I was wondering, regarding the comlexity of some of your songs, they must be written down? Would it be possible for me to get hold of some of the scores for the drum parts?
I really don´t know, what was the thing they have grown on, but it seems to me that It could be a mix of geniality with madness. One of the best thing I ve ever heard, have already purchased this album. Its a pitty that is unable to find the first two- ... proposal for reedition?
I remember seeing Shining for the first time when they toured with Enslaved and they were fucking awesome!!! Can't wait to see them next week supporting Devi, and to be honest I wasn't gonna go see Devi until Shining were confirmed as support!!!
@MaDTytuS Thanks so much! Glad you like it! Actually, I do not think those two first albums are available anymore. Not even as digital files. Sorry about that.
Dear Shining, I can see there is a reason you've been making more than a few end of the year top ten lists for this! This is some of the most original music I've heard in a long time, and utterly amazing. And everything before this was awesome, too! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a hard copy anywhere of Where the Ragged People Go
I saw you guys live in Wacken yesterday and i gotta say - you probably were the band who flashed me the most on the festival. I really like your stye of music, i always thought about making some metal/funk/prog/jazz crossover and YOU guys turned it out fuckin good...
Yes! Here in Helsinki once again, see you guys there. Oh and those of you who don't where the gig is, it's in DOM (Fredrikinkatu 42, it's "behind" Kamppi).
@FlipmindMusic Yes, that is correct. Our two first albums Where the Ragged People Go and Sweet Shanghai Devil are probably not easy to find now, but there are some samples from this era at the Myspace url /shiningjazz.
@SHININGofficial very interesting samples. Is there any way to get ahold of those albums digitally? I don't think they were ever released internationally, but i'd really like to track your whole development as a band, it's incredibly interesting.
Does anyone know where to get guitar tabs for this band. doesn't have to be a certain song, but i'd like to play some of the riffs this band plays. They're fucking awesome. My friend today during Language Arts class should me this band and i can't stop listening to them. So please msg me a site or tabs. thanx.
This was my album of the year by far, nothing gave me more pleasure than to debate this gem with some friends of mine who work at some jazz stores in Portugal, I mean, it's not everyday you are raped by a mix of naked city/painkiller/ brutal truth/syl/etc... Which reminds me: WHEN ARE YOU PLAYING IN PORTUGAL?
Actually knew this great band already, but respect to Devy for helping to introduce a bunch of people to them. Blackjazz was easily one of the best albums of 2010.
@MassExtinctionEvent I fully agree with you sir, on both parts. Blackjazz was my 4th favorite album of '10, if I remember my list correctly. I also heard a bootleg of the Armageddon Concerto....easily the greatest live performance I've ever heard. I really wish Shining and Enslaved would release a live cd or dvd for that, because it was incredible.
I hope to see you in Greece soon. You have a lot of supporters here. You were supposed to play in August of 2009 in Thessaloniki but it was cancelled.:( Btw the new album kick ass as all the others! Hails from Greece (Thessaloniki) \m.
@AirspaceFalling Funny, I was just listening to him. It was a very roundabout path: Devin Townsend begat the desire to listen to Diablo Swing Orchestra, who begat the desire to find more jazz or swing-style metal bands, which brought me to this band.
@maybe7347 I think its because some places in Europe write B as H because a lower case b used to look somewhat like a h when hand written down. It's just a wierd mistake that ended up becoming part of the theory in some cases. I know some Swedish people who write it like that.
@Doginater During live concerts we use Clavia Nord synths; one for rhodes sounds into an amp, and one for stereo synth sounds DI to FOH. On the album audio, which you hear in this video, the synth is mainly an Oberheim Matrix 1000, default patch number 009 or 019 (don't remember which). This was distorted through a Zvex Octane 3, and blended with the dry signal. In the choruses some of the guitars sound very synthy also. They have been played through Zvex Machine/FF or a BitMangler.
What I don't get is (maybe I'm just not the person this band intends to please) how I absolutely love this song and Fisheye, but when it comes to Omen, I just think it's noise?
honestly when i heard black metal and jazz being mixed togetherin a reveiw iwas like "hah thats impossible" but no it actually works carry on making music very interestin and original

@SHININGofficial its actually Cable factory(well... in name only these days) and I am so stoked that you guys are playing sounds awesome. See u there, I already have my ticket.

@Creepingflame its comming along pretty nice. still hard to figure out some parts by ear.. alot of stuff going on at some parts haha. but i can play Madness, fisheye, exit sun, parts of healter skelter, in the kingdom of kitch you will be a monster and Asa Nisi Masa! don't have a good camera, so its gonna be hard for me to put it on youtube :/
i did a google search trying find some info on the norwegian black metal band w/ the same name. luckily, i found this band instead. black jazz is an awesome album
@GANGSTAsizeZAK Hi! On the main refrain riffs the following sounds were used: Mostly Zvex Fuzz Factory and Devi Ever Bit Mangler on the DI-ed SG humbucker guitar, along with a more standard overdrive pedal and a gate on the single coil Tele guitar in amp with a blend of the ambiance mic. The two guitars were closely matched to an Oberheim Matrix synth 2000 slightly crunched through Zvex Octane 3, and Meastro B:Assmaster on bass with octave pedal. On other sections: Zvex Machine, WH-4 and TS-9.
@SHININGofficial Z-Vex pedals are amazing. If only I could afford them. hahaha. Glad to see good pedals being used by such amazing artists such as yourself.
This band is so unbelievebly fuckin genius!!! Saw them live at Roadburn 2010 in Tilburg Holland, absolutely my favo band for now, made me think of a mixture of John Zorn crazy Sax-Freak music and Meshuggah in collaboration with Venetian Snares..just a idea..i'm also drunk ehheheh
Hi! On this song, and also most of the rest of the album, we use a 6-string guitar with all strings in standard E tuning, but with the lowest string tuned down to H. This string is usually a standard E-string (0.49), so it will have to be tuned slightly below H to compensate for the rising in pitch at the attacks. On the other hand, this again will have to be compensated for with a slight upwards bend on sustained long notes, so the pitch don't drop too low. Cheers, Munkeby

There are two bands (at least) called Shining.
This is one. They are from Norway and are an avant-garde metal band who combine elements of death metal and free jazz to create there sound.
There is another Shining from Sweden (I think), who I haven't heard, but I understand are a pretty straight-forward black metal band.

does anyone know what guitartuning they use on this album?
