  • can't black place a black stone in the middle of the white areas? I've always been confused with liberties...

  • for every match you lose, even if it is always random opponents, is it true you get much better especially playing with no handicaps? i was playing someone and i have been playing for about 6 months and he was playing for 2 years and he beat me and said that i played well, is it true that when you play tough opponents with no handicaps u get better faster?

  • Just play on yahoo to learn the game is not necessarily over at the point stated in this video. Well, the game of go might be over, but a number of players (too many) keep filling in spaces with the end of jacking up (manipulating) their rating level.

  • For some reason I have a craving for Mentos

  • i love go. i can always beat my friends, but went to a tournament at a mall about a year ago and couldnt compete. havent played much latley, but still love it.

  • helped me, thanks!

  • Thanks very much! This really helped me understand the rules!

  • Thank you very much! This really helped me understand the rules.

  • wow dude this video really helped me out. ive been reading a manga called 'hikaru no go' lately and ive been dying to try this game out. but yeah this vid has helped a lot more than any online instruction manual. so bravo. this vid is an insta fav

  • Thanks

  • try searching "yukari sensei go go igo"

    on youtube

its a little segment that explains the game

after each episode of hikaru no go (the anime)

  • @righteous0warrior but there are still many more rules to cover.i like this video though

  • @hitmankiddo Oh no doubt. I am not saying this vid is going to turn you into a Go sage or anything. But it really helps giving the noobs (like I was when I wrote that message) some firm rules to stand on.

Like I said, you won't become a 9 dan or anything watching this, but if you are not familiar with the rules, then this vid is a MUST on the list of Go related things to watch.

  • @righteous0warrior i know what you mean but im just saying this in case they really think these are the only rules,No offence.

  • Och well ... decided to type in "weiqi" in the YT search box and click on the first video...

Didn't expect that it would be painful for me to watch this. I played Go on KGS and after a while you become addicted to it and it really starts to hurt your mind. I don't know why but this game has a kind of "dark element" in it... . I'm glad that I don't play it anymore. It looks so harmless but in my opinion it is an emotional torture instrument.

  • Torture? Why? ...well, sometimes you may get mad when you lose, mad about your mistakes or bad moves, or feel like your opponent looks down on your moves (mostly when you play online), and so on. But Go is a game that you can enjoy trying to find the best move each time to win. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, that's just the part of the game.

  • In Go your state of mind will inevitably be "imprinted" on the board during a game. You may say this is the same with every game but i strongly disagree. Go is so much more complicated than for example chess and the patterns formed by the stones are so compelling that it's like opening your mind to the other player. And if both players have the intention to "crush" eath other, it doesn't matter if you lost or won afterwards. You are still feeling empty afterwards...

  • ... like you used the game instead of playing it. So you play more and more and more. Always looking for something. And afterwards it feels so disgusting. Perhaps it's not even this game but the social environment of these online servers; I don't know. But Go's strong connection to the human psyche ( -- well, after playing it, i believe there is one -- ) makes it worse.

  • Sounds like it's a matter of how you soak it up, and a matter of how you control your mind. Some says playing Go is like fighting against yourself more than fighting against your opponent.

  • True. I've realized that recently. Trevanian once said, «Go is to Chess what philosophy is to double-entry accounting.»

Chess relies mostly on deep analysis of possible moves - in a linear manner - for good play, whereas Go depends on a sense of balance between two extremes in addition to deep analysis of possible moves.

Go and Chess are like two different people with the same soul. They look different and act different, but have the same "mind" ( abstract concepts).

  • I understand your feelings on this one. Being unable to read your opponent's moves - while your opponent reads you like a book - does feel like accidentally divulging a dirty secret. However, this goes away with time. Chances are the opponent gave away more than he intended `-^

And don't worry about the majority of guys on the online Go servers. They may brag like donkeys - until they meet a real professional Go player. These are stronger than most players care to realize.

  • Unlike Chess - which has several rules and a limited number of pieces - the rules of Go can be counted on one hand and there is an (practically) unlimited number of pieces to play with.

The paucity of rules in Go makes it a very fluid game, with room for individual playing styles - much like association football. (Most AF rules apply to match regulations rather than method of play. You can play as you like, so long as you don't hurt anybody or insult the referee.)

  • To "crush the opponent" is what one does in Chess. In Go, one has to take as much as possible - and know where to draw the line. Go (nor Chess) is a game for those lacking self-restraint.

The number of rules in Chess limits the number of possible moves - enough that a supercomputer can calculate and choose the correct move within minutes. Go, with its minimal set of rules, allows for a greater variety of possible moves.

  • Well, some people do say «Baduk sucks your life away». And in a sense that is true.

Weiqi is a game that forces you to open up your mind more and more, in pursuit of understanding your opponent as thoroughly as possible and so eventually go from ignorance to enlightenment. This is why, while a sense of ambition is desirable, an attitude of greed only leads to ruin. Perhaps this is the «dark element» that you refer to.

  • thank you very useful to the beginners!!!!

  • hmm... im not sure if many people know about this game in australia... but i for one love it! i have to say I'm not the best, but i have won a couple. Go is great :D

  • I'm a beginner and this video helped a lot. Thanks for making it.

  • I love the sound of these stones... but I don't like the japanese or korean shape. I love Yunzi stones, even though the noise is less beautifull.

  • Hey good job :) More people need to know about Go!

I'm pretty new myself, but I think it's a great game!

  • This was a great overview! Go is such an amazing game. It really is a pity that it is not well-known in the states. Well, thanks for this! It was interesting and made for a great review!
