Possibly the greatest song ever written! I remember it being released by Argent back in the day, blew my teenage mind. This is a beautiful performance - you can tell they're having a whale of a time.
I love this song..I remember back in those days when "God" was alive ...These days every younger person is Atheist, cant say that i blame them for feeling that way.....now..We were very fortunate to have grown up in such a beautiful era :)
Been watching lots since getting my memory jogged to how good Russia Ballard / Argent / Colin Blunstone were .. Watching recent old grey whistle test shows.
@dinksters84 Mmm it depends by the point of view...I think that Kiss' version is one milion times better 'cause i'm fool of hard rock..If you love classic rock like Argent it's natural that you prefer this version :)
I see so many comments raving about the kIss version yet it's a cover. It was Russ who wrote it and did a good job performing it with Rod. I'm sure kISS would pay tribute to Russ for writing it. @cheeseppuff Because the Gene Simmons gang are big badass media manipulators whereas Russ just writes excellent songs. I got Imdb to remove a credit for Gene Simmons as the writer of this song !! He only tweaked the lyrics to make it American . Life , labour , neighbour. snalis trees and Cliff Richard were all taken out and replaced with Hot guitar etc. This changed the sense of the song entirely. The Kiss version was an affirmation of the rock life style : The original was less so .
Good Lord, I remember this on the Whistle Test. Blew me away. What a fantastic song. It's like a fundie preacher goin' at it. God gave rock and roll to YOU!
I prefer the KISS version, because it was a bit of a tribute to Eric Carr, who couldn't record on it because he was far too sick. He eventually passed away. RIP, Eric.
@beatlesbiggestfan100 He was in surgery during the recording, and was out of hopsital when it came to the music video. He was actually wearing a wig in it, because he had Chemotherapy done to him.
@JustMeNotU100 I'm a Petra fan, buddy, but Petra recorded Argent's song with permission to change the words. I have just seen the recent Petra Doc and Bob Hartman says this himself. I do like Petra's version best though:) However this version is cute with the Cliff Richard line:)
I'm a huge fan of the version of this song featuring Steve Vai. I'm glad I got to hear the original. It puts things into perspective. I appreciate G.G.RnR.t.Y even more now. Even though I wasn't alive when it was written, I like :)
"God Gave Rock and Roll to You" is a 1973 released song by British band Argent. It was recorded in 1971 during the sessions for their album All Together Now, but originally did not appear as an album track until 1973's In Deep, and was released as a successful single at that time. [wiki]
Great band. Great song. Pity they're miming. The Old Grey Whistle test was quite often as fraudulent as TOTP.. The only difference being, bands would record new versions of their songs for the Whistle Test then mime to them. Whereas, on TOTP, bands usually mimed to their records. At the end of the day, it's all miming.

@wezcoastcustom Sorry, but Russ Ballard wrote this song. It is the original played, performed and recorded by Argent in the early 70's and I had the pleasure of listening to it in Rod Argents flat in Woodside Park, North London.
"God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You II" is a song by the American hard rock band Kiss. It was first released as a single in 1991, [...] included on Kiss' 1992 album Revenge.
The song was a reworking of the ARGENT 1973 song "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" and is credited as being written by Russ Ballard, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Bob Ezrin.
It was the last Kiss song to feature long time drummer Eric Carr before his death in 1991.

@CraigG1960 Definitely a mime. You can see Russ waiting to hit the strings at the right second and Rod trying to do same on the keys. It was probably a BBC edict because the studio couldn't cope with a 'live' performance.

I first heard this song as a cover by KISS on Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. When I heard the original, my mind was blown. Thanks for uploading this! :-D
