i thought the first episode was in black and white? im so confused, than again i also wasn't born when this was first on the air, so how would i know.
The entire series (all 139 episodes) was syndicated, beginning in September 1970, 'ClassicTV'- I know, because I saw it on WPIX-TV, Channel 11, New York [initially, weeknights at 7pm]. It's just that most stations didn't show the first 30 episodes because they WERE in black and white, concentrating on the color episodes instead {Channel 11 initially did the same, but started airing the first season in 1971}. When the show was resyndicated by DFS Program Exchange in 1984- color episodes only.
That's because creator/producer Sidney Sheldon wanted Jeannie to speak in her native language after Captain Nelson initially released her from her bottle, 'sagi'. But he couldn't find an Arabic tutor for Barbara to learn her original [first draft script] dialogue. He DID find someone at UCLA who could teach her to speak Farsi phonetically- that's why she sounds "authentic" {and she had more of that dialogue in the unaired version of the pilot}.
The creator of the Urusei Yatsura series-the precursor to the "magic girlfriend" genre in anime and manga-cited this show, and Bewitched as a direct influence.
Although I love this show, it annoys me that they don't pain themselves to keep the details straight- for example, in this ep Tony says his mother lives in Salt Lake City, but in later episodes, she lives in the house in Wisconsin where he grew up...

Jeannie is speaking Farsi, not Arabic. Her first phrase is "Your wish is my command Master". Her second phrase means "You have the face of a wise and fearless Caliph". Her third phrase means "How fortunate I am to have you as my Master". Seemourgh can mean Falcon or bird in general. Next phrase means "I am sorry if I have displeased you Master". Kheshti means Boat or ship. And her next phrase means " You are displeased with me Master?"

This was originally filmed and telecast in black and white (as the entire first season was)- creator/producer Sidney Sheldon was denied the funding to film it in color [even though HE offered to pay the extra cost out of his own pocket, since he owned the series] because a Screen Gems executive told him, "Sidney, don't throw your money away". Sheldon believed they- and NBC- thought the series wouldn't last a full season. When it did, he began filming color episodes for season two.
@MsTvseries2010 I thought it was in Black and White. I'm betting there's a color print somewhere, but it was probably stored away somewhere that's irretrievable.
@Capt777harris The first season was colorized in 2000 using more advanced methods than those from the 1980s. Of course, they had later seasons originally filmed in color to use as a guide for what the colors are supposed to be.
This was one of the shows that I would watch. It made laugh more than a few times and I discovered one of my favorite songs ("out and about" with boyce and hart). Thank you for posting this. and what a stunner for the sixties and puts some of the "stick figures" that run around on the networks today. And Larry Hagman before he became the evil rotten "JR Ewing" on "Dallas".

I love I Dream of Jeannie. I am happy for the uploads. Thanks. It is neat to see it in color, but when i was growing up, we didn't have color television, so B&W or not, it was all monochrome to me.
When Barbara Eden first got the role as Jeannie, she found out she was pregnant. So she was mostly covered up and wore long veils. She's also a lot more fleshy in the face than in other episodes. The director strategically shot clever angles around her.
Originally telecast on September 18, 1965 in black and white (the first 30 episodes were filmed that way, 'luv'). Sidney Sheldon WANTED to film the series in color from the beginning; he even offered to pay the extra $400 an episode for color, but an executive of Screen Gems/Columbia, his distributor, refused his request, telling him, "Sidney, don't throw your money away". Sheldon later believed they {and NBC} thought the show wasn't going to last a full season to be worth filming in color!
@luvjoi0817 They were. Sony colorized all the B&W episodes of "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched", thinking that viewers would like the color episodes better.
Also, when this show first went into syndication about 1971, only colored episodes were eligible to be seen initially, so that would probably have been indication the B&W episodes were colorized for that purpose, until such restrictions were removed sometime in the 1980s.
FUNTASTIC!!
