  • Just caught them in Glasgow. Ballard is getting younger I swear. I want the picture in his attic.

  • Brilliant, Russ Ballard also wrote and recorded since you've been gone by rainbow, years before they had a big hit with it.

  • They don't need no makeup and high heels ;) Some of the greatest songwriting around too, They don't make em like they used to!!

  • Kiss sucks!

  • love both versions.

  • Λίγα λόγια για τους KISS,μην σας γαμήσω παλιομαλάκες!!

  • i actually thought this was written by Kiss!!.....Doh !

  • Great song and great musicians !

  • Possibly the greatest song ever written! I remember it being released by Argent back in the day, blew my teenage mind. This is a beautiful performance - you can tell they're having a whale of a time.

  • this one is way better than the Kiss version, its the Argent's song any way :) love it!

  • Love the original Argent version.

  • Also, Kiss version is God Gave Rock and Roll To You II

  • I like both versions, and I have both on my I Pod

  • I love classic rock like Argent. It all start there.

  • 4:03

    Astounding.

  • I like KISS more. But nice song anyway.

  • Fabulous song, Kiss? I don't think so!!

  • Who in the world would not LOVE this...classic

  • I love this song!

  • God gave Old Grey Whistle Test to us, and lo, we were indeed richly blessed

  • BELIEVE IT OR GET OFF THE BOAT

  • looks like liam

  • I love this song..I remember back in those days when "God" was alive ...These days every younger person is Atheist, cant say that i blame them for feeling that way.....now..We were very fortunate to have grown up in such a beautiful era :)

  • @JennaP46 God's still alive, it's just that we've all forgoten what it is.

  • so freaken good! thanks for sharing

  • KISS Detona essa versão

  • Awesome version! Argent was an incredible band!

  • fuck kiss for even trying!

  • the original and best version by far

  • this is the real deal, kiss are phony sell outs

  • This is COOL!!!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!

  • Nice TY :) QC

  • Russ Ballard of course. Check out versions of his "I don't believe in miracles ... Great versions by Russia himself and also Colin Blunstone.

  • Been watching lots since getting my memory jogged to how good Russia Ballard / Argent / Colin Blunstone were .. Watching recent old grey whistle test shows.

  • Anyone who thinks the Kiss version is better has no taste. This is far superior.

  • God gave Rock and Roll......to Argent

  • CANTA COMO RIGO TOVAR!!!!!!

  • The bassist looks like a cross between James May and Mario

  • Mmmm what a beautiful man!!

And this pisses all over kiss!!

  • @dinksters84 Mmm it depends by the point of view...I think that Kiss' version is one milion times better 'cause i'm fool of hard rock..If you love classic rock like Argent it's natural that you prefer this version :)

  • fantastic

  • God gave rock and roll to you by Argent, sounds it's the same of the old Deep Purple, very good this version ;-)

  • bill and ted

  • So this is the first one right? But Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons help'd wrote this song i've read on wikipedia.

  • @Mr8bitgamer Kiss' version changed the words, thats why Gene and Paul got some writing credit

  • @christopherwv1977 oh... ok thanks for the info. Thats kind a stupid actualy! I've seen Kiss live playin' this song.

  • @Mr8bitgamer Russ Ballard wrote this.

  • I see so many comments raving about the kIss version yet it's a cover. It was Russ who wrote it and did a good job performing it with Rod. I'm sure kISS would pay tribute to Russ for writing it. Also, generally the first version you hear is the one which you benchmark others against. I have heard both versions and I stick with Argent for the originality. The kISS version sounds overblown like many oher things I see on TV from across the pond.

  • It did.

  • This is my first tie hearing this. I hope it can match the vocal break in Kiss's version.

  • Very nice. KISS' version is obviously far superior.

  • Hold your head up Argent..great job ya did with this song..."originally".

  • This and the kiss version are fucking awesome. Two maginficent bands and one magnificent song!

  • @chinnythewarrior KISS does everything bigger and better!!!!

