  • 3:54 steve jobs mayer

  • This solo is of the hook!

  • First of:

I don't know where you all get the idea of him saying he used autotune - yeah he has said in the ustream that he uses autotune, but that was fuckin ironically ment! I'm more than sure that he polish the vocals when mixing, that's common, but i've seen him live and i'm 99% positive that there's no autotune, and if there is it's not the autotune t-pain uses that's for sure...

  • yea he's admitted to using autotune. i know it's so widely used these days and don't really have any problem with it being used as long as it's not noticeable. I just thought that it stuck out like a sore thumb on 'every' at 3:59 and couldn't believe that it had been released like that (i know this is only a home demo though).

I think his singing has really come on a lot since his early days though

  • @huesofblues Wow, I've never had a problem with Mayer's use of autotune (because tbh, there's almost always a better live version than the album version for his songs), but yeah, at 3:59-4:01, on that "every", the autotune is really annoying. Oh well, not a big deal though.

He can sing ridiculously well live as we all know, so who cares if he uses autotune, we all know he doesn't need it, he's just a ridiculous perfectionist, lol.

Besides, to me, his guitar work is the real beauty.

  • @KovieMatt but remember this is a home demo so he wasnt able to record a production quality track it was meant to just record a "rough draft" for the song thats why some lyrics are muttered, he didnt have the lyrics down yet

  • @KovieMatt It's called falsetto. It's not autotune.

  • @KovieMatt

Haha that's not autotune, that's - as Jackb0b1 says - falsetto, and one that he just dosen't do very well here.

If you can't even hear the difference between technique and production tools...

  • @KovieMatt What autotune? There is clearly no autotune here. Just brilliance.

  • @KovieMatt LOL that's not auto-tune buddy.

Looks like you need to hit up some T-Pain videos for a crash course on auto-tune.

  • @sirfreakish Sigh... it's disappointing just how misinformed people are about auto-tune. I don't particularly like it, but seriously... Are you willfully ignorant or just lazy and/or dumb?

  • @KovieMatt You seem to be talking about yourself when you say "misinformed". Mayer is sliding up to a note just past his vocal bridge on that one and you mistake it as auto-tune.

So are you willfully ignorant or just lazy and/or dumb?

  • i like the feel of this one, but his singing is definitely weak. listen at 3:59 for some not so subtle autotune!

  • @huesofblues I'm not hearing a whole lot of autotuning. It is normal for artists to correct their pitch in the studio, which I'm sure he's done, but I'm not sure I'm picking up one what you mean. One way of telling if a musician is worth their salt is if their live singing sounds like their studio singing.

  • always love you no matter happens. \m/

  • You can rip the audio-mp3 of this vid at grabaudionow doht cohm.

  • you can just feel the soul!!!!!

  • Niiiice!!!

  • this is beautiful

  • he should start playing daughters like this..

  • @jingwah Check out his version of Daughters at the 2004 Grammy's, it's a bit similar I think.

  • @SaladTaste @jingwah

Yes, it is quite similar at the Grammy's but I think his best jazzy/bluesy version HAS to be with the Trio on the live album Try!

    Check it out.

The vocals are a lot smoother as well, and Pino really tears up the bass.

  • This is the kind of music JM needs to focus in on. He is the man when he gets that blues feel going, songs like this, come back to bed and especially covered in rain. His new album was too heavily produced and didn't have the same kind of blues and soul put into it.

  • @lightsout1997

yes you are right in a way, but johns new album is definatley something to show that he can come up with amazing hooks and melodies that are similar to room for sqaues and heavier things, the man has already proved so much in different genres.I thought the same thing but then I kept listening and fell in love with the album. It just makes me so excited to see what he'll do next

  • i feel some SRV tones in the solo...niceee

  • this is how the sound on the battle studies should have been, but sadly.. nooo, noo. i think the continuumish style is more interesting and musical, basicly just sound much better! the other will die in the crowd

  • @TheJuliusJT I agree

  • Live versions WAY better.

  • I had the people at my school in the arts department paint me one up with airbrushes and stuff. It came out really really good and then I had then finish it with a clear coat. They didnt even charge me because it was a "project", I was really happy.

  • Does anybody know what he's saying at 1:00

  • "I'm feeding my queen all of the lies that a princess has seen"

  • Wauw the production is alot like Room For Squares , i actually like this version better than the studio version he has on Heavier Things, but i still think the one from Where The Light Is beats em both :P

  • This sounds great. Just because there was more guitaring solo wise, I pick it as my favorite version, hah.

  • anybody know where i can get that strat?

    it's sooooo pretty :D

  • They stopped making it in the late 90's it was a Jimi Hendrix Monterey Pop Strat, I wish they still made it too! It's so nice looking.

  • Lots of people make replicas of them, some pretty damn good. Have a look on, ebay, they pop up from time to time. One of the fender custom shop ones would set you back quite a bit.

  • @TAP7006

They're several companies that replicate that particular model. I can't name them for you though. You should try and search for Jimi Hendrix' Monterey strat model; that's what it's actually based on.

I'm planning on painting one myself, don't know how that will come out though.

  • online, 14000 bucks

  • 14,000?

i know a place somewhat nearby where i live and they make the monetery pop strat out of dif fender custom shops and even reversed headstock/coils.

  • ahha they make them for about 2500 too

  • @TAP7006 its a monterey pop stratocaster. youll find out their price is pretty, too!

  • this song is amazing. i hope he wins an award for it

  • Dude, AWESOME. I think this for one shows John's incredible writing ability. He really wants to make the song perfect when he writes it. Secondly, I think if John had a say in his early albums it would have more of this feel. It is still laid back and has pop elements in it but it mixes in a little blues-rock element that makes it soulful. This is the real John Mayer genre. More "Continiumish" as markitymark90 said.

  • that was a revelation

  • this is so much more laid back and chill and smooth this is definetly my fav. version....even the singing is laid back hahaha...this cud definetly b a song u listen to when ur stoned hahaha

  • This is what daughters would sound like if it was on the continuum album.

  • Damn right it would. The drum reverb says it all.

  • sweet find man. good job

  • I love this song so much more when he uses his strat, this is kind of in between the acoustic version and his trio version, although his trio version is still like over the top awesome.

  • he's become a much better singer now than he was back when this was recorded.

  • somehow it sounds better than the album version

  • do you have the mp3? the sound quality seems really good!

  • solo kick ass

  • i want one of those jimi monterey pop guitars

  • i want one of those dumble steel string singers

  • Either get big enough and good enough that he wants to build one for you or keep checking ebay...

  • Where's the video?

  • Did he make a video of the Home Demo?

  • man, where are people finding all these demos of his

  • this was included on the single release of dughters. hope that helps.

  • This one is on Itunes actually.

  • This is really cool, but what's he saying right before the chorus? He's kinda mumbling something about a queen...does anyone have the lyrics to this version?

Thanks for posting this man, it's beautiful! One of my all-time favorite songs. :)

  • I think he's saying "and I'm reading my queen all of the lies that the princess has made." Yea this is a really sweet version.

  • Oh ok, thanks. I wish I could see the lyrics for this one, I'd love to know more about what he was trying to say there.
