  • exactly igo (wei-chi) is originated in ancient china.

but modern igo has developed in japan. then spread over other countries again.

  • This game originated in China.. I'm a Korean... Chinese, Korean and Japanese are playing this great game. I think this game is better than Chess. Good video.. Thanks

  • fun game hard to learn

  • @zerox227x fun game. easy to learn. an odyssey to get anywhere towards getting any good at it at all

  • -200 to 200 Go is from China

    600 to 1980 Japan as No1.

1990 to now Korea as No1.

  • @kuni90210

wrong, 1600 to 1980 Japan was No1, before 1600 Japan Go has very very little history & culture compare to China's Weiqi.

  • Waite,I think Go is from China, because it is our traditon. So please check if you don't know.

  • Are you talking about the greatest today or of all time? Because, I believe the greatest of all time are Honninbo Shuusaku and Go Seigen. Unless I'm wrong, that is.

  • whats the song called?

  • kill bill sound

  • The Lonely Shepherd - Gheorghe Zamfir

  • Wei Qi Go is Chinese Game ! not japanese !

japanese learned from Chinese ! Please Respect our Chinese Game ! Japan also have good players . but it is Chinese Game ! Period !

  • japan ftw

  • @candyshopfr50 best players are chinese and korean. :-)

  • Yes, a lot of players think it's a japanese game because of the anime hikaru no go. But if they, like myself, actually play the game they would know it's a chinese game and should respect it. Good comment.

    Regards from sweden :)

  • Confucian analects(论语) had recorded the game of Weichi(围棋,which was called Yi(弈) in Ancient Chinese). But Confucius despise this game.Confucius borned in BC 551,and Japan Founded in about AD 1st.

  • It is called "weichi"(围棋) in moden Chinese, but It was called "yi"(弈) in the history of China.

It originated in China. And it has a story of "尧造围棋以教子丹朱".Mains:Prehistoric Chinese tribe leader yao made it to guid his bad son

  • WEIQI is china's

    not japanese。

  • Iit's not Japanese it's Chinese...Japanese add on that all and still its a game that enjoyed by all........

    -StoicOne!

  • Some people have the concept that the Japanese perfected the game but that is not true, they simply made more popular. Nowadays the Japanese pros are trailing behind the Chinese and Korean which is a shame.

  • Yeah, it's the oldest game. They say it dates back from over 3000 to 10,000 years. It's really amazing that someone would think of making a game that long ago...

  • El Cercado (Weiki, Baduk, Igo o Go) no es un juego japonés. Es un juego inventado por los chinos hace como cuatro mil años.

  • Well the chineee invented it, but the Japanese perfected it

  • The song is called:

The Lonely Shepard - Gheorghe Zamfir

He uses a traditional romanian instrument called "nai"; I believe in english they call it pan flute.

  • "nai" is also a traditional Hungarian instrument... "pán síp"

  • haha a turkish friend of mine told me before the nai is a traditional turkish instrument.

  • Goだけだと検索しにくいからIgoに統一するといいのに。。

    中国語の方もWeiqiなのかWeichiなのかどちらかを主たる呼称にするが良かろう。。。ドド~~~~~ン!

  • The game is Chinese dammit! But, the greatest player ever in Go, Honinbo Shusaku, was Japanese

  • 吴清源is the best!

  • Arguably the best. You can't brand a dead guy as the best, or anyone the best.

  • what is the name of the song ?

  • en . wikipedia . org /wiki/Go_%28board_game%29

There you go, Go came from china. ;)

  • This game Igo is Japanese. just show me Chinese old pics if you can. show me sitting straight if you can.

  • You can go to japanese 正仓院museum to look that WeiQi board which Tang emperor granted to Japanese emperor as a gift. WeiQi was introduced into japan by 迁唐使

  • its actually the chinese game of go.. no?

  • Beautiful! Thank you for posting. Please stop with the Japanese, Chinese, Korean disputes! Weichi is Chinese game. As in many things from China they went to Japan. Chinese version of go is slightly different... in other words, the game was 'Japanized' and 'Koreanized' a thousand years ago. Not mass marketed. No big deal. Love the game!

