  • hey, it's calypso!

  • I am one of the children that are the last to do this as part of my english gcse. By next year children in year 10 and 11 will not being learning this poem (& other poems) because of the stupid examiners changing the course (the freaks).

  • im in year 8 and studing this yh im smart

  • @jesebert2 Lol im in year 7 and ahead as well lol

  • Everyone in my class (I'm in an elite group of 10) after hearing it for the first time, described the following scene: "AAAARRRGGHHH!!! RUN! IT'S GONNA KILL US!"

(The persona in the poet is standing, embracing the Hurricane) "Come to me! Tell me why you are here!" This reminds me of Storm, especially the X Men: Evolution episode where some tribal leader tries to take her powers!

  • OMG i wish i was there i would kill fry hes so mean >:(

  • paaahaa!!!!!!!!!!! :(

DON'T RATE ME DOWN! IT'S JUST MY COMMENT!

haha, just laughin, you can rate me down.

  • its a beautiful poem

  • This is an awesome reading!

  • I agree

  • 'Fearful and reassuring'

What a beautiful use of antithesis. Poetry is highly thought provoking and fascinating. We are studying this for GCSE English language, and although many are alienated by such a subject - I am in love with Poetry.

Remember everyone, the earth is the earth is the earth.

  • I'm with you :3 x

I am too studying this in GCSE English :D

i hated english in year nine but it soon became more understandable and very interesting! x

  • I just found this. That was an incredible recital of a wonderful poem. Totally in touch with our one, true nature.

  • She's from the Caribbean but has lived here in the UK since 1977. I love her voice.

  • Who doesn't love a Caribbean voice?!

    This Poem is truly spectacular

  • Oh haha btw guys, check out the video I did of it on my profile? Thank you! :D x

  • My favourite poem out of our Anthology book :) Amazing.

  • yeah, but you have to write a lot of crap about metaphors and juxtaposisions, even Grace probably didn't even think of it when she wrote the poem...no, i like 'Kid', cos it's about Dick Grayson

  • Fantastic

  • My good Swedish friend Youssuf Brynjarcaţ is studying for his AQA English exams in England and very much enjoys this poem.

  • I am doing the same exam! :) This poem is amazing.

  • this is literature

  • I am studying this in English. It is really good

  • I had to do this in high School and to be honest I didint appreciate it. BUT lol now looking back on it and hearing it (not from a study perspective) I find it bloody amazing.

  • nice one

  • This is a GCS text

  • This is a really great video. Thank you for posting it.

  • I hate doing poetry in english! It fucking sucks. Why do we have to learn this fuck! When was the last time you saw a high paid person writing a huge essay about a poem! Exactly!

  • You don't! Why waste your teacher's time by getting entered for YOUR GCSE qualification? If you don't need it for your future, then don't do it!

  • Because this comes under English LANGUAGE. Not literature. Without a decent English language grade nobody will take you for a job cos they'll think you have a poor standard english. Tell me when was the last time you needed poetry from different cultures to help you for interviews or to get a job! Please tell me. Exactly, you can't! stupid faggot

  • I hope your verbal abuse makes you feel better. You probably won't have to study this type of poetry ever again - BUT your grade in English Language will make a difference to you future career. I should know, having invigilated the exam today!!!

  • Superb poetry, I am incredibly inspired by the work of Grace Nichols.

  • Why do you have a thumbs down for stating that you like Grace Nichols' Poetry?

  • Hi i would like to say that i'm so sorry:) and i would like to correct my mistake i'v looked into it more if you look on youtube Hurricane? the great storm in England 1987, and it will show you it really was a Hurricane the name for it i think is Florence.

As for Grace Nichols it's beautiful the way she tells it THE TRUTH:) i love it, and think i was in that Hurricane in London.

  • :)

im nto bothered but well done for looking more into it

  • I do not get it i remember that night very well it was not called a Hurricane it was always called the great storm of 1987 for the last two yeas in the TV Documentaries are calling the Hurricane we don't know what to think that's why people are getting it wrong,

IT WAS NOT CALLED A HURRICANE BEFORE!!!

  • Well bring that up with the author or her publisher.

  • Thanks, it will help me a lot for my examen.

  • as said..impossible

sea waters need to be like 21c here there like 12c

impossible . never happened never will

  • Impossible for England to have a hurricane...

  • Never say never...

We have had tail ends of hurricanes before Debbie(1961), Lili(1996), Gordon & Helene(2006)

And of course the great storm of 1987 which I now agree wasnt a hurricane, but did have wind speeds that were equivalent to one

  • Fair enough we may have tail ends but unless our sea temperature rises to 26 degrees C or more... It is impossible for Britain to have a hurricane

  • wonderful poem !!!

  • Tomorrow. :)

  • hope so.... FEW MORE DAYS... :(

  • one of my favourite poems!

  • I hope some of you find this useful for exam revision

  • this is the whole reason y i am listening to this. i gt exam at 1pm 05.06.08

i used to hate it(poems) but now i enjoy listening.

  • Thanks for putting this on here Jake. My SEN learning group have really benefited from being able to watch and hear these poems before sitting the paper today.
