I think that the ''Battleship Potemkin'' project is very underrated...If you listen all the soundtrack, you'll realize that PSB has wrote one of the most unique soundtrack of all the time!
The acting was very old-fashioned, but everything else about the Battleship Potemkin was incredibly modern and timeless. Hearing The Pet Shop Boys' score with the very modern editing and cinematography brought this 82 year old movie into, if not the 21st Century, at least the 1980s. I would have rather heard what Moby would have done with it. Still...very cool.
By the way I'm 49 and still enjoy PSB's music and I learned as a kid to appreciate classical music and opera sometimes via electronic or rock reworkings of the classics; Pictures of an Exhibition by Emerson Lake and Palmer or April by Deep Purple or the works of Walter/Wendy Carlos and Isao Tomita and maybe some Eric Carmer songs with Rachmaninoff melodies or Donna Summer with Chopin? That's actually Barry Manillow.
I saw this film with the original first orchestral soundtrack and then switch off the sound while playing it again but with the new Pet Shop Boys score from the i-pod and blew up my mind. It was like watching two different movies. Both very effective. Not every one likes PSB and is a good thing there are several versions with different soundtracks so anyone can choose the one they like most and don't get bother with the new approach. I agree with ideno 1985. appeal to new generations.
I enjoy this. I think the Pet Shop Boys did a good job bringing this movie back for a younger generation with the new soundtrack. It really plays up the drama and shows just how powerful a piece of propaganda The Battleship Potemkin was.
The highlight of the PSB soundtrack, with a fantastic song that could as well be about the situation in the world around 2004 (How come we went to war, referring to the Iraq war). Those people who don't like a modern take on an old movie, are just very narrow-minded.
I'm also a professional film viewer too, and yet I'm not nitpicking the smallest and most irrelevant things. This person has uploaded the new version of the film- isn't that too a sign of respect?
But apparently you and I disagree about what is small and irrelevant.
I am treating this upload as a self-contained unit and therefore feel pretty much every decision and every second of screen time counts.
I also won't give the user a "pass" due to assumptions about his/her technological abilities. Anyone can choose to put comments on the right, where text belongs.
The song is a nice one and the Odessa Steps sequence is always horrifying - but then I also love the motor oil in my car and I love a nice cold glass of water in the summertime, but would I mix THOSE together?
Actually, I'll agree with everyone who's been saying that movies should be appreciated in different contexts, and that at times it's positive to re-render such a masterpiece with modified elements such as the new soundtrack - in fact, Eisenstein suggested that the movie be re-scored every 20 years himself. That being said, however, I dislike PSB in general and this soundtrack specifically. The genius of the movie is not matched by the quality of the new soundtrack, which is poor imo.
Did you know that Eisenstein's father was a well known architect in Riga and that his son took some images for his films from the father's inspiring architecture features. DRS
Eisenstein actually wanted his film to be re scored every ten years according to an interview with the pet shop boys' neil tennant as the reason fo this
It's always sad when people can't appreciate modification to pre-existing art. Is it so hard to think of a film in multiple contexts? Eisenstein has made his masterpiece, and it is deservedly revered- the Pet Shop Boys have now given it a unique soundtrack, and not just for shits and giggles...it really adds something new to a film with as much history as this one.
Great comment; well-said. The film works great with the PSB music as a total. "After All" (this song) is a climax, most of the music is instrumental. I also don't understand the fuzz about title cards. The text is pasted on images that appear in the movie *before* this scene (and the music) stars. Those images aren't relevant for this YouTube clip at all.
I agree; for all I know the song could actually be good, but mixed with Potemkin it's like colorization: it doesn't actually make it more interesting, it just pollutes the genius of the original.
wow Colmgo, in your effort to be sarcastic, i think u have overlooked the sad fact, somebody has mixed the genius of Sergei Eisenstein, and mixed it with the Pet shop Boys :O, i'm going to cry now
Actually, MadHombre101, The Pet Shop boys song on this video isn't just a random song someone decided to mix with the "Odessa Stairs" scene in "Battleship Potemkin". The Pet Shop Boys Created an album solely based on the film, and they designed it to time perfectly from begining to end with the film. Basically as there own "Modern" Musical score. That is not an easy task, and it is not just a totally random mix.
They made it into a comedy film...The Odessa Steps massacre has never been more hilarious!!

This is the result of three great geniuses: Eisenstein and the Pet Shop Boys.

Eisenstein intended the soundtrack to be re-written every 20 years to seem modern to contemporary audiences.

Personally I think this is the least fitting score. It is not very hard hitting, in stark contrast to the film, sometimes it almost makes me laugh.

Most descriptions say that the woman in the pince nez is shot through her glasses, but to me it looks as if the Cossack is backhanding her.
What do you think?

I really, really wish you'd used a title card instead of pasting text over the images.
Very poor taste, indeed.
EyeLean5280 3 years ago
When you make a video, you can use a title card. What if they didn't have that kind of technology? Your comment is very poor taste.
xcherryflavoredx 3 years ago
Sorry, I don't accept that.
I wish the aesthetic of Einstein's film had been respected. I also believe that just because something can be done doesn't mean it ought to be done.
As a professional film reviewer, I can tell you that mine is a perfectly legitimate philosophical stance.
EyeLean5280 3 years ago
Make that Eisenstein.

I'll assume your credentials as a commentator are at least equal to mine and afford you the respect of a professional peer.
Even so, we are at an impasse. I understand your point and you, I assume understand mine. I doubt either of us is going to change our view.
So why don't we agree to disagree and leave this thread where it is?
EyeLean5280 3 years ago
Ok let's just agree to disagree then. Otherwise this will go nowhere.
