  • great video clip! Great information!

  • awesome vid man

  • 5/5 or more like 100/100

  • I loved what u played. Could u tell me what it means when in a Tab they write GUITAR PASS- what does pass mean here?

    Thanks,

    Newbie Guitarist

  • good lesson and good advice too...keep it up!

  • I´m writing from Venezuela...

    Really a good explaining

    Really good Work

  • man, this was a good video! and i'll bet tim agrees to!

  • I have been playing guitar for 7 years, touring for 5 and have thousands of hours of fly time (live play time) and haven't really experimented with this. Very cool little tip that I am kinda kicking myself for not thinking of myself.

  • One of the best teachers I have ever witnessed!

  • your funny at the same time

    tnx...

  • yo man as a fellow guitarist your metlod and explanation of why those licks and riffs are so peaceful and harmonious. you did a really good job of explaining the way different guitarist and instrumentalists for that matter learn to opperate in unique styles, using music theory and or learning it by ear.

Rock on Man and Keep it real

  • scales and modes are a waste of time!

use you eaaaaaaaars thats what musics about.

  • @skint0n0minted Yeah but if you know your theory, it makes it easier to understand and convey the emotions you feel. Say you wanted to show a dark and dreary mood. Locrian would work perfectly, and you would have a place to start.

  • good lesson & true abut the music theory part. a little will go a long ways.

  • your videos help me more than any other instructional video. everytime i watch one of your videos i get a light that turns on in my head. keep the videos comin!

  • very cool lesson, David. I am definately going to use this technique from this point forward. Thanks.

  • you can play a minor pentatonic form with a major key. just take the root note of that major key and drop a minor 3rd (3 frets down from root.) now you've found the root note of the relative minor of your original key. if you're starting with the root note, you're playing a G-form pentatonic scale which is the most popular. there are 5 pentatonic forms / shapes for any key just like there are 5 notes in the pentatonic scale: CAGED- root=G form, b3=E, 4=D, 5=C, b7=A form. peace.

  • He's good at explaining and doesn't bore you because he plays often :)

  • thanks a LOT, i knew of music theory a lot, but now i'm learning guitars, and with a metal tune now i can get this pentatonic sound that i wanted... thanks a lot for this video... (yeah, i was trying some deathlish-blues style on guitars, i knew about other instruments but in guitars i'm a newbie, your videos really help me a lot)

  • Lol @ him struggling to speak @ 2:58 (great lesson btw)

  • music theory isnt that difficult and it elps u a ton, trust me

  • thanx so much - helped me move outside the box. I've had enough theory training to know how to vamp within the box, but your brain gets so programmed by sticking in the scale. This lesson helped a lot. ROCK ON

  • Good point on knowing some theory! It's really important indeed.

  • this is awesome

  • hey, first time ive seen any of your videos, your realy good at guitar nd teaching, the way you describe wat your playing is realy helpfull. keep up the awesome videos.

  • Ive been studying music and guitar theory for about a year and all i have to say is he is right if you wanna progress faster and much more efficient go take a guitar theory or music theory class you will be glad you did, and for those who will say ill learn by ear, it will help much more trust me.

  • for sure. i took a guitar theory class after playing for a few months.. after taking the class i have a lot more understanding of music. i still go by feel, but when i dont know where to go, i pull out the theory and it helps a lot.

  • thanks dave

  • I think some of the best examples of using outside notes while soloing would be seen in Marty Friedman and Allan Holdsworth, those 2 use outside notes all the time but they are like masters at somehow making them sound cool :P Kick ass explanation dude

  • I am enjoying your enthusiasm. It's infectious and contagious. GREAT teacher, (good people, dude.). Thank you.

  • very well explained, thanks!

  • As a noise music and 12 tone music aficionado, I don't find dissonant unpleasant at all, but that's more a cultivated thing than anything else.

    Excellent vid.

  • very cool technique. thanks for the tip :)

  • these vids helped me soo much with my playing :) thank you sir :)

  • Great job on the teaching!!! Music Theory is really important especially over time because it really enables one to have musical conversations with other musicians to communicate much broader ideas in a very short amount of time. It is also just like any pedal or type of guitar in that it is a massive tool to use. It is like showing up to build a house with a complete set of craftsmen tools when others show up with rocks.

  • Really cool man thanks

  • very helpful. thanks.

  • Damn this adds alot to my playing, thank you so much. I watched your other videos too and your a really cool guy, I wish I could have you as a personal teacher haha.

  • I've never really messed with pentatonic. I just learned the regular modes like minor, lydian, mixolydian, and so on. Should i take my time to learn all the pentatonic scales since i already know all the modes?

  • Its a cool sound to mix pentatonics with the modes so I would say yes, its nice to know both. Rock on!

    DT

    myspace . com/page9

  • Your best lesson in a LONG time hands down.

    Great info!!!

  • Ahh, I understand, Master..."coolnesss, not dissonance." My new mantra....

  • GREAT!!! exacly what I needed!!!

  • Thank you so much dave!! This is going to help my playing sooooo much. As much as I play scales and throw in blue notes, I never even came close to thinking in this fashion. Why?? I don't know but I wish I had brought my electric to work instead of my acoustic because I want to try this so bad and my acoustic neeeds to have the action lowered hehe....

    Dm

  • Thanks alot please keep up the good work!

  • Real good lesson Thanks.

  • Begginers should watch thiz lesson!!!

when i was younger i learned this on a book in a far more complicated explanation, i had no "easy start". i started with tenson resolving theory about melodic resolution.

  • David, all of your lessons are good, this is one of the great ones. Thanks.

  • Hey Dave, I got a Q for ya for your next Q&A session.

Q: What's under the hat? :-o I don't think we've ever seen you without the hat.

  • My bet is another hat.

  • yeah... ;)

  • guns n roses used a lot of these

  • damn i love these guys, i did there service for the first two months of my playing and I skyrocketed in my playing. But I do think an in-person guitar teacher is also very important.

  • Thank you for making these great videos.

  • For chromaticism no need to go out of the blues! BB and Albert King used the major 3rd in passing in minor keys. SRV had 2 licks where he interpolated the b9 between the 1 and natural 9th. He used to do that 100 times per solo! In 60s Clapton used to bend up a tone with vibrato and pick between the tonic and the leading tone. Albert King used 'ghost' notes ( b6) and microtones! Check this out: Buddy Guy 60s. C box (triplets) GF#F, CBBb, GF#F, CBBb! You can slide and chromaticize backwards too!

  • Great lesson Dave!Keep em coming.

  • awesome lesson!!

  • i dont know why you have only 400 views. your videos are awsome =)

  • Awesome job, as always this is very helpful. TY Dave & Tim too of course. :) ROCK ON!!!

  • Great ideas to play around with.

  • just inspirational

  • dam i wish i had the cash to take your online guitar lessons instead of what is on youtube

  • I've been playing for years, but these lessons always refresh my mind!

  • I agree with you about knowing some musical theory, you really hit it right on the head!!

  • This guy is so cool. I love the way he teaches all this stuff! Keep it up mate!

  • you should make a lesson, where you only be playing, using no words, using all the techniques you know, all the stuff!

  • yeah that actually is a really good idea

  • Very interesting so good work.

    Thanks for the lesson..

  • Thanks David. Very good lesson!

  • Wow this is so cool man! Thanks!

  • I never thought scales was something worth my time learning...damn, I was wrong. Cool to improvise like that xD

  • NIIIICE