  • Don't misunderstand me, this is great, but I think KISS's version is better

  • Long Live Russ Ballard he wrote and sang the original you don,t get better than that. How bout those cool shades he only has one eye you know.Argent also did the original version of "liar" , made famous by 3 dog night...... oh no!!

  • you couldn't fake on togwt cause it was live.....fantastic, phenomenon, truly a classic, will never be beaten.

  • it's good to hear the orignal version at last. it is quite a good version. I think i know why i like it because it is on the old grey whistle test

  • Thumbs up if Bill and Ted brought you here :)

  • I must like Kiss version(I am a biggest fan) But the true version: It's ok but Kiss version on Revenge album is better...

  • i like kiss' version of this song just a little bit more but that doesn't mean that i don't like the original because this song kicks ass

  • I think it's individual for who like argent and kiss.. Personal i think both is very good listenings, they are made in two different time..

  • Rock On!

  • for me kiss version is better, more power, energy more rock n roll

  • this one is awseome but kiss nailed it aswell as putting their own spin on it so anyone whos playin favourites in a rude asshole way STFU!!! they're the same song!

  • Thanks for posting this. Argent were great and Russ Ballard deserves HOF recognition.

  • The KISS version is piss poor compared to this.

  • Cool song, first time I ever heard it.

  • God gave Rocky Road to you

  • @aaallleeexxx62 hahahahahaha

  • Does anyone know why Kiss put in their album version that they are also part of the writers, when their version is pretty much the same?

  • Every time I visit this particular video I replay it more than I can count while I do other stuff online. I'm a late 80's child and this stuff appeals! :)

  • brilliant and original - feels like it was yesterday

  • This is the original which was really rockin in the 70s! but I prefer the petra and kiss versions over this

  • These guys are good musicians. "Like" and added to playlists.

  • Lead singer looks like my Dad's russian mistress

  • he,s singing all wrong but i like it

  • good, but i liked the KISS version more

  • I think people need to do their homework before they start talking bad.... about anyone!

  • i recall gene simmons in one of his reality shows mentioning when he 'wrote' this song...he is full of shit

  • This is the original, by argent...at least as far as who wrote the song.

  • Petra did the best version of this song!!!

  • @rockett72 Petra changed the words of the song. they were on TBN this past weekend, and were talking about how they aske permission to do so.

  • oasis

  • Argent kicks KISS's ass every time!

  • the original sounds great..havent heard this in years

  • I'm glad I live in a country that doesn't block this awesome video.

  • Sheer class, thanks for posting.

  • This song is epic even this cover, even if i take my guitar and start to playing it, the song would sound geourgeous even played by my... Sorry if my english is bad im from south america!

  • this is the definition of hippy

  • why does kiss' cover have 3.3 million views and this only 150k, makes no sense

  • @cheeseppuff Because the Gene Simmons gang are big badass media manipulators whereas Russ just writes excellent songs. I got Imdb to remove a credit for Gene Simmons as the writer of this song !! He only tweaked the lyrics to make it American . Life , labour , neighbour. snalis trees and Cliff Richard were all taken out and replaced with Hot guitar etc. This changed the sense of the song entirely. The Kiss version was an affirmation of the rock life style : The original was less so .

  • Love the orignal

  • People are too quick to use the term 'epic', lately...but this is fucking epic!

  • legendary!!

  • the bass player is COOL

  • Personally I liked rod argent better in the zombies but hey this is still an amazing song

  • Good Lord, I remember this on the Whistle Test. Blew me away. What a fantastic song. It's like a fundie preacher goin' at it. God gave rock and roll to YOU!

  • petra, argent,kiss...song is awsume! just dont want it in the hands of a dj sampling it or hip hop horray crap.

  • @barbarian189

God help us if we ever listen this awesome song in damn music of hip hop, reggeaton or some other retarded music of this days.

  • This version is THE BEST. not the Kiss version. This is Old school... Kiss isn't so much.

  • This song makes me happy. There just isn't much music like this anymore.

  • Great upload.

I didn't know Argent did this tune..It's not often I come across something new from yesteryear.

