All the Bonds are great. There are no junk bonds in the James Bond franchise. All of them from Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig have been carefully chosen. Those who understand class will know that the Bonds mentioned above are all triple A rating material. So quit comparing like pansies and give them their due credit.
Dalton sort of thought the franchise had lost their way during moores era because of a loss of sense of reality.Daltonm when he got the role , sort of went back in time trying to emulate Ian Flemings James Bond(the one in the novel) and boy wasnt he successful. One of the most handsome actors and im sure he would appeal more to the "real and true" james bond fans , absolutely love him.
His charecter is appealing to intelligent viewers and not to the hilli-billies of america who like brosnan
I STILL Think that Dalton's bond was the proto type for Craigs and I also think Dalton never quite got a chance to really be bond. He only did two bond films and BOTH where VERY different. Then Brosnan came along who was GREAT(IMO) but got stuck with Crappy films(Goldeneye was his best and then TND) Cause of all the CG and etc.
i loved watching this in the cinema as a 12 year old with my brother, we both admired and respected Timothy Dalton's Bond, reminds me of slightly better times ,and agree with daytripper, back in the days when Bond could treat a lady well, and have great chemistry with his female star. The Living Daylights was a welcome change after the fun but flippancy of Roger Moore, himself a good actor, too,.
I actually like Daniel Craig's Bond. He's raw, rough, and emotional--but there is a strong implication in certain sequences of "Casino Royale" (and a few in "Quantum") that time and experience will refine his Bond into something like Dalton's Bond.
I SO agree. IN SOME things Danial Craig is pretty OK, but not as Bond. For the Bond movies not to seem silly, it always works best when there is humor and he can laugh at himself. But between the dead dialog, and lack of clever action (not just shooting but FUN action scenes) and Craig's (funeral parlor director) presentation of Bond I have literally gone to sleep during them. I just do not bother with them anymore. So I patiently wait for someone with a sexy fun pulse again to replace him. ;)
The Living Daylights has always been my favorite. I have never understood why some people hate Daltons Bond. I always thought he fit the role very well. I just thought the whole movie and music was great I don't care what anyone says!
You know, when I first saw 'The Living Daylights' about 10 years ago, I dismissed it as just another Bond film. But earlier this year, I rewatched this and 'License to Kill.' I've got to say I loved this one better. Dalton and d'Abo looked great together and had wonderful chemistry. The only thing it lacked was a memorable villain (sorry, Joe Don Baker), which 'License to Kill' definitely had (Robert Davi rules!). And this song was a perfect end to this film.
Whenever I hear this song, my heart just goes into meltdown..... I mean there are so many beautiful songs out there, some by Teena Marie, yet this just encapsulates feelings that you can't get from her songs. The words and the voice of Ms Hinds truly in the words of Roy Ayers just simply "Sends Me."
Ah, the last John Barry bond. Oh my goodness, this music carries a unique place in the canon of Bond music, the man who wrote Goldfinger's last connection with 007. I remember seeing this at Westwood Villiage in 87 and thinking, Barry's still got so much more beautiful music left for Bond, little did I know then this was the last.
Unfortunetly Dalton quit. He apparently decided to go back to acting in the style he was trained for....it was his call...but he was a great 007...since Brosnans contract with Remington Steele was up and Broccoli was waiting for him , he got the part. It all worked out that way. However, The Living Daylights is my favorite 007 film to date. The chemistry between Dalton and Maryam D'abo is priceless....
@daytripper231 Well the stories where NUMERIOUS to why he quit. one(And posibbly the more...logical) reason he left was because he didn't want to wait around on his ass waiitng for them to decide to make a new one. SUPPOSIBLY to he also was scheduled to make a third and it was called..(I THINK) Property of a lady.
@daytripper231 I think the problem was that internal problems at MGM put a pause period on the Bond franchise that lasted so long that by the time the film that would have been his 3rd (which became GoldenEye), Dalton felt he was too old and that too much time had passed. It's really unfortunate. If only Dalton had stepped in (and Roger Moore had stepped out) with "For Your Eyes Only" we could have had five Bond films from him.
exactly timothy dalton should i have done atleast 3 to 4 movies . i hate pierce brosnan . this song always reminds me the the best era of james bond series.
Timothy Dalton was the most balanced Bond & Maryam d'Abo was the cutest Bond girl. Maybe a bit too naive, but after all she did good job playing sensitive & delicate Kara Milovy, way better than Pam Bouvier character.
Totall yagree Dalton was the best Bond since Connery, sauve sophisacated but with a ruthless side. shame he didnt have the scripts and the money that they have spent on the last few films.
Tim Dalton was brilliant as Bond, very very close to the Bond Ian Fleming wrote about, charming, shopicated, but with a cruel streak, the others all have their own qualities but TD was one of the best
I agree. The Living Daylights was the first Bond movie I ever saw. Since then I have been a huge fan and have collected all the films. While I appreciate all of the Bonds, Dalton is still my favorite. He really did represent Flemming's novels the closest. I also think he was underrated too as a Bond. It seems only serious Bond fans can appreciate Dalton.
I reckon this song has a flawed brilliance in the same style as Bowie's Absolute Beginners. Both songs have wonderfully beautiful tunes with minor key changes but ultimately never really take off. It'd be like having a one night stand with a supermodel, gorgeous on the surface but no real substance. : )
I was never a big Chrissie Hynde fan, or the Pretenders for that matter. But this may have been the best "credits" song on a Bond film, beginning or ending.
Orweller3 is right. Too much droll on Craig and the more Fleming-correct bitter and tormented Bond. I was born in '67. The 007 I've known is from the films, not the books. No offence Ian.
Dalton was a damn good Bond. I just wish the storylines to TLD and LTK were a little better.
Well I think you all said it really quite correctly....beautifully sad ballad by Chrissie and Dalton was and is such a great Bond who brought qualities to the role that none of the others really captured. It is phucking annoying when prats droll on about how Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever....Connery etc: all brought something special that was needed at the time, for the time. Dalton was it ...I wish I had a finger's worth of that cat's style...nuff said.
I agree with you all. Tim Dalton is still great, and this film is also still great, and my favorite of the series, as much as I love the 2 latest ones. This is THE GREATEST BOND SONG EVER.
I agree; it's too bad that Dalton only got to do 2; I think he was originally contracted for 3 or 4, but then in the early 90s they had all the legal issues and he just quit from it. Most underrated Bond of all.
Classiest opening and classiest closing ever seen in Bond.
I shall postpone the praise of Dalton, because he will forever be untouched with splendor he presented in LVD and LTK. John Barry simply outdone himself with the most generous score ever. This is Bond for those that understand finer lines of life.
Even if 007 is surface of POP culture, those Bonds are literary treasure if you matched them with anything that came at later date. After all, the test of time always confirms those qualities.
When someone today can look away from emphatic approach found in almost anything we witness today.
Music, design, reflection of one's creativity or even pinnacle of POP culture like Bond. So when you detect those qualities in Daltons movies, that makes me a happy man. We are not alone, there many voices who treasure those Bonds with same aplomb as we do.
Dalton's movies will again reminds us what was like to live in more interesting times. To offer intelligent (while still fun) presentation with emotion and life-like acting of true substance. Real locations and real people with (thanks to Richard Maibaum) proper story. How did we departure from here to sociopath presentation of Daniel Craig's Bond? Where meaningless violence and ego trips fuel to supply the only truth of present Bond : License to sell to best bidder :(
Timothy Dalton was IMHO the best of the Bonds and (Again IMHO) Maryam D'abo comes first before all the Bond girls. The music in this song is indisputably the best of John Berry's love themes and the Pretenders fit it perfectly. Living Daylights may not of been the best of the Bond stories but it certainly had a lot of other things going for it.
Thank you so much for complementing the same thoughts I had. I feel like we have known each other for longer than expected. I too agree that Timothy Dalton outbeats the other Bonds simply because of his blend of sensitivity and charm which was something that even Sean Connery lacked in.
And Maryam D'abo? God, my eyes just well up in tears seeing what a goddess of crowned jewels she was as a Bond girl. Fuck Pussy Galore!
Love the Living Daylights. Maryam D'Abo and Timothy Dalton are terrific together in this movie. Very romantic and she is as beautiful as he is handsome so they make the perfect couple. In my mind, the pairing of Maryam and Timothy is much better than the two Bond women in Licence to Kill. Talisa Soto is just a plain slut, and Carey Lowell is dull. That's why I'm so captivated by Maryam's performance as a Bond girl.

