Fantastic from Start to End, Greville may have been a somewhat creepy, mysterious and seemingly silly aristocrat who latched on to the wonderful mary, but to me he Possessed some very deep wisdom and maybe in his odd way wanted to warn her of the dangers facing a young woman in the world of the late 1950s & onwards!
I get so excited whenever I hear about a new Stephen Poliakoff production. It's been a while, eh? Bloody shame we don't get to see all of them here in the colonies. The last one that appeared in DVD here was Gideon's Daughter (magnificient!)
greville s sinister revelations made Mary reject him because of his malevolent powers. Mary s status as a Northern~ lass~ done~ good journalist wains into desertion of her London role as the messenger of a class obsessed 50 s high society.
I find it interesting that in one production which Ruth is famous for (Jane Eyre) she stars along with Toby Stephens, and in this one with his his legendary mother Dame Maggie Smith!
Being here in the States I don't see this. I read the reviews but seeing is believing. Comedians, I think are the best for such roles case inpoint Robin Williams in Insomnia. Wow!
It's about a very talented young woman who meets the mysterious and charismatic Greville - being young and naive, she falls for him but he doesn't exactly turn out to be her knight in shining armour.
The 1920s and the 1960s, of course, both regarded as decadent times but one of the achievements of this drama is to show that the 1950s, in some parts of society, had excitement and magic as well.
A superb drama. The perfectly nuanced horror (and magic) of it reminded me of the classic Henry James tale 'The turn of the screw'. Ruth Wilson was totally magnificent as a 1950s debutante attending a 1920s themed party. As the tale moves into the 1960s, Ruth changes clothes but not attitude (whereas Walliams' character remains totally unchanged).
I'm gonna find it incredibly difficult to take David Walliams seriously :D although he is an amazing actor

Makes me laugh that Maggie Smith (older Mary) is Toby Stephen's mum, who played Mr Rochester to Ruth Wilson (younger Mary)'s Jane Eyre.

she looks soo nice in this ..
very different from in jane eyre
which prooves she is obviously very pretty as everyone said she wasn't pretty in jane eyre
but i love her tension with toby stephens yummy man
Pixiemelodramatic 2 years ago 15
I could see her good looks in Jane Eyre, people equate beaty wth make up and photo shop. countenance is much more important and she is very exotic.

I think we Americans are getting royally fucked out of all the fantastic productions the BBC offers :(. Even BBC-A is really lagging.
