend much more time on it, to get your preferred effect.

  • so helpful! thanks a ton

  • really nice

  • I know this tutorial also. It`s cool work.

  • useful, hope to try it soon!
