2005 50hp Tohatsu Side console stessco 455, on weighbridge boat 600kg with motor, even with full load for offshore runs. Constant 60-70kms hr+ why dont know freeak motor maybe, fuel economy awesome, would swap me misses for a 60hp Tohatsu, maximum hp is 60, been told by mates that my motor is too small, one drive their wanting to buy it. Each to our own on what we like but! Lifesavers in Australia use them they drown them flip them, 2thumbs up for Tohatsu!
@ Ranger fishing like I wrote my Etec destroys the pro xs not talking about this test with me being a certified Etec marine engineer and know their capabilities and have been to the tests and obviously your reading is not upto much as I put my etec against my pals pro xs 2 STROKE and he has never beaten mine and my god how he has tried and guess what he now owns an etec !!! once again thats why the navy seals now use them!!!
Pro xs Laughable, My best boating buddy has the XS and same boat as me and running 10hp more than me! I actually weigh 2 stone more than he does last year we had a head to head and my E-tech won the 1 mile sprint by 5 yards and he wanted another try, i gave him a head start and he was leading for only a few seconds and i SMOKED him once again by 3 yards so know what you are on about why do you think EVINRUDE now own the Military Navy Seal contract so take your ugly blue bands and do one!!! lol

@dexter2433 research? I've been in the Outboard Business for over 25 years now. Maybe one day you’ll figure out that H.P. Sales, and Torque Drives. All outboards are rated at the prop, but there are many variables that you know nothing about and not whether the engine has a Cam, T.C. and such. It's all about how the engine is setup, Fuel/Air received, Exhaust Escape, Resonance, Torque Curve, and Prop Design. Mercury lost one of their best engineers to OMC. An E-Tech is not your average machine!
Agree with "redneck...". Just put a new 225 SHO 4/Stroke on my bayboat after dealing with issue after issue after issue with my very rude E-Tec. It was a very fast motor, great hole shot and all, but when it's in the shop every other week for something, it's no use to me. My neighbors Yamaha was only marginally slower, but his "older" Yamaha was bullet proof...Sorry Mr. Rude...Stay home!

@XboxPhantom Welcome to the club. We all have reasons to select what sutes us best. In my case it was E-Tec. And I never regret it. There where other choices, but E-Tec was the best solution.
The problem with these tests is that they are comparing a 2 stroke to 4 strokes. 4 strokes are duds right out of the box. You will never see any company compare 2 strokes to 2 strokes because you would be comparing apples to apples. So ya, a 2 stroke will always in most cases be faster then 4 stokes as they just demonstrated
theres one problem with what someone said, if you put a mercury pro xs against any of those motors the pro xs would smoke them, but the problem is that some said the optimax cant keep up with the evinrude in the video, but that wasnt an optimax, that was a mercury verado which is obviously going to lose agianst a two so maybe evinrude should compare there motors to ther 2 strokes like the pro xs but we all know they wont cause evinrude cant compete with mercury 2 strokes.

@repsolka the fuel consumption is fine. When you run any boat at 70 mph you get 1mph per gallon. It does drink the oil but tends to sip the gas if your not always at WOT.

Yamaha make the most reliable outboards but Evinrude outboards are undoubtedly the most powerful due to them being 2 stroke instead of 4 stroke. Personally I use an old 2 stroke yamaha - lots of power but it drinks the fuel.
So what? This is on a stupid bass boat! Put all these motors on an offshore fishing boat and see what lasts longer. Evinrude won't make it out the inlet. Ask an ska angler, they will tell you yami and merc are the best.

This test is rubbish. I won an Etec and am happy with it. However 3 outboards of the same HP output powering boats of equal weight are going to be very close together when crossing the line. There will be some varience, but nothing like whats displayed in this video. Evinrude are damaging their brand by producing such videos, the general public aren't stupid. All it does is question Evinrudes integrity as a company.
@sheebaridgeback If they were all 4 strokes they would be very close together but when one of them is a 2-stroke and therefore has far more torque as it fires every 2 strokes instead of every 4 it will win easily. If you used an old yamaha 2 stroke in good condition and raced it against a newer 4 stroke yamaha, the 2 stroke would win for the same reason. The only reason most companies decided to use 4 strokes is because they are far quieter and economical than most 2 strokes.
Evinrude licensed Aprilia's (Piaggio owned) Di-Tech direct fuel injection 2 stroke engine technology to produce their E-TEC engines. These engines deliver oil through a system of capilaries directly to where it is needed. The 2T oil is never mixed with the fuel before it is injected into the combustion chamber. There is a reed valve (on the Di-Tech engines, I assume on the the E-TEC as well) that only brings in a fresh air charge with no fuel. These engines are very clean and powerful.

