if you can not get any ideas for a book, look at a interesting picture or image, and try to come up with a story for it. For example, a picture is taken of two girls in a dark house. Well, it can be about a killer who's after them and the girls are scared to death and then you can make one of them die. it works pretty good with me, but I am not interested in writing horror books though. You can also think of any number of random things and make a story out of those things.
You are totally write. People (like me) will find that they will write these books and find out they won't work. I learned in the past that if your heart is not into the book then you won't be able to write a book. It's like a jury. If you have any reasonable doubt then then that accused is innocent until proven guilty. If you have any doubt in a book then you will stop writing it. Thanks for inspiration.
Great video, I'm currently writing my book and have about 30 thousand words, it does take a long time but we must keep at it or else no one will hear our story. I encourage does who feeling like giving up, this was confirmation to continue writing your book; don't stop! Good luck to all.
I'm 12! :D and I wrote 97 pages of pain, demons, plot, gore, mysteries, sadness, ghosts, revange and suffering. I have a lot of characters like: Christopher, Francis Young, Sebastian Rossman, Nathalia, Ashe, Seichi Kurushimi (the fallen charmer), Jack the ripper, The Madman, Chisan Yume, Mao Tesano, Jessica Rossman, Alice, Older Brother, Eliotte, Mr. Mayton, Daneta Karenly, and Caroline. I like my book and hope to publish it one day. Thank you for this video
I bought yer book! :) I'll have to read it soon :) GNOMES!!! :D Do you put anything about God in yer books? I mostly do read Christian books, but I'll read it! :)

@marstimedot I believe editing comes after you've written everything down, because if you keep going back to what you've written before it's finished, it's never going to get finished. You'll always find something wrong with it.
When I saw this video, Kaleb, late at night for the very first time, I realized something that is the most important thing I've ever realized. I realized who I am. The video finished and I realized I was crying, I don't know why.
I know I am meant to be a writer, thanks to you, Kaleb.
That is EXACTLY what I was thinking! OMG! As I'm listening to this, I realize that most of what he's saying is so true and is EXACTLY how I am! I have a passion for writing, that's all I ever do!

I'm actually planning on being an author!!!! One idea, The Grave-Stone saga, I came up with in kindergarten. It has taken me 7 straight years to finally come up with a good solid storyline that me and everyone else likes. So if anyone wants to be an author, believe me it might not always be easy.
"one of the questions I probably get asked most often is 'how do i write a book"...sounds helpful..."thats pretty much an impossible question to answer"...never mind...
Hi Kaleb Nation! I'm writing a book to. And everything you say, you are right. I am 12 and just like SuperEmil97 said "I'm not wirting for money i just want to give people a new story. My book is called: The Sunrise Saga: Sunrise. You people might think i am copying Twilight but my book is going to be way different. I haven't started it yet. But i know what my book is going to be about and when i get my notebook i am going to start on it.I hope to have it published in 2011 November.

Wow.This just sent chills down my spine. So true, so incredible, so inspiring.
I want to write a novel so badly.I have this idea and...I don't want to give it up like I gave up my old stories. I feel some attachment to it that i've never felt before.

