  • THE STORY IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS THE CHARACTER. NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE IDEA IS, IT'S NOTHING IF THE CHARACTERS AREN'T INTERESTING.

  • I want more inspiring writing videos like this, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight now.

  • :O

  • Hey, I want to know how to get one published

  • ... i think i just fell in love with you <3

  • if you can not get any ideas for a book, look at a interesting picture or image, and try to come up with a story for it. For example, a picture is taken of two girls in a dark house. Well, it can be about a killer who's after them and the girls are scared to death and then you can make one of them die. it works pretty good with me, but I am not interested in writing horror books though. You can also think of any number of random things and make a story out of those things.

  • Now us Nationers can answer why we watch your videos.

  • This was so inspirational. You truly have a way with words. Thank you for all of your help. Keep writing.

  • You are totally write. People (like me) will find that they will write these books and find out they won't work. I learned in the past that if your heart is not into the book then you won't be able to write a book. It's like a jury. If you have any reasonable doubt then then that accused is innocent until proven guilty. If you have any doubt in a book then you will stop writing it. Thanks for inspiration.

  • This video is very inspirational, thanks for sharing. Could you please tell the name of the singer of this song, please. :D

  • @Pacerjames It's by Adrienne Frailey. Her links are in the info bar.

  • @kalebnation

Just purchased two of her songs, thanks man.

  • Can you tell me who sings the song? Thanks

  • Great video, I'm currently writing my book and have about 30 thousand words, it does take a long time but we must keep at it or else no one will hear our story. I encourage does who feeling like giving up, this was confirmation to continue writing your book; don't stop! Good luck to all.

  • I'm 12! :D and I wrote 97 pages of pain, demons, plot, gore, mysteries, sadness, ghosts, revange and suffering. I have a lot of characters like: Christopher, Francis Young, Sebastian Rossman, Nathalia, Ashe, Seichi Kurushimi (the fallen charmer), Jack the ripper, The Madman, Chisan Yume, Mao Tesano, Jessica Rossman, Alice, Older Brother, Eliotte, Mr. Mayton, Daneta Karenly, and Caroline. I like my book and hope to publish it one day. Thank you for this video

  • I bought yer book! :) I'll have to read it soon :) GNOMES!!! :D Do you put anything about God in yer books? I mostly do read Christian books, but I'll read it! :)

  • @iloveminem89 I can help you, if you like? I mostly write fiction fantasy so if you don't want that advice sorry for wasting your time. If you need tips, just gimme a tap.

  • @0justarandomguy0 you mean for inspiration? Or to listen to whilst writing?

  • I'm writing a fiction story based in Ancient Greece, you can read it at my deviantart page. I am pandatha!

  • OMG,now @kelab nation is going to be the next guy whom i am impressed by :)

    seriously dude,you rock!!!

  • Do you edit... as you write???

  • @marstimedot I believe editing comes after you've written everything down, because if you keep going back to what you've written before it's finished, it's never going to get finished. You'll always find something wrong with it.

  • What kind of music do you recommend I listen to?

  • This is such a great video I found it by accident and watched it some many times just because I love how you describe everything about writing.

  • Oh my goshh thank you so much. You have inspired to me to try and write my book again. I have ways been a great writer and I'm gonna try again

  • I've loved to write almost my whole life.

When I saw this video, Kaleb, late at night for the very first time, I realized something that is the most important thing I've ever realized. I realized who I am. The video finished and I realized I was crying, I don't know why.

I know I am meant to be a writer, thanks to you, Kaleb.

I discovered who I am, thanks to you, Kaleb.

  • I'm writing a boookkkk!!!!!! :)

  • 9 people are failed writers!

  • Wow big description!

  • This video inspired me to go buy the book. you are very inspiring. thank you.

Maybe I will be able to continue working on my own fantasy story.

  • i'm getting all kinds of inspiration from this. you really couldn't have put this any better :)

i deffinatley know the feeling, not just so much with writing but more often with drawing.

  • You just activated my creative gene! Thank you, thank you!

  • Beautiful.

  • That is EXACTLY what I was thinking! OMG! As I'm listening to this, I realize that most of what he's saying is so true and is EXACTLY how I am! I have a passion for writing, that's all I ever do!

  • @acdcboyful you don't have a problem... try becoming an author, then be famous and if ur books get filmed... you can sing dance and act in them as much as you want!

