  • The fact that people debate the musical quality within this song proves it has musical content worth debating. Spock's Beard FTW.

  • what the f*** is so important, if it is prog or not??? it is just amazing!!!

  • This song is not progressive, but the album is.

  • What's progressive, really? Is a metal guitar riff and solo slapped on top of an odd drum signature immediately progressive? Shouldn't progressive be unexpected, isn't the journey prog takes you on more important than method or form? This song is the apex of one of the most progressive albums out there.

  • I love it and it gives me the shivers everytime!

  • Me and 12 other Prog Metal fans think this is not Prog!

  • @21Kaiser21 Lol, true, but the other songs on the album are. This is just one of those "take it easy" transition songs. Kinda like Dream Theater's "Walk Beside You" on the album Octavarium.

  • @21Kaiser21 LOL get your sorry ass out of here

  • @21Kaiser21 Prog is a wider gender than Prog Metal. And all in all, music goes beyond genres. If you don't like this song, why bother listening to it and commenting it in the first place?

  • @21Kaiser21 Dream Theater's "The Answer Lies Within" and "Wither" are other good examples. Also, the way the vocals are put together isn't something you hear all the time. Just stuff to think about.

  • @21Kaiser21 give a listen to their other songs mate, i suggest 'second overture/4th of july' or 'devils got my throat', this song is beautiful and shows how diverse the band can be. a band is allowed to step out of their comfort zone every now and then!

  • That's a perfect song!

  • ...and my soul has been kissed, just because you exist.

  • @ViperRob42 Sends shivers down my spine everytime :)

  • this/solitary shell/solsbury hill are all the same thing lol.

  • @AwesomeUsername12322 Lol I didn't know I'd get such a vigorous response to that joke... To clarify, I was just kidding... Opeth is my all-time favorite band, and I very much appreciate their lighter stuff (Damnation is a fucking sweet album, BTW.) Actually I just saw them live on their new Heritage USA tour, and they fucking rocked the house so hard... They had many light songs, and no growling the whole show, but they were the most impressive musicians I've ever seen live. Sorry if I offended

  • @JEA21B Haha I was just kidding, referencing this clip, funny movie. Harkening back to the days when it was okay to be closed minded, ahh...... Search for "The Stoned Age BOC" on youtube.

  • i hate the term progressive rock, theres nothing progressive about it. Being a music student its sad to think of strumming 3 chords as being music, this is just rock everything else is below it, a joke, a game. Its only the "progressive" bands that really put effort into their work

  • @porchmonkey401k I strongly agree with your last sentence.

  • @M3FANBOY27 then you are not a music student

  • @porchmonkey401k You know this is a ballad, right? Musicwise, you can't expect much from ballads. By the way, judging a band by how much they actually prove that their genre label is correct is the worst form of judgement I've ever seen.

  • @porchmonkey401k I'm not a music student, but I've been playing music my whole life. I agree with you, the only bands that actually tries to be innovative and create new experiences for the listener are the "progressive" bands, but they also require people who listen. Most people just want noise in the background.

  • Don't you guys know that all rock bands have a pussy song? The other songs are real song's but the pussy song they put out to test which ones of their fans are pussies. Just like BOC's Don't Fear the Reaper. And also the first track on Opeth's Watershed. Thumbs down if you recognized this as a pussy song.

  • @franciswusher Hey, theres nothing wrong with a little "don't fear the reaper" friend.

  • @franciswusher Why is Coil, the first song on Watershed, a pussy song?

  • This is a really great song....love how it continues to build as it progresses. Definetly a catchy tune that will leave you singing this song days on end. Love the environment this song creates.

  • @FreshandMinty, i do agree that testimony 2 is awesome and snow is great. i got them both on my ipod, but dont be talkin shit about Dream Theater! They're single handedly one of the most talented bands out there. plus their metal actually sounds good! I live and breathe dream theater

  • cheesy.

  • This song sounds like a sequel to "Walking On The Wind." The Chorus is pretty identical between the two!

  • Get Neal's new Testimony 2 cd, it's fabulous. And i agree 'Snow' was an incredible cd too. Good to see Mike enjoying himself away from that noise called Dream Theater.

  • I like it, looking forward to seeing them at the High Voltage festival in july...