I love, love, LOVE writing, and I've wanted to write a book, since...forever...but I'm no good at thinking of things to actually write a whole story about. I have many failed attempts in my notebook, anywhere from sci-fi to romance, but I can't get passed but three pages. But at school, with reports and short stories and whatnot where the teacher ASSIGNS a topic, I can REALLY dive into it. But I'm no good at ideas on my own! And a lot of people think ideas the easy part...
@llamasATwalmart Hi I'm writing a book at the moment and although I HATE English lessons at school, I love coming home and writing my book. My book is a fantasy and the reason I'm writing it is because I love fantasy books in particular those from J R R Tolkien who is my idol so my advice is choose a book you love and write your own in the same theme (but not copying it of course) and you should find it easy to come up with ideas. Good Luck
@Shackerrrz Great advice; really. It's appreciated:) I love fantasy, too. It's hard to pick a book from a favorite genre that you really like without copying it, though. That so awesome that you've found an idea that you can elaborate into a book. I just hope something will eventually come to me!
I didn't see myself becoming a writer, I was a footballer, a great one with a bright future. Until one match, on a dull sunday morning in the mist and rain, an injury changed everything.
I discovered my jotters a month after, this was five years ago, and since I have been discovering the world I had the idea for. Now, the first book is complete and I'm on my way to publishing it.
I have an agent, a respected one, and a publisher, I'm nearly there.
@MrChaingunCheney - Orion and the Sword of Light. Originally "Sword of Kings" but after it was stolen by a temp at my former agent, I had to change the name. All copyrighted of course, to avoid any further problems.
Wow, I can't even begin to tell you how inspiring you are. This video pretty much sums up my life. I'm 21 and have completed four novels but I just can't find an agent because they all say I'm too young. Sometimes I do feel like giving up; going to uni or getting a proper job but your videos motivate me to keep going. thank you :P
My 8yr Gabriela make story and right them..In school the teacher take her to other grades so she can read her story to other class rooms other grades..I'm so proud of her..she wants to be a writer when she grow up..I will show her this video..so she can have and idea but I guess she already has it..God bless my little writer..
I love to write and I dream and hope almost every day to get published and get my story out to the world. Whenever I don't want to write, or want to write but have trouble getting concentrated I flip this video on and I'm instantly inspired to write.
some retarded bitches disliked this video 'cuz they wanted to learn to write a book. Kay, bitches, this is what you have to do: go to school, study grammar and literacy at best, research books and how authors got so successful. Finally, decide ideas, decide something interesting and research how the genre of your book is gunna be and what characteristics to use.
Remember, kids: write what your heart wants you to write, trying to write a book people will like will make your book lose that spark
I have such good ideas I've lierally fallen in love with, but I'm not a good writer at all. It's so frusterating when I have this scene playing in my head and when I sit at my computer to write I go blank.
I sometimes debate on giving my ideas to my friend whos an amazing writer, but every time I prepare my email to send her I stop. I cancel it or exit it and think why don't I just send it.
The truth is I love my ideas and I still hold hope one day I'll actually write it all down.
@UcciTV I think i can help u out with that. I just started writing a month ago and I'm almost done with it. It'll be a great book for me. Go to the computer and just think of something and when u think of it just right away put it down somewhere. That's what had happened to me. But i got it out right away and typed it onto the computer. Then i just come up of whats going to happen.
This video is such a beutiful piece. It not only applies to writing, it applies to so many things. I'm a filmmaker and I got the chills when I watched this. Especially the part where he mentions the creation of a concept; revising and changing to the point of giving up and finding something new thats temprorarily interesting. "But some people press on through the hard times, they keept it up until they reach the end and write that last word. Those are the people who become authors" inspirational
oh hey look its me! lol oh wait, my attention span can't get me to write from 5pm to 2am. but damn my book would get finished so much faster that way.. lol. Gonna watch this tomorrow so i get inspired.
This is probably my most favorite video ever! I'm at that point in the writing process where discouragement is high and it's easier to talk myself out of doing it. I keep pressing forward, that's what I do, but your video gives added strength I appreciate. Thank you for creating such an inspiring video for aspiring authors. <3
The first draft of my first novel originated in 2002, when I was 7, and in 2010 I finished the first installment in the series. I, totally, agree with everything you said!
I'm almost done rereading The Farfield Curse, and it reminded me of how inspirational your videos back when you were in Texas were to me, writing wise. It's just as inspirational reading The Specter Key, because of this video and inspired I am to continue my work with literature. Thank you.
By the way, everytime I read Bran Hambric, I imagine it exactly like a film. I haven't imagined any book like that before. That tell you something? ;)
This sounds a awful lot like my E-R-th Chronicles, that I have been writing seance 6th grade. 9 books later, and I'm only now on the third actual novel form of the book. Instead of them being Comic Book, or hand written.
I watch this every time I don't feel like writing, and just want to laze about doing meaningless stuff. As soon as the video is finished, I remember why I love writing so much. Thank you for being an inspiration, Kaleb. <3
@MsBERDie I know this is a late reply but just like you watch this video for inspiration, I make trailers for my book to get me motivated again. My ideas begin as a single image like what Kaleb says started his book, so I always start the trailer with the image as I saw it. Making it also gives me more ideas :P
Kaleb you are so inspiring! So funny I was just asking myself that queston the other day what When you write or read a book what draws you the most to it and why. It it the over all story, theme, characters, love, action, plot, or genre? This video is amazing! I am reading amost done reading the first Bran right now and it is amazing! Very cool you got ot live yor dream I hope to live mine someday as well!
great vid..all that you said is 100% true...I've only written one story to the end..but I lost the first part..and I was so upset that I just quit the story and gave up..I've tried to get into writing but I usually end up writing a few paragraphs then giving up..I guess I'm waiting for that one story that I just have to finish from being to end.
annnd it did work. on your site you said that you can call in for a signed book at changing hands, well you can also add it into the comments section if you order it from their site online. I just got an email confirming that they will ask for it to be signed.
kaleb, you are such a good writer and i think you should keep on going after bran hambic. you inspire me nd many other people. and i remember that wen i got the farfeild curse book you wrote yur ideas on a plastic bagg lmao that just shows how determined you are lol
P.S.-----------I CANT WAIT FOR THE SPECTER KEY!!!!!!-------------
Thank-god, you make me sound less of a nutter when I think about how I started writing my novel and never actually thought about getting it published. I guess I just really love my characters :)
This made me cry. This perfectly explains my experience as an aspiring writer and it means a lot to see another person's passion for it. Thank you, Kaleb. You're a true inspiration.
I've been writing one book (actually, it's not a book, books are published. It's a story right now) for six years. It started out horribly (I was only eight), and I wanted to give up hundreds of times, but I haven't, and now I feel it's quite good. This is the best video on how to write a book. All the others are cheesy and fake, but this one actually gives me chills, hope, and inspiration to keep writing.
Been writing on several ideas since I was 16, but only recently have I actually planned anything at all, and I must say I feel about writing just about the same way you do. Great video.
Love this video, Kaleb :) It hits right at home, and I had one of my stories in mind the whole time you were describing the feeling, and it really makes me feel inspired to keep pushing on until it's finished. =]
Perhaps the most truest video about writing I have ever seen on youtube to date. I too have that dream of being a writer and its true that ideas fall from the waste side often for me, but some actually get type onto my laptop. For example, I have over three thousand words typed about this high fantasy novel of mine. My advice for anyone who wants to be a writer just write for the fun of it and not to be rich and famous. That is true author.
i ordered a signed copy, but since i have a slight phobia of phones, i wrote in the comments section of my order about getting a signed copy. i am crossing my fingers that it works! *eek*
Wow. This Vlog was absolutely amazing. I think you should base a lot of your videos like this.
I can't say whether...The music in the background, the changing views, lot of closeups. Or if it was just the True Facts. The random thoughts. You think about it. How will I write this book? Then you pretty much give an explanation, but not necessarily. :]
I really really like this & I will be using these tips in the future! :]
My name is Aaron Rosales I'm 13 years old and I'm thinking of making my own saga called The Bearington Chronicles I'm thinking of so many great ideas for it I hope it all goes well and that I am capable of not giving up and reaching my goal of finishing it.
I'm in the process of brainstorming my idea for a book or with any luck a trilogy of books. I love falling asleep to scenes running through my head like a movie. Or researching with a notebook in hand learning useless facts or meanings of names.
I have a lot orphaned stories and suffer from what I've dubbed Writer's Attention Deficit Disorder or WADD. I'm writing this because you doing this has inspired me more then I can say. I faved this to look back upon during those hard times writing
THE STORY IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS THE CHARACTER. NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE IDEA IS, IT'S NOTHING IF THE CHARACTERS AREN'T INTERESTING.