  • Beautfuly said

  • Good idea for a book : buckle that can take back in time with a magic power is lost, a man with a buckle and his friends go on a dangerous journey to find it before the bad guy in the book finds it ?????????

  • @TowerOfTerror99 seems like a good book, I would like to read it.

  • You should do move videos on writing. How you organize and stuff. I know it's kinda personal but I think it would be really awesome to watch (even tho I know you won't give all your secrets away ! hahaha)

  • My story orginated in 2002, when I was 7 or 8, but it wasn't until 2010 I finished a full draft but realized I loved the characters and ideas but I wasn't pleased with the storyline so now in 2011, I'm re-writing the first book, hoping, after all these years of failed attempts as the story took a bit longer to development, that this will be the draft that will become the real thing!

  • this is sooo true!!!

  • Very Inspirational!

  • i just like it .!

    thanks for these info's !!

  • Please help mee I can't find the book I am in Florida and I am making a book too I'm ten and a soon to be author please respond

  • noto be offensive but my idea on a book came to me in the shower

  • @mstheman10 my idea came to me watching the office. But it didn't have anything to do with it.

  • I believe that one day you will be as famous as J.K Rowling,I dont know you and I never will, but I do know, that you are amazing.I want to be a writer too :) what you say is so true...and you inspired me so thank you. :)

  • I want to write a book one based off the lord of the rings is that possible like i have already started it.

  • I know what you mean Kaleb i came up with these seven characters and i know how they're all going to die but i don't which ones i want to be girls and ones i want to be boys and i'm still contemplating the plot

  • I'm actually planning on being an author!!!! One idea, The Grave-Stone saga, I came up with in kindergarten. It has taken me 7 straight years to finally come up with a good solid storyline that me and everyone else likes. So if anyone wants to be an author, believe me it might not always be easy.

  • "one of the questions I probably get asked most often is 'how do i write a book"...sounds helpful..."thats pretty much an impossible question to answer"...never mind...

  • Hi Kaleb Nation! I'm writing a book to. And everything you say, you are right. I am 12 and just like SuperEmil97 said "I'm not wirting for money i just want to give people a new story. My book is called: The Sunrise Saga: Sunrise. You people might think i am copying Twilight but my book is going to be way different. I haven't started it yet. But i know what my book is going to be about and when i get my notebook i am going to start on it.I hope to have it published in 2011 November.

  • @edwardcullen2604 Hi im 14 years old and i know that you probably wanted Kaleb to reply to this comment but i just wanted to say that i feel the same way you feel and i want to give people a new story as well and im currently confused about what i want to write, i feel that i just need to find my inspiration. but i hope very much that your wonderful dreams to become an author come true. :)

  • @sweetty159 How abuot this just think and you will be great

  • @edwardcullen2604 Sorry, I doubt you'll get published (or finish your book) by November 2011. You should probably start writing while your idea is fresh in your mind. I've been writing since I was seven and I've still never finished anything, let alone trying to pblish it. I have a few stories that I'm close to finishing, but they're nowhere near close enough to be published yet. Now, I'm not trying to squash your dreams, I am telling you that it will take a while. Good luck and good writing:)

  • I have just started chapter 6 of my 33 chapter book, the first book that I have even started and the companions have reached the borders of Era issilia.... anyone interested yet :)

  • @Shackerrrz I am this mite bo gewd just make a youtube video about ur book and tell us ur characters and chapters nd more

  • I really, really want to become an author =)

  • After writing how long did it take you to get published?? And how did you go about doing it??

  • god i wish there was an english accent translation for these drony teenage yank voices.

  • What song is in the background? It's so dramatic. :) I love it!

  • You're living my dream m8 :) keep it up.

  • I had the idea of a fanfiction and it juts wouldn't go away so I was like "Fine! I will write it down then"

  • Wow.This just sent chills down my spine. So true, so incredible, so inspiring.

I want to write a novel so badly.I have this idea and...I don't want to give it up like I gave up my old stories. I feel some attachment to it that i've never felt before.

I know every twist in the plot like the back of my hand. But it's just so HARD to start the beginning, the dreary scenes, the complicated. I'm only thirteen. But then again, I realize that if i just write it out, i can fix it and it'll be amazing.

  • Hahaha, OMG!, who the fuck are the 7 people that deslike this?

  • When i get an idea of writting its doing class. So ihave to write doing class to get it all out and like you said it might be not the idea that is right but I keep going intill the idea that I get is right.. Evertime i think im alomst done i relise there is more to telll of this characters life. Then i relise this characters that i call sara is relly me, but in her world.i write. I dont know if im going all the way like you but i know it will be with me.

