@theconnor7890 Good job starting your 'tiel out with attention and affection. K.C. didn't say much of anything until around 6-9 months as best as I can recall. First he'd wolf whistle, Then he started blabbing and hasn't shut up since! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@redwillow88 Thanks. He's a very smart cockatiel and is normally sweet but gets grouchy when moulting. Thanks for watching and best of luck with your new 'tiel!

@gottaluvbirds Ha! He got lots of rubs yesterday evening so he was quite happy. Crazy bird wants says he wants his "rubs" all the time! Thanks for watching!
@traxxas1011990 Thanks for the comments. No, he's a he by the way, and he just started talking and hasn't shut up. What is remarkable is that he made up his own sentences. He says stuff we never taught him like 'that's pretty but you can give me rubs.' Smart bird I guess.
THATS THE FIRST TIME ANY ONE HAS MADE SENSE OF THE CHATERING FROM BIRDS THAT ACTUALY SOUNDED LIKE WHAT THE BIRD SAID, I HAD A COCKATIEL AND NEVER NEW WHAT IT SAID... IWAS A KID 30 YRS AGO...
@dumbcup Thanks a lot for your comments. Since he chit chats on a daily basis, and we've listened to him for years, it was pretty easy to figure out what he was saying. The interesting part is that he makes up his own sentences by running phrases together. We never taught him to do that so he's a pretty good talker.
You really seem to love your bird :) I am getting one soon hopefully, any tips for a first time owner? I had pigeons when I was little, two babies that were abandoned and they did die after a while, and a finch I saved that was laying out in the snow to die or something, lol, and that pretty baby got a few months of great love and care. Can't wait to have a fresh new bird that I'm not keeping in ease until it's approaching death lol
@WitheringChild Yes, I'm happy to share some bird thoughts with you. The key thing we've learned is that they aren't on auto-pilot. You have to tend to them, spend time with them, and clean up after them. Cockatiels live a long, long time so think about that, too. Also consider that you must include them in your lifestyle and have to plan for their care while you are gone. They can be destructive, too (bite phone lines, paper, etc) so keep an eye on your bird if it is out of its cage.
@Winkiedoodles Thank you for taking time for me :)! Ha, you sound like my Dad, he keeps saying over and over, "They're a big commitment" and then gives me a judgmental stare lol. Very true though. I bond very closely with my pets, so I'm looking forward to a companion with a longer lifespan. I do move around a lot, but I can just put a cover on his cage and the bird will be fine with the travel? Sorry to bother you with another question, but thanks again for answering, I really value your input.
@WitheringChild You are welcome. There's really no way to sugar coat the responsibility that comes from having pets and obviously you have a good handle on that! As for traveling, yes, we just put KC in a smaller cage and throw his night blanket over it and he travels just fine. It takes a while for them to get used to different surroundings so expect the bird to be real quiet at first. They are very smart. Best wishes!
@WitheringChild If I may chime in, I agree that 'tiels are a load of responsibility and are time consuming. The most important thing regarding bird care is DIET. Unfortunately most pet stores aren't helpful in giving good info, so do lots of research. Watch out with what you read on the internet. Look for stuff written by veterinarians, not long term bird owners or breeders 'cause a breeder could be defined as anyone who simply puts a boy and girl bird in a cage together ;) -avian vet tech 4yrs
@JFdragonfly Thanks, Dragonfly and those were excellent comments. We have been somewhat puzzled with our bird's eating habits. He's fine and healthy, but doesn't seem to like any fruits, vegetables or things like that. He loves his seed mix and an occasional millet treat and some wheat bread from time to time, but that's it. I've seen vids of 'tiels eating all sorts of stuff so I'm one of those owners who doesn't say much about diet.
@JFdragonfly Thank you :)! Yes, I have been obsessively researching, lol. Everyone seems to keep stressing variety, mainly a pellet diet, maybe a pinch of seeds, then veggies and eggs and stuff for like 20% of the daily diet?
Daww, so cute! I got my 'tiel from a pet store, not hand raised or clipped, but with a bit of patience he is the sweetest wee guy, and loves his rubs.
@Evandile Thanks for watching and your kind comments! They can be great birds for sure. KC is the second friendliest cockatiel we've had and is mostly a sweetie but, like a lot of birds, gets moody when he's moulting. Loves his rubs though!