And a lot of people think ideas the easy part...
llamasATwalmart 10 months ago
@llamasATwalmart Hi I'm writing a book at the moment and although I HATE English lessons at school, I love coming home and writing my book. My book is a fantasy and the reason I'm writing it is because I love fantasy books in particular those from J R R Tolkien who is my idol so my advice is choose a book you love and write your own in the same theme (but not copying it of course) and you should find it easy to come up with ideas. Good Luck
Shackerrrz 10 months ago
@Shackerrrz Great advice; really. It's appreciated:) I love fantasy, too. It's hard to pick a book from a favorite genre that you really like without copying it, though. That so awesome that you've found an idea that you can elaborate into a book. I just hope something will eventually come to me!

Brilliant, Kaleb.

It's not out yet, by the way, June 19, 2012.

Wow, I can't even begin to tell you how inspiring you are. This video pretty much sums up my life. I'm 21 and have completed four novels but I just can't find an agent because they all say I'm too young. Sometimes I do feel like giving up; going to uni or getting a proper job but your videos motivate me to keep going. thank you :P

some retarded bitches disliked this video 'cuz they wanted to learn to write a book.

UcciTV 1 year ago

Kaleb,
I'm almost done rereading The Farfield Curse, and it reminded me of how inspirational your videos back when you were in Texas were to me, writing wise. It's just as inspirational reading The Specter Key, because of this video and inspired I am to continue my work with literature. Thank you.
By the way, everytime I read Bran Hambric, I imagine it exactly like a film. I haven't imagined any book like that before. That tell you something? ;)

great vid..all that you said is 100% true...I've only written one story to the end..but I lost the first part..and I was so upset that I just quit the story and gave up..I've tried to get into writing but I usually end up writing a few paragraphs then giving up..I guess I'm waiting for that one story that I just have to finish from being to end.