  • Dear Mr. Nation,

I love, love, LOVE writing, and I've wanted to write a book, since...forever...but I'm no good at thinking of things to actually write a whole story about. I have many failed attempts in my notebook, anywhere from sci-fi to romance, but I can't get passed but three pages. But at school, with reports and short stories and whatnot where the teacher ASSIGNS a topic, I can REALLY dive into it. But I'm no good at ideas on my own! And a lot of people think ideas the easy part...

  • @llamasATwalmart Hi I'm writing a book at the moment and although I HATE English lessons at school, I love coming home and writing my book. My book is a fantasy and the reason I'm writing it is because I love fantasy books in particular those from J R R Tolkien who is my idol so my advice is choose a book you love and write your own in the same theme (but not copying it of course) and you should find it easy to come up with ideas. Good Luck

  • @Shackerrrz Great advice; really. It's appreciated:) I love fantasy, too. It's hard to pick a book from a favorite genre that you really like without copying it, though. That so awesome that you've found an idea that you can elaborate into a book. I just hope something will eventually come to me!

  • they way you explain it makes me fall in love again!

  • :01 how indecent!!!

  • cool!

  • Comment removed

  • This was really good!

  • can you just write it on line paper and send it to the publishers?

  • it looks like you need to sleep

  • I have this video as a favorite and thumbs up!!!! :D

    Dear Mr. Nation,

    Thank you for inspiring me.

    This has been: 20 s t a r s * r i s i n g

    aka ℳℰℓssa

    ~ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ♥

  • I love it! And I think it's great that your doing what your passionate about! Most people aren't willing to take that risk!

  • Thank you for making this, Kaleb Nation.

  • Brilliant, Kaleb.

I didn't see myself becoming a writer, I was a footballer, a great one with a bright future. Until one match, on a dull sunday morning in the mist and rain, an injury changed everything.

I discovered my jotters a month after, this was five years ago, and since I have been discovering the world I had the idea for. Now, the first book is complete and I'm on my way to publishing it.

I have an agent, a respected one, and a publisher, I'm nearly there.

  • @cybersunday07 whats the name of the book

  • @MrChaingunCheney - Orion and the Sword of Light. Originally "Sword of Kings" but after it was stolen by a temp at my former agent, I had to change the name. All copyrighted of course, to avoid any further problems.

It's not out yet, by the way, June 19, 2012.

  • @cybersunday07 Amazing story, good luck :)

  • Wow, I can't even begin to tell you how inspiring you are. This video pretty much sums up my life. I'm 21 and have completed four novels but I just can't find an agent because they all say I'm too young. Sometimes I do feel like giving up; going to uni or getting a proper job but your videos motivate me to keep going. thank you :P

  • how did you get your book published

  • I love this video so much. It's so inspiring, and I watch it almost every time I write. I'm so glad you're bringing back the writing videos. =)

  • great voice

  • You have a great voice!

  • My 8yr Gabriela make story and right them..In school the teacher take her to other grades so she can read her story to other class rooms other grades..I'm so proud of her..she wants to be a writer when she grow up..I will show her this video..so she can have and idea but I guess she already has it..God bless my little writer..

  • Whenever I can't write and watching books signings is not doing it for me.. I watch this video... on my ipod.... Luv it! :D

  • thank you so much that is a perfect answer

    i just have one question

who is your publisher for bran hambric?

  • Out og all videos explaing how to write, this one is the best. You've inspired me greatly.

  • There's just no words to describe this video.

  • I love to write and I dream and hope almost every day to get published and get my story out to the world. Whenever I don't want to write, or want to write but have trouble getting concentrated I flip this video on and I'm instantly inspired to write.

  • I watch this every time I find it hard to write. Instantly hit the notebook again and write pages and pages. Thanks Kaleb!! :)

  • some retarded bitches disliked this video 'cuz they wanted to learn to write a book. Kay, bitches, this is what you have to do: go to school, study grammar and literacy at best, research books and how authors got so successful. Finally, decide ideas, decide something interesting and research how the genre of your book is gunna be and what characteristics to use.

Remember, kids: write what your heart wants you to write, trying to write a book people will like will make your book lose that spark

  • (: Amazing! <3

  • I have such good ideas I've lierally fallen in love with, but I'm not a good writer at all. It's so frusterating when I have this scene playing in my head and when I sit at my computer to write I go blank.