  • I so like this game! i think even beginners can feel the invisible potent power of this amazing game!

  • I play go...i have been playing for four years ever since shonen jump premiered hikaru no go. I think go is the ultimate game and go should be played alot!I love go...

  • The Japanese didn't learn "how to eat" from the Chinese. What a stupid thing to say! THey incorporated the eating utensils from the Chinese. The Japanese already knew how to eat!!!!

  • Go/Weiqui is the game of games.

  • I can't get over how misinformed people are these days when it comes to something like a board game. GO is what the western world calls it. The Japanese call it igo, the Chinese call is Weiqi, and the Koreans call it Baduk.

  • Go is Chinese not Japanese, just because the Japanese mass marketed it doesn't make it a Japanese game. You might as well claimed that because baseball is popular in Japan therefore baseball is a Japanese invented game.

  • this game is chinese.

  • this game is japanese.

  • this game is chinese, japanese learnt it from chinese like they learn how to write and how to eat.

  • right 007

  • Hey Jeff you should inform yourself before speaking. To start with, some big companies are spending money right now on this game. Just to site one, Microsoft. Secondly this game is far more complex than chess so you'll have to wait some more time before a pro is beaten. Algorithms behind chess AI are very simple, they use mainly a brute force aproach that just fails with go.

    Have a nice day

  • THIS GAME IS CHINESE. NOT JAPANESE.

  • Right. BADUK is made from CHINESE.

  • It's actually both since the game enjoys equal popularity in either country(this is my speculation) for centuries. And if you don't mind me asking, wtf is up with the crappy Zamphir music?

  • Computers have not yet "cracked it" because IBM and other companies didn't spend decades and millions of dollars in trying to be the first corporation to beat the world's Go champion. They went after chess instead. That novelty has now worn off, and I doubt you'll ever see another giant company spending that kind of money and time on Go research.

  • Actually, it's probably impossible for a computer to beat the World's Go Champion. It's not like chess, there are too many moves to calculate.

  • This game is really really fun! Amazing it's still here and as a known game from only royalties to common man. Very very nice video with a good choice of music

  • Go is an ancient game that is both strategic and poetic. It is a visual wonderworld; invulnerable fortresses are "living eyes" but you must venture forth to gain ground. It is filled with bluff and gambit, and ranks in global civilization with Chess and Bridge. Computers have not yet cracked it.

  • It looks very much like Othello or Pente, but the object is to surround the most "territory" with one's pieces (one has black, the other white). When the stones "meet" each other on the board, they fight to control the nearby territory. Sometimes they die. Whoever controls the most territory at the end, wins.

  • im not familiar with this game but is it like othello?

  • Some Go players would burn you at the stake for such a question. By the way, the answer is, in many, many ways, no.

  • It's very nice, thanks for putting it up. Hard to not think of Kill Bill when I'm watching it! Is it from some book on Shusai, or where does the collection come from? Excellent slideshow.

  • All pictures are from "Japanese game of GO" book.

  • Yeah, Go origin is chinese. But Japan rose Go to the category of art and made it worldwide known.

  • Japanese mass-produced and marketed it first.

  • Go is not Japanese! its originated in China and we Koreans own in that game. for 16 years we were the best and still are. sorry, dont mean to be one of those people that go "i am korean not chinese! cant you tell by my eyes! try to understand my ching chong language" (say in asian accent)

  • Maybe the "Go" of which you think originated in China, but this "Go" is of Japanese origin. Clearly all pictures depict Japanese people, Japanese places, and Japanese artwork.

  • Sure. Japanese playing the game 'go' which originated in China centuries before as 'wei chi' and adopted by the Japanese. It is the same game. The game then flowered in Japan just as it was sadly simultaneously repressed in China under the communist Cultural Revolution.

  • Baseball originated in America and is an American game. Baseball played in Japan is still an American game. Soccer played in America is a European game. The Olympics to be held in Beijing are Greek in origin. And...Wei Chi(go) is a Chinese game adopted first by Korea and Japan and now, wonderfully, by the rest of the world.

  • Ah, just watched Hikaru No go! Ah, GOD I love this <3 I wanna Play too <3
