I cannot speak for the sheikh himself, but it could be because many of those who follow only certain scholars (like uthmaymeen, bin baz, etc.) tend to take on very narrow interpretations and they say that it is not enough to call ourselves Sunnis, we must call ourselves Salafis, as if to say we are ghayr madhab.

but in reality to be a scholor you would have had to have studied with scholors yourself, those scholors you studied with, they themselfs studied with thier shaikhs and so on and so forth, it doesnt come from books.