I sometimes debate on giving my ideas to my friend whos an amazing writer, but every time I prepare my email to send her I stop. I cancel it or exit it and think why don't I just send it.

The truth is I love my ideas and I still hold hope one day I'll actually write it all down.

  • @UcciTV I think i can help u out with that. I just started writing a month ago and I'm almost done with it. It'll be a great book for me. Go to the computer and just think of something and when u think of it just right away put it down somewhere. That's what had happened to me. But i got it out right away and typed it onto the computer. Then i just come up of whats going to happen.

  • This video is such a beutiful piece. It not only applies to writing, it applies to so many things. I'm a filmmaker and I got the chills when I watched this. Especially the part where he mentions the creation of a concept; revising and changing to the point of giving up and finding something new thats temprorarily interesting. "But some people press on through the hard times, they keept it up until they reach the end and write that last word. Those are the people who become authors" inspirational

  • woow its so strength-giving for those future writers..

    awesome!... :)

  • oh hey look its me! lol oh wait, my attention span can't get me to write from 5pm to 2am. but damn my book would get finished so much faster that way.. lol. Gonna watch this tomorrow so i get inspired.

  • This is probably my most favorite video ever! I'm at that point in the writing process where discouragement is high and it's easier to talk myself out of doing it. I keep pressing forward, that's what I do, but your video gives added strength I appreciate. Thank you for creating such an inspiring video for aspiring authors. <3

  • Can I get a copy of that writing playlist? Lol, are you going to be participating in nanowrimo Kaleb?

  • lol 2 people have no imagination

  • im stuck for an idea, can u please give me a tiny teeny idea plz =)

  • Im about to cry.. and I don't know why!

    Amazing video Kal..!

    Bw, Nadgee

  • I think this video was amazing. The format was so professional yet at the same time it felt personal - like you were talking to me. Congrats Kaleb :)

  • The first draft of my first novel originated in 2002, when I was 7, and in 2010 I finished the first installment in the series. I, totally, agree with everything you said!

    Great video, Kaleb!

  • @TheAdventuresofTime ooohh, what's it about?

  • Kaleb,

I'm almost done rereading The Farfield Curse, and it reminded me of how inspirational your videos back when you were in Texas were to me, writing wise. It's just as inspirational reading The Specter Key, because of this video and inspired I am to continue my work with literature. Thank you.

By the way, everytime I read Bran Hambric, I imagine it exactly like a film. I haven't imagined any book like that before. That tell you something? ;)

    -Ethan

  • This sounds a awful lot like my E-R-th Chronicles, that I have been writing seance 6th grade. 9 books later, and I'm only now on the third actual novel form of the book. Instead of them being Comic Book, or hand written.

  • 525 people like this video and only one person hates it! Well, screw that guy!

  • I agree you should do more videos like this. Especially for one of the last days untill Bran.

  • IM GUNA BYE YOUR BOOK!

  • This video was awesome. Your voice sounds really cool too haha

  • You type fast 0_o.

Plus, this video is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. :)

  • This is a beautiful video. Not only that, I have a film test tomorrow and this is helping me remember all the different types of focus =]

  • So inspiring. Makes me wish my computer wasn't fried so I could get writing again. <3

  • I'm an aspiring writer, and this is exactly what I feel.

  • That was BEAUTIFUL!

  • I watch this every time I don't feel like writing, and just want to laze about doing meaningless stuff. As soon as the video is finished, I remember why I love writing so much. Thank you for being an inspiration, Kaleb. <3

  • @MsBERDie ditto =]

  • @MsBERDie I know this is a late reply but just like you watch this video for inspiration, I make trailers for my book to get me motivated again. My ideas begin as a single image like what Kaleb says started his book, so I always start the trailer with the image as I saw it. Making it also gives me more ideas :P

  • i love this!

  • This is so amazing and inspirational.

  • I favorited this video. I really like it.

  • Kaleb you are so inspiring! So funny I was just asking myself that queston the other day what When you write or read a book what draws you the most to it and why. It it the over all story, theme, characters, love, action, plot, or genre? This video is amazing! I am reading amost done reading the first Bran right now and it is amazing! Very cool you got ot live yor dream I hope to live mine someday as well!

  • I loved the way you edited this video! What editing software do you use?

  • Wow!!! What a nice look at a "behind the scenes" moment! :)

  • this is a really cool video kaleb, idk how you find time to manage your life. =)

    you're an over achiever. <3

  • 1:16 CONVERSE.