  • Crowded House springs to mind with this song.

    Message to my girl.

  • aggressively bland.

  • @hansblume That's an oxymoron, lol.

  • First heard about this group off of Portnoy's "In Constant Motion" DVD. Not bad (:

  • @bozzioisgod44 That's how I find out about all these bands. Portnoy seems to have his hands in every band. First song I heard of Neal Morse was "Heaven in my Heart." Favorite song though is "We all Need some light"

  • I listen to death metal.

    I listen to progressive music.

    I listen to R&B

For me, I honestly don't need anything else.

  • @MrVictiln you needc a little less death metal and a little more jazz and funk and soul.. Marcus Miller, Sly and the Family stone, The Supremes, and of course Miles Davis, John Coltrane

  • @bassbreaker I love Sly & The Family Stone, and The Supremes.

I haven't heard of the others.

I really enjoy death metal, and Black Metal.

I never need less of it.

The riffs are great, and catchy.

  • I just want to live

In the place that you have to give

I'll let the heat beat me down

    Until the water comes down...

  • @jimmaya i don't get how any of this is supposed to be bad. yes and gentle giant rule.

  • @metalfun111 I love prog, it's my favourite genre, but I never got into Gentle Giant or King Crimson, try as I might.

  • @AK2927 Well I never got into Yes( booooring...) and Dream Theater. "Red" from King Crimson is very good I think, and Gentle Giant just rules;)

  • @AK2927 Genesis? Rush? Transatlantic? Those are the only ones I can think of right at this moment.

  • dedicated this to my lady, happy one year babe! :)

  • @jimmaya. Perhaps prog is not about playing 42323 notes per second during 23 minutes. it's a much wider genre than most people think. And one of it's main characteristics is inlcuding pieces from many genres

  • @martyfriedman86 yeah I guess. Kinda overreacted with my reaction. I now what you when it's a much wider genre. But still... Not impressed, oh well.. Can't agree with everybody

  • dude this is spock's beard? I expected prog

  • @mioluce This is like genesis, with a pop voice and some calm songs.

  • @mioluce dude, please listen to the whole album.........

  • @mioluce - They are prog. Check out Revelation for instance...

  • @mioluce From what I know of them, I don't think this is typical. Prog bands seem to feel the need to throw in a commercial "straight" song every now and then (Collins usually used to do one on each Gabriel-era Genesis album - then they became ALL straight songs). It's not bad, but it's not prog - it's MOR.

  • neal morse kicks so much ass, its not even funny

  • change the sails to suit the wind you said, sort of x for monica

  • yeah morse has more emotion but nick is good to i seen them live with nick on vocals nick is a better showman he was headbanging during surfing down the avalanche.

  • does he sound like lennon/glen tipton or what?

  • One of the greatest inspirational songs ever!

  • So this is christmas.....

  • It's like Phil Collins combined with the singer of Oasis then covered itself in gold and took the appearence of Neal Morse...

  • Nick is a better singer

but they both are great drummers

    I saw neal at transatlantic

    and nick with spocks

    they are great

  • Very good 80's sound

  • Comment removed

  • This reminds me of Toad the Wet Sprocket.

  • Excellent. Never heard these guys before.

  • @Microsloth CHECK OUT PORCUPINE TREE..!! Thats some good stuff..

  • cool song! my vids are cool too!

  • Not too prog sounding, though it's a great song nonetheless. I want more.

    Prog ftw!

  • I truly think this is one of the best S.B. songs, very inspiring, very positive, true artists at work! Euphia at it's finest.

  • This is my favourite song of that album. And the second version fills me even more with positive energy.

  • @mostlyanthony

Where can I find the second version? When I look on Youtube I seem to find either this, live ones or an American tv series.... I'd like to hear another studio version of this if possible =)

  • @khakimidget you can find the whole "Snow"-album on Youtube. The second version of Wind at my back is combined with "Made alive again"

  • @mostlyanthony Cool, thanks! I'll look that up =)

  • what a great band, i dont know why they are not more well know. great song and video thanx for postin

  • it´s SB´s "IT" from genesis

  • veers off into geysing

  • Fantastic lyrics

  • Doesn't really sound like prog very much

  • Russscience I agree that this track doesn't sound very prog when heard in isolation. But you need to hear it in the context of a double CD concept album. Think of IT, the final track on Lamb Lies Down On Broadway..... that isn't very prog on its own

  • listen to any other song theyre very progressive

  • I would say The Light is a nice first cd to try by Spocks Beard. Snow is good, I would say start from the early days :)

  • instant classic !!!!

