  • Gabapentin, Hydroxyzine rock for anxiety and are not addicting like clonazepam or xanax, nice video.

Clonidine also is good for ME. I take low dose dextro amphetamine (for ADD) and clonidine offsets the jittery anxiety of stimulants. Those medications I mentioned also work for benzo/opiate withdrawal.

  • What medication should I proceed to? addicted to clonazepam, ativan and oxazepam(benzodiazepenes in general). So I was forced off of them by my psychiatrist. Now my psychiatrist is prescribing anti psychotics(risperidone currently), buspar didnt do anything, antidepressants gave me a mania. (I was diagnosed with panic disorder.) The panic disorder is very severe. Cognitive behavior therapy is VERY ineffective in my case. What should I do?

  • doctorofmindmd, I have a question... I have been having panic attacks usually once a month or once every two weeks due to built up stress. Aside from preventative measures like exercise and cognitive therapy, I take (1) 0.5mg dosage of alprazolam during each panic attack. Will taking this on a prn basis like I currently am, is there a high potential for addiction and/or dependence?

  • @Masteroftrancegirl Eating ground beef, consuming white sugar and doing very heavy weights on my biceps helped me ...

I think the ground beef and whte sugar helped to rebuild core tissue and resttrengthen muscles as the whole muscle tension changes when one has panic...

And the bicep work increases circulation, nd stimulates a certain part or reaction from the brain...

so there's the layman and slightly scientific explanation of what I found to work best :P

    Hahaha

  • "SSRIs, right? Did you ever pull someone off Xanax and put them on Paxil? Nice try!" Hahahahahaha.

  • Doctor, how much money do physicians earn per rx. written for the profitable meds?

  • nice shirt...my father has the same one XD

  • hey doc, forgot the tricyclics

  • im on lorazepam 1mg twice a day but i find it very weak taking 2 is a bit better than 1 but not much. if you tell them its not strong enough or helping much the eyes of suspicion land upon you making you feel guilty or something so rather than ask for more of this is there anything you think that would be better? should i ask to switch from this to something else and what do you think would be worth a try? please help, docs just make me feel like im doing something wrong making me more anxious!

  • How would you treat a mix between ADHD and anxiety? It seems like what helps one tends to make the other worse, but both affect my life.

  • Comment removed

  • Doc you ever mix adderal and benzos ?

if adderal is to concentrate and anxiety is to frustration and the frustration is to the lack of the concentration it might be a good mix

  • @NiggaNWA1 NO, very bad idea.

Frist.- Adderal and amphetamines-like stimulants in general are contraindicated in people with anxiety. People with ADD and anxiety problem usually are prescribed with tricyclic antidepressants. However if the low concentration persist a doctor would analize it. Second.- Benzos like ativan or xanax worse attention/concentration and memory and are NOT indicated for "frustration" (its that a psychiatric condition???).

  • @DendrilopisXaggro I have anxiety and ADD and I amphetamine-like stimulants dissolve my anxiety. So I disagree. Thanks

  • i needed anti anxiety meds yesterday when i went to the dentist but i am a brit and had to just grin and bare it lol.hope your ok dr

  • the best for anxiety are ssris, escitalopram has worked good for me, but the first months were hell as ir produced more anxiety, long term effect is the one you seek with this medication, i feel almost panic free or very mild accelerations only after 6 months treatment at max dose (20mg)... so alprazolam is the best for the first weeks after the initial neurotic shok, then clonazepam is much better after that cause alprazolam turns unstable after a short while...

  • Do you think the benefits of benzo's outweigh the negatives doc? and do you think a low dose anti-psychotic like risperidone could be effective treatment for GAD? cheers doc.

  • I was prescribed Celexa for anxiety after 2 assessment visits. Made me feel stoned and sooo sleepy, so I stopped taking it (might as well smoke a joint if I get anxious. better than falling asleep even though I just downed an extra large coffee) And follow-up appointment? Ha! I can't even call the doctor who prescribed the stuff to me. And I live in the land of "socialized" medicine.

  • hi, im a university student, ive been suffering from gad for over a year, ive recently been aking Valerian Root Capsules, which seems to help alot, I was wondering if Buspirone, would be a good choice to combine with the Valerian, or whether anithistimine would be any use? thanks doc

  • @george05032010 well both buspirone and antihistamine are not benzodiazepines so it may be worth a try. I dont combine herbals and prescription in most cases it should be one or the other so going from valerian root to valium is a big jump and the others you mentioned can be effective for some people and are not benzos good question thanks , mark

  • Xanax to Paxil...that's like going from Sunshine and calm waves to 500 200 mcg of acid with Slayer constant loop! AAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • Hey Doc, love your videos. Sometimes I can't hear the words distinctly, though. Can you write out the name of antidote you mentioned for the Benzos?