I dont really care about going fast...Whats the point? I would rather have a reliabe motor with not much issues to them. From most of the reviews I read the Yamahas are more reliable. The evinrude tends to break more often. Havent heard much on Mercs. its probably because they dont breakdown as much as Evinrude/Johnsons aka Lemonrudes.
your dead right .we spoke to quite afew of these waterski companys in spain .they all had yams having previosly owning mercs they all said yams were far more reliable.they know more than anyone -they use them everyday -not a few times aseason

Hate to correct anyone misinformed but I blew my Vmax yama doing 73mph in my ranger. I went to an Etec 250 Im now running 81mph confirmed on GPS. Im running same weight and fuel and im not paid by Evinrude I actually paid them $20,000

I've made many a Mercury Evinrude of the same vintage with comparable set ups both hp and size of boat etc. Look SICK! with a Chrysler. A few years ago a guy I know had a 65hp Merc on a 16 foot cheetah . Top speed 32 mph on a GPS Hole shot at least 200 feet. Motor ran perfect compression over 150 on all three. Put 70 hp chrysler on same boat Hole shot 30 feet top end 48 mph on a GPS

i saw a race between the new 30hp etec evinrude and a tohatsu (mercury) 30hp on the same boat (winrace mk8), the tohatsu was faster in plane and in topspeed !! and the tohatsu is cheaper :D

Optimax would kick the e-techs ass, thats why its not included in the race. Optimax were the first in direct injection and now e-tech is only catching up. E-techs are still harder on gas and spark plugs then optimax's. Put a optimax against an e-tech and you will see what happens.

I have a 2006 23 mako with a 225 etec. My fuel burn at 32 mph is 8.1 gph. And i can troll for 6 hrs on 1 gallon of gas. My top speed is 50mph. And i have owned yamaha and mercury. I love my Etec!!

I have a ranger z20 with a 225 ho evinrude etec and it passes people with the new mercs easily. I dont think that they would allow that to air on t.v. if it was rigged srry.... You cant false advertise.... I do however enjoy older built up racing mercs.... You cant do much to the new etec.....
it kinda was rigged there should have been an optimax on that boat and even tho i am a mercury lover there should have been a 2 stroke yamaha on the other boat

Well haha funny poptimax I have twin 225 optimaxes and both run beautifully but the etec and Vmax are 2 strokes and are much lighter than any fourstroke from any company. The etec H.O. and the Yamaha Vmax were both designed for bass boats. The prime application for a verado is on a large offshore boat in twin to quad applications not bass boats. Mercury makes the optimax sport xs which is designed specifically for bass boats. Which proves that this is an unfair test.
dude the super charger dont do much i got twin merc 250 verado on my 32 express proline, it came with twin suziki 250s it did bout the same speed mayb 2 knots slower
look at the boat with the mercury and the e-tec. The e-tec is already gone and the verado has barely hit the throttle. In my opinion I think that this was rigged.
Evinrude etec H.O will own any other outboard with the same amount of horsepower, but not like in this video. this is just advertising

@repsolka the fuel consumption is fine. When you run any boat at 70 mph you get 1mph per gallon. It does drink the oil but tends to sip the gas if your not always at WOT.

Yamaha make the most reliable outboards but Evinrude outboards are undoubtedly the most powerful due to them being 2 stroke instead of 4 stroke. Personally I use an old 2 stroke yamaha - lots of power but it drinks the fuel.

This test is rubbish. I won an Etec and am happy with it. However 3 outboards of the same HP output powering boats of equal weight are going to be very close together when crossing the line. There will be some varience, but nothing like whats displayed in this video. Evinrude are damaging their brand by producing such videos, the general public aren't stupid. All it does is question Evinrudes integrity as a company.

