A nationality is only a label given to you by the government when you were born. It means nothing to me. Everybody on earth is a human being and that's how I see everybody. Not "American" or "French." Nationalism is for people who have nothing to be proud of in themselves so they resort to a label that the government gave them... so they wave around a piece of fabric with colors on it and worship it as if it was God or another deity.

I only care about who they are as a person, not who their ancestors are.

I see myself as an extension of my ancestors in that I'm carrying on their legacy both culturally and genetically. But I've been in places that have different cultures and I have no problem with it.
I don't identify with anybody, really. I just see me as myself, not what race or nationality people say I am. I'm just a person. I think the term that fits this best is to "agree to disagree." I am opposed to nationalism (and nationalities themselves for that matter), but you are not. You're free to think how you want to and I am as well. I'm also glad we kept this civil. A nationality is only a label given to you by the government when you were born. It means nothing to me. Everybody on earth is a human being and that's how I see everybody. Not "American" or "French." Nationalism is for people who have nothing to be proud of in themselves so they resort to a label that the government gave them... so they wave around a piece of fabric with colors on it and worship it as if it was God or another deity.

@Thramal The government? What about my government, then, which claims both that there are no ethnic swedes and that everyone with swedish citizenship are swedes? When I present myself as swedish, an ethnicity going back several milennia and with a nationality status going back about 1000 years, I'm not really using a "label given to me by my government". Instead, I'm using an identity which has been passed on by blood, culture and soil for generations, going back to the neolithic.

Why rely on that being your identity? Why not use yourself as your identity? What you've done and your own personal achievements? I really don't see nationality or ethnicity being something to identify with. I know I don't do it when referring to myself and when I am speaking with or hearing about somebody, what ethnicity they are or where they are born does not matter to me. I only care about who they are as a person, not who their ancestors are.

@Thramal It's about one's heritage.Being that I'm very interested in history (especially that of my ancestors), I both know and care for my bloodline(s), the way people of those lines have lived, what they've had to go through and so on. I see myself as an extension of my ancestors in that I'm carrying on their legacy both culturally and genetically. Furthermore, Sweden has been pretty much monocultural since about 4000-5000 BC, so it's quite easy for me to identify with my nationality.

@Thramal (Cont.) Now, obviously I too care more about people's personality and behaviour than their bloodlines or culture (even though I'm still against multiculturalism in European nation states). I don't know where you're from, but I suppose your country may be more multicultural/multi-ethnic "by nature" so think of my ethno- and national centrism like this: Who do you identify more with, your own family (Ethnicity/nationality) or a family in the rainforests of africa/the siberian tundra etc?

I identify with myself, not any particular group of people. I know many people from around the world who have loads in common with myself (one who is almost like my twin), so a nation really does not define a person. A person defines themselves. I live in the US, so it is very multi-everything. However, I live in a mostly white area so I am not directly exposed to other cultures unless I travel. But I've been in places that have different cultures and I have no problem with it.

I don't identify with anybody, really. I just see me as myself, not what race or nationality people say I am. I'm just a person. I think the term that fits this best is to "agree to disagree." I am opposed to nationalism (and nationalities themselves for that matter), but you are not. You're free to think how you want to and I am as well. I'm also glad we kept this civil. Also, please try to refrain from generalisations. Not all "Yanks" are how they are stereotyped to be.

It all begins when you love the place you were born so much, eventually a lot of people let that "love" take control of what they think and how they treat other people. You can claim that states like the austro-hungarian empire consisted of dozens of ethnic and cultural groups, yet the fact is that those groups mostly lived secluded, meaning that they still maintained a unifying cultural and national identity.

I think the main difference between nationalism and patriotism is that nationalism is patriotism taken to the extreme (the dark side if you will). Where you assert your national doctrine above that of the general welfare of all nations. Patriotism would fall inline with the general welfare of all nations while not infringing on the rights of other nations.