  • I'm not sure what Spocks beard album to start off with, I heard quite a few songs and I wanan get an album, should I start off with snow?

  • Definately.. You will eventually get so hooked that you can't listen to other Spock's Beard albums for a while, just because Snow is so great

  • awesome i seen them live in glasgow they are great guys should be more succesful

  • No Rudicci you are wrong......These two albums Six degrees of inner turbulence and snow came out the same year. 2002.Solitary Shell inspiration came from Peter Gabriel's "Solsburry Hill"

  • now i know where "solitary shell" inspirations comes :D Great great great song!!

  • one of the greatest songs!!!i love spocks!!especially with neal...prog rock never got the credit it deserved!

  • prog rock got a lot of credit, just not as many charted hits because of the length of prog rock songs. pop hits tend to be around 3 minutes long whereas prog rock songs usually start around 5.

  • This is the first song I've heard by Spock's Beard. They are reminding me of Kayak. I expected something a little more proggy. I'll try one of their older albums after this one.

  • They are VERY proggy. I mean, listen to this song, and know that they also have songs that sound like straight out metal, and then they have Gentle-Giant-ish stuff.

  • I like that there is an audience out here which can speak in complete sentences!

    Life long musician/ froggman

  • I love this song! It makes me think about my grammar teacher.. He introduced to my class this group, specially this song! The funny thing is that he looks grumpy and bad but he's very nice and he acts like a child sometimes! He also plays the guitar! =)

  • You're so lucky to have a teacher who likes Spock's Beard.

  • Love the album Snow...spocs beard are probably my second favorite band of all time. soooooo disapointing this genre of music dosent get the attension it deserves.

  • hmm.

my ex introduced me to this band. & i'm glad he did, because i like it:)

but it reminds me of him, sadly.

  • Wow, this is a great song.

  • thanks for the music and

thanks for all the time I heard this music.

    thanks for SB

  • I've always been a huge Dream Theater fan and once had the pleasure of hearing SB with them. The band is quite unique and rather advanced in both writing and arranging. Their techniques are all very proficient as well. I think their use of dynamics and texture define their sound and the lyrics are well thought out and delivered. Very talented band. As the voice, keys, sax, and primary writer for Straightaway, I relate to the progressive genre, if you care to label it. It's just damn good music!!

  • PORCUPINE TREE

    MARILLION

    PENDRAGON

    IQ

check em all out if you are pining for

  • also DJAM KARET

  • Don't forget THE FLOWER KINGS and TRANSATLANTIC!!!

  • I'm still undecided on whether I prefer this version or the one that closes "Snow". It's certainly the best Christian worship songs Christians aren't aware of.

  • Yeah, I'm a Christian, and I wish that we had this standard of worship songs at our church - it would be so refreshing to be able to praise God and enjoy the music!

  • I always thought this was a Snow worship song, but I see very easily how it can be a Christian worship song (I'm a Christian by the way). But a Christian worship song doesn't really fit well with the Snow storyline.

It's interesting, though. I guess it depends on when exactly Morse became a Christian during the making of this album.

  • From what I've been able to make of the album, Snow is a supposed saviour, who falls from grace himself but eventually finds redemption through love. Whether this love is God's or his companions or his own is up to the listener because the end of the album is kind of vague. But it's completely open to a Christian interpretation.

  • Wow, I can totally feel the song!

  • Neal Morse is a way better vocalist than Nick. There seems to be more emotion in Morse's voice. Nick's a good singer, but Morse does something with his voice and his music that hits a certain something.

  • @Glasscider Maybe because Nick is the drummer too, no ? :)

  • Nick on the vocals is so much better! The last 3 albums of Spock's Beard are the best!

  • Hopefully one day Neal will perform the complete "Snow"-album

  • This period (if i am not wrong) in fact is matching with the spiritual chrisis of Neal Morse, Lead vocalist and former of the band, that suddenly turned to christian rock, leaving band...