@HighVoltage4562 Well it sounds like you have a nice friendly bird. We've had females before and they never said anything. We thought KC was a female at first until he started all his jibber jabbering. Thanks for watching KC's video and best wishes with your 'tiel.
@kreollicious We've had a lot of comments about how to train birds, but our experience has been just like yours. This bird was hand raised from a baby and therefore he didn't mind being handled. If yours is a pet store bird the only thing I can say is to just keep playing with him or her. Each cockatiel we've had has been different and some just weren't friendly at all. The ones we got from private individuals were the best and tamest.
@kreollicious He made that sentence up, probably by accident, but it sure sounds like he's putting two phrases together with the word "but". We're still amazed. Thanks for commenting!
Lol, that is great! My cockateil like headrubs too, but he doesn't say "gimme rubs" like your awesome bird, instead he says "RMmnnph?" and puts his head down. However if he does not get the disired result he has a COCKATEIL TANTRUM. (DUN DUN DUN) This involes alot of hissing and angry squarking while searching for a nearby finger to bite. Lol, again, great vid!
@TheHaylStorm9 Thanks a lot, Hay Storm. Your tiel sounds cool; I'll check his vids! We don't know how or why this one started saying "gimme rubs." He makes stuff up. Perhaps he combined 'want your rubs' with 'gimee a kiss' that's the only thing we can figure out. Gimmee rubs is still one of his favorite things to repeat over, over, over........!!!!
Isn't it wild? That goofy cockatiel goes on and on, almost every day, wanting his "rubs." We're not really sure where or when he picked up on the phrase in the first place.
Thank you! He's on the back deck at the moment, watching the wild birds at the feeder, and jabbering something about "pretty bird." I wish we had an aviary so he could fly around and get a girlfirend.
Thanks for watching! What is amazing is that on his own the bird made up that business about "That's pretty, but you can give me rubs." We never taught him that.
Awe he reminds me of our bird pepper. He says simular things, but its funny how they sound different though. They just love their pats don't they?? My daughter sometimes takes hers to bed for a cuddle.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Madmoggy! Ever since papillons arrived he hasn't be a "free ranger" for his own safety. But he does like getting out from time to time and loves his "rubs."
MadAidy, that is a situation we encountered once before. Brenda bought a pretty gray male (we named him Zorro) at a pet store and he never tamed. He'd just freak out and bite you if you tried to handle him. We wound up "trading him in" at a bird store for one that was hand-raised.
oh....but Gizmo cost me quite a bit of cash i'd be very distraught if i traded her back. but she doesn't attempt to bite she just panics like holy hell from like the slightest thing from changing her food and water. would it really be appropriate to trade her??
Goodness, no, please don't take our example as what is right for you. Our space cadet was an "el cheapo" that we never really 'connected' with (he did nothing but sit there and, as mentioned, spaz out if you tried to come near him). So, it was no big deal to swap him. The "new" bird was real friendly until he grew older and was having relations with an ink pen and I took it away and he became a terrorist. Probably best to keep interacting with Gizmo and see if she responds.
So cute! I have a young gray tiel. She's only about 8 months old or so. A fiesty little thing she is, but is getting used to her surroundings and doing great!
Mud, aren't cockatiels something else! We thought KC was a girl for the longest time, only to finally figure out he was a he. What's your little one's name?
Kalix, thanks for the great comments! "Goofball" is, in fact, one of the most common descriptors we have of that silly bird. He starts in blabbing about wanting his "rubs" sometimes around 6:30 a.m.....when your two begin their vocalizing you will yearn for the quiet days! Ha :)
your bird is great, mine wont let me get near em, or it bites me,i cant let it out of the cage or it flies everywhere, i wish my cockatiel even stood on my hand
Yup, understand! We had a beautiful white male once that was nice but then got real mean like you are saying. I guess some birds are just "simmered down" or something.
CPT, ha! Thanks for commenting! That silly KC would probably get more rubs if he'd shut up for a minute or two (ha)! He's listening to this vid now and yacking away even though his cage is covered.

He's found out that persistence pays off, too! BTW, we didn't teach him to say "Gimmee Rubs" instead, he made it up himself by combining "Give me a kiss" (which we would say all the time) and "Get your rubs." His IQ is 152; which is 2x mine.