You literally took the words outta my mouth!!!! The secret to them having chemistry comes from the fact that they're both dorks. If Pierce Bronsan or Sam Mcneill got cast (they both almost did), then it wouldn't have work. Because they're far from dorky and D'abo character was highly naive. They've would've been too good for her, like Connery was to Jill St. John in DAF!!
They are terrific in that film. It is one of the only bond films where I can honestly see the two main characters fall in love. Plus I think this song fits them soooo well.
Great song. I watching the Living Daylights the other day and something I noticed Dalton had green eyes. Green eyes! I had never seen anything like this, it was surreal to look at.
The musical version of this song is so Beautiful. It's played when they are riding into vienna via horse carriage. I would love that so much! Any takers?... Thanx for posting...
so bad that dalton only played 2 bond movies the first was his best (my opinion best bond ever) and the second was not so good i mean he WAS james bond not like roger or sean but different
I agree that Dalton was good. I disagree that he was the best Bond ever, but The Living Daylights was amazing! And the interesting thing is is that Dalton reread the Fleming stories to try and channel Ian Fleming's character.
i disagree. i dont mean to get too deep into this discussion, but there were some nice slow ballads that didnt carry a bond feel in the music, but the lyrics fitted, and i think this song does that. examples: we have all the time in the world, moonraker, all time high, nobody does it better.
oops, my apologies fallgropen. i didn't realize you explained yourself later down the comments...
now a song that didn't fit the bond feel was in License to kill at the very end when the credits are rolling... patti labelle singing "if you asked me to"
To fallgropen: this song does have a 'Bond' feel but in a more eloquent way...you have to be a true Bond lover to see that.....but I get the point you're trying to make. If you notice...there's a 'mystique' to this song..and that's what BOND is all about..lvo2y'all~ Can't wait for Bond22~ Moonchildmary22
I like the melody of the music and lyrics, its got a kinder of fairytale, to it when the credits roll at the end of the film with big Dolby stereo sound on big JBL loudspeakers!
Last week Daniel Craig announced the he almost quit the franchise after 3 years without news.
One more year and the second 'hard edge' Bond would repeat the first, quitting after just 2 movies.
Fortunately, the new movie will start production next year, at least.

