@desolatesoul87 It's a football casuals movie, sort of like greenstreet except not overly exagerated and set in the 70's/80's I think. It's not a bad film, based on a book. This song plays at a fitting moment in it. I found this song through the movie, but knew of vienna/young savage/slip away etc through my mum's various 'That's the 70's!' sort of cd's ahaha. I'd reccomend it, decent acting.
Post- Foxx Ultravox never reached this level of beauty or mystery, But with a more radio-friendly sound they did sell a shedload more records. It was ever thus...
This is the first song that has ever made me fell awash with several emotions at once, gutted I was only born in 1988, would of loved to been around to see them!
Loved John Foxx and Ultravox from the first listen back in 77. Like Magazine, they never got the critical acclaim and financial support they absolutely deserved. Completely ahead of their time, both bands. Attention to the heart and the art rather than the bank account and the hit parade. Well that was part of the punk ethic....now that the big labels are all in total collapse I have a quiet laugh. The enemy has destroyed itself at last.
this song made me love the film Awaydays, somehow it summed up everything that was going on and for me, gave the film a more profound feel. An excellent choice for the movie however i am but pages away from finishing the book and its kicking the movie adaptations ass.
hey mate, ive finished the book and i have to say its up there among my favourites. i totally agree with you when you say that the book is really funny, had more than a few giggles. i think what makes it special is that its very sombre too, a fine blend. loved it loads. gonna look out for more kevin sampson books. :)
i love both incarnations of ultravox, got no time for the view that only foxx's version was any good, except that people are entitled to that opinion. the four albums with midge produced some wonderful stuff
Agreed 100%. I despise the elitists who trash Midge Ure, who is just as much of a musical and lyrical genius as John Foxx. Vienna, Rage In Eden, Quartet and Lament are extraordinary. Although U-Vox is, for the most part, a terrible album, even that had a couple good songs: All Fall Down is an incredible song (obviously celtic sounding, not electronic) and I also really like All In One Day.
@RockyBalboa7777 Yeah I agree entirely, four beautiful albums they did with Midge. The icy synths, mock classical piano, heavy rock guitar! The highly idiosyncratic lyrics - people don't get the humour of those lyrics! They never sacrificed their sound and European aesthetic for a stab at US success. I've recently got more into U-Vox but agree it's no comparison whatsoever to the other four albums....
@RockyBalboa7777 continuing... I'm in New Zealand so have no hope of seeing the reunion, waiting for the CD/DVD release. I hope they do record again in the classic style, but if they don't we still have 7 classic albums. I'm still heavily into Foxx's new solo stuff - that's great too! My favourite Foxx-era album is Ha Ha Ha for it's punked up intensity.
@RockyBalboa7777 - It's especially bad for people to be like that when it was Foxx (and Simon) who left...it's not like Billy, Chris & Warren tossed them out to replace them w/ Midge Ure. I consider them somewhat different bands, but neither is inherently better or worse than the other.
@AshRotten101 - i understand completely. with every poignant keyboard stroke part of myself. you feel it in your breast-plate, a liquid pressure. i read you loud and clear.
@AshRotten101@AshRotten101 - i understand completely. with every poignant keyboard stroke part of myself. you feel it in your breast-plate, a liquid pressure. i read you loud and clear.
I remember thinking that I wished Billy Currie's violin could have gone on longer on the fade out finish, but I realize now (30 years later) that this is what separated 'prog' from 'punk', and thank goodness for that...
There's a bit of a meeting point in the two, but not much, lol...long live John Foxx, Magazine et al...but also, long live Peter Hammill/VdGG, Popol Vuh, etc.
This album is available now on cd. (I've got the LP- now sadly scratched) It contains a couple of extra tracks (reworks of existing tracks). Sorry to hear you lost your LPs.
Great cool song.... nice lennon-bowie styled lyrics and haunting euro melody.....conjurs up visions of Soho New York & London of late 70's.... great era..... I saw John Fox and Ultravox at Club Hurrah in NY in 1978.

Decent Foxx song, the other two lead singers of Ultravox would not of been able to of emulated this style of early Ultravox...

The John Foxx-era Ultravox! was a band to contend with in the early New Wave years; very few had pinned down such a sound and made it theirs.