    Cheers.

  • I prefer the KISS version, because it was a bit of a tribute to Eric Carr, who couldn't record on it because he was far too sick. He eventually passed away. RIP, Eric.

  • @cenation2810 then how is he in the music video?

  • @beatlesbiggestfan100 He was in surgery during the recording, and was out of hopsital when it came to the music video. He was actually wearing a wig in it, because he had Chemotherapy done to him.

  • Petra wrote it in 1972...recorded it in 1977 and again in 1984 then Kiss did it in 1990.

  • @JustMeNotU100 Russ Ballard (the guitarist here) actually wrote it in 72, Argent did the original, Petra and KISS covered the song later.

  • @eruptionmat Thanks for the correction.

  • @JustMeNotU100 I'm a Petra fan, buddy, but Petra recorded Argent's song with permission to change the words. I have just seen the recent Petra Doc and Bob Hartman says this himself. I do like Petra's version best though:) However this version is cute with the Cliff Richard line:)

  • @LeahRobb Thanks for the info (and the correction)!

  • 3:17 is so sublime.

  • We have been given a gift, we have been given a role And that role`s name is TROLLING!!!!!

  • A 22 reggaetoneros batracios no les gusta este video!!! VIVA EL ROOOOCKKKK!!!!

  • I'm a huge fan of the version of this song featuring Steve Vai. I'm glad I got to hear the original. It puts things into perspective. I appreciate G.G.RnR.t.Y even more now. Even though I wasn't alive when it was written, I like :)

  • I actually quite like this version, but not quite as much as KISS.

  • interesting to hear this version since made kiss this song famous Its pretty good but I prefer Kiss they are pretty different

  • Bill and Ted did GGR&R toYa in 'Bogus Journey.

"God Gave Rock and Roll to You" is a 1973 released song by British band Argent. It was recorded in 1971 during the sessions for their album All Together Now, but originally did not appear as an album track until 1973's In Deep, and was released as a successful single at that time. [wiki]

  • Great lyric...Love Cliff Richard but Please Don't Tease.

  • nothing wrong with this...

  • This song is original of Argent, they performed and recorded in 1973. Petra made a cover of this song in 1977

  • Great band. Great song. Pity they're miming. The Old Grey Whistle test was quite often as fraudulent as TOTP.. The only difference being, bands would record new versions of their songs for the Whistle Test then mime to them. Whereas, on TOTP, bands usually mimed to their records. At the end of the day, it's all miming.

  • @wezcoastcustom No this is the original. Since you obviously don't know what you are talking about I suggest you keep quiet.

  • @STataw i had this on my car's 8 track in the early 70s; it's the original long before KISS used it for the Bil & Ted movie (which i thought they did a good cover of incidentally).

  • @STataw Station.

  • @wezcoastcustom Do your homework before you DECLARE 'facts' . This song was written by Russ Ballard and done FIRST by Argent. Then Petra and finally KISS (personally, my favorite version)

  • @wezcoastcustom Sorry, but Russ Ballard wrote this song. It is the original played, performed and recorded by Argent in the early 70's and I had the pleasure of listening to it in Rod Argents flat in Woodside Park, North London.

  • @wezcoastcustom this is the original version though I know that Petra and Kiss and even Spongebob had their success with this brilliant rock anthem.

  • @wezcoastcustom Man, search in wikipedia or something before start talking...

  • @wezcoastcustom And don't say that about Judge Ito.

  • @wezcoastcustom your ignorant attitude is disgusting. long live rock bro's

  • wikipedia:

"God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You II" is a song by the American hard rock band Kiss. It was first released as a single in 1991, [...] included on Kiss' 1992 album Revenge.

The song was a reworking of the ARGENT 1973 song "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" and is credited as being written by Russ Ballard, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Bob Ezrin.

It was the last Kiss song to feature long time drummer Eric Carr before his death in 1991.

  • @cgmae2

Original By Argent !!!! Still the BEST!

  • @wezcoastcustom these well-idiot!!!