I don't find his voice so bad, even perhaps this is not his best condition... and if perhaps this is not the most progressive piece, Spock's beard is a great progressive band to me...

    =^.^=

i like very much in the mouth of madness and gibberish, but also others... gibberish is very difficult to play!

  • I know this is a response to a two-month-old post, but it's not as if Spock's Beard had never had acoustic songs like this before. It's subjective, but Neal Morse's voice is fine... it's a distinguishing feature of SB's early musics. This song seems to fite the "Snow" story well. And what is "progressive" anyway? Can't an uplifting song like this be part of a "progressive" opus and work?

  • see the play with neal in pittsburg, pa

  • And I agree, it's the best slow song I've heard along with the newer Spock's Beard's "There was a Time"

  • This group's a new find for me - I think that they're fantastic!

  • They're very good man!

  • So it seems! I love prog so much - and this is where it's at.

  • Neal has so much emotion in his voice. I really love his voice. btw, is there anything he can't do? he can play drums, guitar, keyboard and he sings. He is one of greatest musicians I've ever heard of.

  • You're mum has better taste in music than you ever will.

  • @Jaemseh Your, not you're, which is a conjugation you are.

  • @Jaemseh wow what a diss!! love it!

  • @Jaemseh ...and your mum can probably spell better than you...it's YOUR mum, not "You're", which is a conjugation of "you are".

  • @Jaemseh Learn to spell, stupid-it's YOUR, not YOU'RE.

  • @gh9448 If he didn't learn that at school like the rest of us, he never will

  • Such a wonderful song!

  • In a time where I often give up on current music, this gives me hope that there is still an audience for quality. This always makes me feel good!

  • This band takes me back to my flower days. They are profound.

  • Such wonderfull stuff!

  • I think Nick is an AMAZING singer, maybe better than Neal, but man, Neal is like the soul for SB, he's needed

  • I miss Neal too. And agreed, Nick sings very well, but Neal just owns the sound of Beard. His solo stuff is great though

  • i think neal morse should get back together with spocks beard and go on tour playing snow

  • If that happened, I would travel anywhere in the world to see that show. Maybe we should start a petition.

  • I'd sign it ;)

  • I'll sign it

  • Beautiful words, very meaningful. Another special favourite.

  • you give what i lack...exceptional..words and instrumental compose...just heavenly

  • Beautiful words and the singing is just as good ^^

  • Spock's Beard introduced me to the wonders of progressive rock, and I'll always love it for that. Wonderful band, wonderful song.

  • you must hear Dream Theater.

Space Dye Vest The spirit carries on

  • can't explain with words how much I love this song...Spock Beard's is the just the BEST band ever, and Neal Morse is a genius (even if he's now a fanatic...)

  • What a beautiful song...

  • goooooood i love this song - reuben, aged 6!

  • Love this song, but the Born Again/Wind At My Back version on disk 2 is even better yet.

  • I'm not sure about this band yet, got to hear more.

  • I don't suppose anyone can direct me to some good studio stuff by this band, and Neal Morse's solo work?

(He's got such a good voice, check him out on Ayreon's The First Man on earth, which I'm going to upload soon.)

  • Spock's Beard - "Beware of Darkness" is a good album to start with I think.

    Neal's solo - "One" - Simply amazing.

  • Thanks

  • Snow is by far the best album they did. Nothing the beard or Morse does now gets even close to it. To bad he quit, they could have been huge..

  • Neal Morse is so talented. Just wish this generation appreciated more music of this kind. Spocks Beard has done so well since he left, but hes found God so its all cool.

  • What do you mean by "this generation"? I guess you could be referring to the hip-hop/rap/R N B fans that dominate mainstream music these days.

  • I'm a big R&B- and Hip-Hop-Fan but I also like that kind of music...great song!!!

  • WOW! Great music!

  • I love this song :) plus Carie from the same cd is such a lovely song :)

  • Thanks for this! I was looking for my copy of Snow, I couldn't find it and was getting kind of desperate to hear this song!

    Beautiful indeed!

  • That's incredible friend - I lost mine too !! 2 discs as I remember too :(