You have no taste whatsoever. Talisa was a fantastic Bong Girl.

LOL. completely agree with you there. talisa was a fox.

I agree with you completely.

And the interesting thing is is that Dalton reread the Fleming stories to try and channel Ian Fleming's character.

i disagree. i dont mean to get too deep into this discussion, but there were some nice slow ballads that didnt carry a bond feel in the music, but the lyrics fitted, and i think this song does that. examples: we have all the time in the world, moonraker, all time high, nobody does it better.

oops, my apologies fallgropen. i didn't realize you explained yourself later down the comments...
now a song that didn't fit the bond feel was in License to kill at the very end when the credits are rolling... patti labelle singing "if you asked me to"
M00Dswing9 3 years ago
To fallgropen: this song does have a 'Bond' feel but in a more eloquent way...you have to be a true Bond lover to see that.....but I get the point you're trying to make. If you notice...there's a 'mystique' to this song..and that's what BOND is all about..lvo2y'all~ Can't wait for Bond22~ Moonchildmary22

Does anybody have the instrumental version, "Into Vienna"?
pepe1958 4 years ago
i LOVE the instrumental! i'd say TLD has the best soundtrack of any bond movie! (last one made by the legendary composer too)

@sternberg1 Found it, thanks!
By the way, can somebody clarify some of the lyrics here for me? The following line I can't quite get:
"All my life...[I have been waiting]? ...[I've been belated]?"
Thanks!

Funny the ending credits is what I remember most about the movie. I'm into hop hop but I love this song...so dreamy.

should be the actual theme for the living daylights

I like the melody of the music and lyrics, its got a kinder of fairytale, to it when the credits roll at the end of the film with big Dolby stereo sound on big JBL loudspeakers!