@sheebaridgeback If they were all 4 strokes they would be very close together but when one of them is a 2-stroke and therefore has far more torque as it fires every 2 strokes instead of every 4 it will win easily. If you used an old yamaha 2 stroke in good condition and raced it against a newer 4 stroke yamaha, the 2 stroke would win for the same reason. The only reason most companies decided to use 4 strokes is because they are far quieter and economical than most 2 strokes.

Evinrude licensed Aprilia's (Piaggio owned) Di-Tech direct fuel injection 2 stroke engine technology to produce their E-TEC engines. These engines deliver oil through a system of capilaries directly to where it is needed. The 2T oil is never mixed with the fuel before it is injected into the combustion chamber. There is a reed valve (on the Di-Tech engines, I assume on the the E-TEC as well) that only brings in a fresh air charge with no fuel. These engines are very clean and powerful.

I dont really care about going fast...Whats the point? I would rather have a reliabe motor with not much issues to them. From most of the reviews I read the Yamahas are more reliable. The evinrude tends to break more often. Havent heard much on Mercs. its probably because they dont breakdown as much as Evinrude/Johnsons aka Lemonrudes.

pretty much yes. e tec fires every revilution not every 2 or 4 resulting in more power. i think it ends up being more gas, oil and maintence. so there total hype no real proformance.

I get such a laugh out of you guys fighting over Evinrude Mercury Yamaha?? What about Chrysler? I've made many a Mercury Evinrude of the same vintage with comparable set ups both hp and size of boat etc. Look SICK! with a Chrysler. A few years ago a guy I know had a 65hp Merc on a 16 foot cheetah . Top speed 32 mph on a GPS Hole shot at least 200 feet. Motor ran perfect compression over 150 on all three. Put 70 hp chrysler on same boat Hole shot 30 feet top end 48 mph on a GPS

I have two problems with this video...(there are probably many more)
1. Evinrude is doing the test
2. The Merc isn't an optimax.
Here's a little reasoning...I give credit to Evinrude for going back to the two stroke, whoever thought of that was one smart cookie...but when they test thier e-tec against a mercury four-stroke...they remove all credibility anyone ever gave em. Anyone knows that you can't beat the raw power of a 2-stroke...it's like comparing a corvette to a prius...

Wow...are you people really that jealous? I do bass tourneys. Lots of them, I can call it fair, for I have a 115 e-tec on an 07 178 vs ranger. I pass guys in tritons, with 200 hp and over mercs, and I BLOW past yamahas no matter what horsepower. The only motor that ever passed me was a hydrotec yammie, but that one was puttin out 338 hps.

i saw a race between the new 30hp etec evinrude and a tohatsu (mercury) 30hp on the same boat (winrace mk8), the tohatsu was faster in plane and in topspeed !! and the tohatsu is cheaper :D

BWB also ran a similar test of 225 DFI 2-strokes, same competitors and rules (see"The Main Event", also by John Tiger, jr). Their results:
Top speed:
E-TEC: 84.2 mph (86.7 mph with a new production design gearcase)
Optimax: 90.0 mph
HPDI: 84.9 mph
Best Fuel Economy:
E-TEC: 5.0 mpg (5.7 mpg with a new production design gearcase)
Optimax: 6.2 mpg
HPDI: 5.8 mpg
All DFI's are pretty close with each other.

I have a 2006 23 mako with a 225 etec. My fuel burn at 32 mph is 8.1 gph. And i can troll for 6 hrs on 1 gallon of gas. My top speed is 50mph. And i have owned yamaha and mercury. I love my Etec!!

I have a ranger z20 with a 225 ho evinrude etec and it passes people with the new mercs easily. I dont think that they would allow that to air on t.v. if it was rigged srry.... You cant false advertise.... I do however enjoy older built up racing mercs.... You cant do much to the new etec.....

Well haha funny poptimax I have twin 225 optimaxes and both run beautifully but the etec and Vmax are 2 strokes and are much lighter than any fourstroke from any company. The etec H.O. and the Yamaha Vmax were both designed for bass boats. The prime application for a verado is on a large offshore boat in twin to quad applications not bass boats. Mercury makes the optimax sport xs which is designed specifically for bass boats. Which proves that this is an unfair test.
