I imitated Foster Brooks when I was about 15 years old, when he was on the Bill Cosby variety show back in the early 70's. I actually memorized a skit where "they" were going to make him President of CBS.

Brooks "Drunk" routine was modeled after his father... who he use to imitate. There are "mean drunks" and "happy drunks (bad and good if you will). Same as Businessmen, church-goers, cab-drivers, teachers, etc. Brooks is imitating a man who is drunk, NOT an alcoholic.

I've seen a few of the live versions done by other performers. They blast right through their routine. None of them display anything close to Brooks' uncanny knack of capturing the nuances in the behavior of a real person on their way down the path to total inebriation. Neither do they possess his ingenious comedic timing. These others are amusing, but are also-rans. Foster Brooks was one-of-a-kind, a true classic.

@andynystromofficial Actually the drunk act was created from his dad. His dad used to do the drunk act when my grandfather was younger and he got it from him. It started out as a gag. He also never had a problem with giving up drinking. Even though he drank A LOT in his younger years, he actually quit cold turkey on a $10 bet. He never felt that giving up drinking was that big of a deal so he didn't struggle with wanting a drink.