Oh, you have writing playlists, too? Now i don't feel as weird. XDD

  • w o w

  • Deep.

  • This video is amazing! It's so inspiring and beautiful. It gives me hope while writing my own book.

  • great vid..all that you said is 100% true...I've only written one story to the end..but I lost the first part..and I was so upset that I just quit the story and gave up..I've tried to get into writing but I usually end up writing a few paragraphs then giving up..I guess I'm waiting for that one story that I just have to finish from being to end.

  • annnd it did work. on your site you said that you can call in for a signed book at changing hands, well you can also add it into the comments section if you order it from their site online. I just got an email confirming that they will ask for it to be signed.

  • kaleb, you are such a good writer and i think you should keep on going after bran hambic. you inspire me nd many other people. and i remember that wen i got the farfeild curse book you wrote yur ideas on a plastic bagg lmao that just shows how determined you are lol

P.S.-----------I CANT WAIT FOR THE SPECTER KEY!!!!!!-------------

  • Thank-god, you make me sound less of a nutter when I think about how I started writing my novel and never actually thought about getting it published. I guess I just really love my characters :)

  • This made me cry. This perfectly explains my experience as an aspiring writer and it means a lot to see another person's passion for it. Thank you, Kaleb. You're a true inspiration.

    Cheers!

    -Tessa

  • I've been writing one book (actually, it's not a book, books are published. It's a story right now) for six years. It started out horribly (I was only eight), and I wanted to give up hundreds of times, but I haven't, and now I feel it's quite good. This is the best video on how to write a book. All the others are cheesy and fake, but this one actually gives me chills, hope, and inspiration to keep writing.

  • Thank you, I currently have my character notes and plot lines, journals and historical info spread across my lap, this was encouraging!

  • i love how you relate this to falling in love,

all I could think about was the person I like :)

    great vid, :D

  • OK, who's the one person who didn't like this? What's his problem?

  • Been writing on several ideas since I was 16, but only recently have I actually planned anything at all, and I must say I feel about writing just about the same way you do. Great video.

  • i think this is the best video you've ever made! honesty shot in a beautiful/artsy way. keep it up kaleb!

  • Love this video, Kaleb :) It hits right at home, and I had one of my stories in mind the whole time you were describing the feeling, and it really makes me feel inspired to keep pushing on until it's finished. =]

  • that was fantastic.

  • cool video! :) btw it's not good to not turn on the light while you're on your computer at night... i guess...

  • wow you sound so passionate about writing :) <3 you should def make more vids like this i love it :D xxx

  • This made me tear up. It's..I have no words. Amazing, not just the video, but what you said in the video.

  • Tut Kaleb you shouldnt write in the dark

    Loved the Vlog though (:

  • Thank you for making this video. This is exactly how I feel about my manuscript. Sometimes though it's hard to get side tracked with daily life.

  • Perhaps the most truest video about writing I have ever seen on youtube to date. I too have that dream of being a writer and its true that ideas fall from the waste side often for me, but some actually get type onto my laptop. For example, I have over three thousand words typed about this high fantasy novel of mine. My advice for anyone who wants to be a writer just write for the fun of it and not to be rich and famous. That is true author.

  • I love the depth of field part at 1:42 =D

  • i ordered a signed copy, but since i have a slight phobia of phones, i wrote in the comments section of my order about getting a signed copy. i am crossing my fingers that it works! *eek*

  • Wow. This Vlog was absolutely amazing. I think you should base a lot of your videos like this.

I can't say whether...The music in the background, the changing views, lot of closeups. Or if it was just the True Facts. The random thoughts. You think about it. How will I write this book? Then you pretty much give an explanation, but not necessarily. :]

I really really like this & I will be using these tips in the future! :]

  • My name is Aaron Rosales I'm 13 years old and I'm thinking of making my own saga called The Bearington Chronicles I'm thinking of so many great ideas for it I hope it all goes well and that I am capable of not giving up and reaching my goal of finishing it.

  • I'm in the process of brainstorming my idea for a book or with any luck a trilogy of books. I love falling asleep to scenes running through my head like a movie. Or researching with a notebook in hand learning useless facts or meanings of names.

I have a lot orphaned stories and suffer from what I've dubbed Writer's Attention Deficit Disorder or WADD. I'm writing this because you doing this has inspired me more then I can say. I faved this to look back upon during those hard times writing

  • Damn! That video was like amazing! Did you do it yourself? Inspiring.