  • Doesnt really help with daytime anxiety, but atenolol is excellent for nightmares. I think its more for ptsd, and the terror at night that comes with it.

  • I dig your stuff. I'm not a patient or a doctor. I have no one close to me that has need of any medications or the like. I just really like to hear you, an expert, talking in a relaxed manner about subjects that you are intimately familiar with. I love learning. I think sometimes I get more out of some of the offhand comments that you make. It's nice to just eavesdrop on your profession a bit. Never stop learning my grandfather always said. You really seem to love and care about what you do

  • I remember your famous propranolol vid that was AWESOME!!!

Cant you upload it again or even remake it???

  • I miss your famous propranolol vid!! I wish you would upload it again or even remake it!

  • because of my ignorance i cant appreciate this video much. although aspiring doctors should. the doc. understands the road of psychiatry that is recently paved. good job.

  • i have a Rx for clonazepam ... have since '93 . I don't take it daily . I take it only in as the doctor here refers to genuine panic or worse ... I feel a bit agitated/bitchy the day after I take it seems like ... and it does beat up your liver if y ou're a daily consumer ...

  • I'm no longer on benzos which I did notice my anxiety was worse when I didn't take em, I'm now on Atarax and it seems to be helping. I'm also onLamictal which has been a miracal drug for me as far as mood stabilizer.

  • I got anxiety, its both genetic and environment. Getting chocked at work, and other bad stuff. One of my brothers he acts anxious too, and another brother wont talk to people who he dont know at family get togeathers.

  • why did you remove all of your previous videos? there was such a great wealth of information in those vids from months and years back. it's really a shame that you took them down. i really learned a lot from them and even watched them repeatedly from time to time if i was interesting in a particular thing that you had talked about. please reconsider posting them again.

  • What about propranolol (a B blocker) for stage-fright?

  • @eugenionescu yes i forgot to mention antiadrenergic agents but technically they are still cardiac not psych meds, i like propranolol, once i made a famous vid on it...

  • i know i guy who is a morphine addicted, takes enough morphine in one day to make a non user overdose, he has all sorts of physical health issues too alot of it i think is related to the pills he takes, as well as morphine hes swallowing diazepam in high doses, takes antipsychotics stelazine i think, sleeping pills, anti-histimines, anti depressants and alot of other things. god knows how he is still alive but hes been doing this for years. really dont know how the doctor can give him all that

  • Doc could you do a video on 5-HTP?

  • Great vid! thanks so much for making this video doc! lyrica works for my GAD. Did you know the z drugs have no anxiolytic properties like sleep aids like halcion or temazepam so in some ways you could say thay are less addicting.

  • You are such a natural teacher, easy to understand and the way you use defferent tools to teach is great!

  • thank you. gee, good thing I have not had codine around. My baby doctor gives those out like candy. I am having good results with zoloft, klonopin and trazadone. I gained a ton of weight on paxil. Was able to lose all that weight on zoloft and the extreme atkins diet. But am able to keep it off on zoloft. yay! What a learning curve! But at least I am getting a clue and don't feel helpless now. Thank you so much for the education. You are as hot as ever. :)

  • I took gabapentin when I was very ill with PTSD. I helped me a lot. I could not get it from the knowledge challenged doctors where I was so I waited for a locum tenens (traveling temp doctor) who immediately gave it to me. Those doctors in Nome Alaska are a suicide causing attrosity.

  • theres a role for gabenergic agents, but not gabapentin and even lyrica, they both made me dumb as sht, they are definitley addicting and have weird side effects, and weird withdrawals, even though they are effective for anxiety and sleep, they arent a safe alternative to benzos IMO, if u dont mind being dumb as sh8t.

i would only take a gabanergic agent only if i took a cogntive enhancer.

  • Happy Easter ! I was trying to get off of klonopin, and my Psychiatrist took me off of it abruptly, and put me on phenobarbital, and clonidine. It was hell. I am however, completely off of everything now except for prozac and ropinirole, which I take for RLS. (I think the RLS is a result of coming off of the klonopin so quickly.)

  • I am Rx'd alprazolam and have terrible anxiety. I find it helps a lot but I hesitate to take it b/c it makes me so sleepy. Calm but sleepy...so I take less than directed and am still carefully monitored by my physician. It helps me, truly. Luckily, my tolerance is still VERY low. I am vigilant and aware of how I am taking it and any patterns, there. And I'm honest with my doctor. Gabapentin feels very much like a sedative to me, I agree. Thanks for information! Good as usual.
