That's pretty fuckin stupid that they flip a coin to see what side of wall to judge.Everybody knows that Block aren't perfect Besides these Retarded Rules and Judges.
I dont care what anyone says, these guys are fast... They should have a 12" block comp though to seperate the men from the boys...i have been a mason for about 7 years now and on long straight walls can lay about 700 8" block a day but most of the foundations we do are for multi-million dollar houses and consist of 12" block and tons of variations in the layout i.e. 45 degree walls, 60' high parapit walls, ect...
@pacers714 What the hell are u talking about? 700 a day on a commercial building is nothing crazy. I know guys who can run 850-900 a day. When u get paid by the block u hustle. U just proved part of my last comment, "Seperate the men from the boys"..... Me = Man, U = boy.... Nuff said.
They should have a fastest stone masons competition. Maybe a 2' x 4' pier. Judge on controlled thickness of joints, plumb and sharpness on corners, etc. I;d enter that.
i hope all the company owners are watching so when your feelin a little lazy, theyll pull out this vid and say ur slackin!youll work yourself outta projects, and give me alot of work in turn
So - just over 100 blocks laid by a three-person team in 20 minutes. That's about 36 person-seconds per block?
While the craftsmanship is respectable, it really seems like we're due for a leap in bricklaying automation. Current packaging systems could place a brick in about 0.36 second (100x top human speed), have the mortar measured out to the millimeter, and could work 24/7. 20-25,000 bricks per day, or quite a large house appearing nearly overnight. And that's with one brickie onsite.
@Geminii27 Only one contestant is laying block. The other two are the tenders. If we assume the mason laid over 100 block, he would have laid about one block every ten seconds.
They're helping by positioning all the materials and keeping them restocked, though. If he had to go get his own materials and cart his mortar up and down the full length of the wall, he might well take longer than 30+ seconds per block on average.
@anamiapie I find ways to simplify processes, usually saving a couple million dollars along the way. Occasionally I hang out with an engineering brainstorming team. We design and build stuff. I also hand out five-figure finder's fees on occasion. It's a living.
@Geminii27 yeah ok....easy come easy go... Grem you watch to much T.V. try talkin that shit on the site and watch how fast you get turned inside out>?
how long do u think it would take one bricklayer to set up and load one of these machines? How much would a machine like this cost? it takes four guys four days to completely brick a house with no electricity. that could never be replaced by a machine. there are far too many varibles on a job site for this to be realistic
The bricklayer wouldn't load the machine. The machine would use current pick-and-place technology to load itself from delivered pallets. One brickie should be able to construct a complete house, with utilities, from a bare slab to ready-to-own in approximately two days. Internal finishing and landscaping should take a further one day.
what kind of finishing for a whole house would take a day, you fucking shithead. its dumbasses like you who think that everything should just fly together and be done in a week or less, when in reality a simple interior in a small house would take at least two weeks, unless its interrior like a manufactured home, but then again you wouldnt brick that.
@crazystoneworker Ah, the soothing voice of the internet. Don't worry, I absolutely believe that it would take you two weeks. It'd probably take a while for a mechanic to completely assemble a car from its individual parts, too. Even a team of mechanics. Lotta screws and wires there.
Henry Ford did it in ninety-three minutes.
Modern plants - completely automated assembly - can do 200 an hour.
So go on. Tell me assembling something with no moving parts in a couple of days is impossible.
@Geminii27 you think people are going to pay for a automated robot to go up as many stories as you would like and lay brick you don't understand shit...a 5k brick house isn't cheap...even in canada.
@Geminii27 Hey now im a brick mason and i'll tell you right now your not nearly as smart as you think you are.Theres no way in hell a machine could ever lay brick.
@man2hunt Of course, you are absolutely right. The robot bricklayers at v=aJ5q8fhw6Gs and v=XjHJY7_BzOI don't exist at all. Neither does the one at v=C60bzkpfMnc. And there is no way that the robot at v=-yv-IWdSdns could really be laying that mortar down in precise shapes, or building a wall completely unsupervised. Your job is completely, totally, absolutely safe. Because, after all, there's no way a robot could ever get faster ( v=7iqHSlgpapY ) or be made dustproof ( v=L3hYpxqTV-s ).