  • @wezcoastcustom so petra was around in the early 70s?...learn to tell time, jackass

  • @fuckityouwin Kiss Re wrote it & they call it God Gave Rock n Roll to you 2

  • AMEN! OMG I saw The Zombies 2 yrs ago & they finished the show with some Argent songs - for a few minutes I actually wished I was my Mother's age. *lol*

  • does anyone know where i can find the sheet/tabs for this?

  • gotta love these heathen rock n roll bands. they sure do sing a lot about god.

  • 4:08 on just my favorite 70's Rock pose! A classic and positive song.

  • I think they were miming. It sounds suspiciously like the recorded version and the fade out at the end confirms this. I didn't realise they did this on OGWT but saw a clip of Patti Smith fromWhistle Test and she was miming as well.

  • @CraigG1960 Definitely a mime. You can see Russ waiting to hit the strings at the right second and Rod trying to do same on the keys. It was probably a BBC edict because the studio couldn't cope with a 'live' performance.

  • This is the greatest band in the world!!!!

  • I'm so mad kiss took this song over. I hate kiss

  • So fluid. So nice.

  • no!, god did give rock and roll to you, he really did! and here's the proof

  • There is no god but music is the thing I love. This song rocks! Mr. Stanley did it justice also.

  • pure bad-ass.

  • Death to hip-hop

  • one of the best ever

  • I swear this is a dry run for Spinal Tap. Nigel Tufnel is Ballard's twin!

  • thank you GOD for rock and roll !!!

  • Watchin in Japan.

  • muito bom!!!!!!

  • since god gave us rock n roll, satan must have given us the crappy music that comes out now

  • Kill him, this is the original I saw them perform this at Carnegie Hall back in the 70's . Nothing like the rock bands of this era they were the greatest .

  • 16 justin bieber fans found there way to this video link

  • WYLD STALLYNS!!!

  • @malibutaa PARTY ON DUDE

  • 16 worship the Antichrist

  • The KISS re-write has more relevant lyrics than stepping on snails, but all respect to this original. Sounds great. Glad KISS had the balls to do the acapella harmony. It makes the song for both versions.

  • Mmm Did'nt think you could get away wth mimeing on the OGWT !!

  • THE ORIGINAL AND GREATEST VERSION

    GOD GAVE ARGENT TO EVERYONE!!!

  • Yea we wereat the Robin they were absolutely brilliant!!!

  • Russ Ballard wrote this...Kiss covered it...They were amazing at the Robin on Tuesday night...they really must do more gigs! If anyone has video please post it..I forgot to change camera batteries

  • @uanad80 The Christian rock band Petra covered this song twice (you can find them on Youtube). The albums this song appears on are Come and Join Us and Beat the System.

  • just back from gig the guys still have it russ looks 30brilliant t gig

  • GOING TO SEE THIS BAND TONIGHT CANT WAIT

  • Saw them the other night in Southampton - original line up - Ballard looks like he's 30 not 65 . Talent oozes from these guys - no egos either - thanks for a great night.

  • this is a cover of kiss? or kiss covered this?

  • @JRJCI Kiss covered/rewrote this in 1992 for the film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey :)

  • god gave us brits who conguered the world of music once in the 60's then the 70's and again in the 80's. Just ask again and we will try to do it again without autotune

  • @371gm brits were best in 60s and someways in 70s not quite 80s imo

  • I first heard Petra do this song in the 80's and loved it. At least christianity had one redeeming quality....

  • Kiss covered this??Hahah.,this was before that time 70-72..How hot is this..beautiful memories~~

  • wow i always thuoght kiss wrote this song. well gollie suprise suprise suprise.

  • Wow i also thought this was by kiss. This original is So much better! in my opinion haha. Wow the guitar, bass, keyboard, drums all so talented.

  • These guys are quintessetial rock at it's very best!

  • I first heard this on my car radio, made me want to cry. Those were the days.

  • I first heard this song as a cover by KISS on Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. When I heard the original, my mind was blown. Thanks for uploading this! :-D