@Geminii27 you sound like a commi...maybe you should re-calculate. This is 1 of the oldest trades in the world, it's not like building a car, so pick up a trow and get to work mee son!
@dzibutti Level is one of the six criteria contestants are judged on. The top course of the wall at three locations, both ends and in the middle are judged. The single point of greatest deviation in each of the three sections is recorded. The number of 1/8" deviations in excess of 1/8" (1/8" at each location is allowed) is deducted.
I know you re-use the blocks but why not hold the comp at a real building site so the blocks stay in place. It would be a bit harder to arrange i know.
You and your boss should sign up for the 2010 competition then. We still have a few spots open. You can compete for thousands of dollars in cash and prizes including an MK Diamond BX-4 Saw and Marshalltown tool bags. Sign up today at fastesttrowel [dot] com.

For all of you who don't know they're called "BLOCK" not "brick". 6:28 is the fastest way to lay block. Been laying block for 25 year in S.Fl. and I'll betcha 6:28 laid the most. However laying the most doesn't mean you win. Also, why don't they tell you how many blocks they laid?
I laid 136 but didn't place, they don't give enough time for jointing, if you lay more blocks you should have more time to joint. Also, points are supposed to be deducted from how many laid, but are not.
Wow, I didn't notice that guy till you mentioned it! The way he puts on his head joints is pretty neat. the outside bed is used for the inside head joint, then while is doing that joint he also is picking up a block and moving it towards the wall then while that happens he is using the inside bed for the outside head joint. The guy is like an oiled sewing machine! Thanks for pointing him out.
Have you ever tried laying bricks? Did you know it takes ten years to become an excellent bricklayer who has been there and done that. Bricklaying is just like other skilful trades, but also to have a natural dexterity with tools is a great advantage. I have noted over the years that DIY is limited to trades in which a lot of time can be taken with materials that do not go off The wet trades are the most difficult to master.
i have been laying bricks for 6 years or so,before that i was hoddying for a couple of years,i could lay quicker, and neater than these boys,uk bricks are heavier to,these blocks go down quick,.
as for jointing do it as you go along.
my old firm, wanted four hundread blocks a day,or 900 face bricks, its hard but very do able.
This is the way we lay them in S.Fl. No where else that I know of do they lay them this way. Although our count has been hampered because of all the wire and steel we have to use, on a house I get from 600 to 800 a day, and a warehouse 700 to 1200. It's 99% rough work down here stucco & drywall, with TB not BB so you don't have to worry about height, just plumb and level. I heard of a guy laying 2000 in a day on a big foundation. It's possible if you throw em and your back can hold out.
@originaldanman i think if you own your own buis. you would try to lay 800 per. but the average joe is laying 450-500 with windows...get on a long straight wall you could not easily put 800-1000 this is every day life mee friend not a comp.
@cndbrn791 I'd be suprised if the average Joe puts in more than 400 block on a house these days. As for "try" to lay 800, put it this way. Last Tuesday I laid 650 on an addition and my back was out (I'm old now). So I think I can still do better than just try. Every fast mason I ever worked with could lay 800-1000 every day on a warehouse easily, and we competed everyday, in real life. Of course our backs are paying for it now, but back then it was fun.
@pacers714 Unlike you I do believe in God, and I don't lie. For I am going to have to answer to Him for every word I speak, and so will you! I feel sorry for people like you who are miserable lost sinners on the road to hell and want everyone else to be as miserable as you are, which is proved by all your NEGATIVE posts on this video. youtube.com/watch?v=hAPQUpF0Km4 Check this video out "O you of little faith", this is every day life sir, and I know you could never keep up. God bless.
we dont use those hollow cinderblocks in the uk,ive only used them a couple of times when working in oz,i found it no bother to lay the back bed,but spreading the bed at the front was a real pain, took me all week to feel comfortable with it by which time i was back on the face bricks
me and my brothers will smoke em
