I spent 9 days in Calangute in May 2000 and only saw 7 europeans, had basically the whole beach to myself.Paid peanuts for an apartment with a pool.Great days.Less muggings and murder in those days...
I am shocked by this video. I know things change.... Calangute was a quiet, beautiful beach in the early 70's. A place to slow down from the bussle of India and watch sunsets to the sound of sea meeting land. It now looks like that scene from Saving Private Ryan.
Hehe, india is not a cheap for swedish to go to, here it costs 20,000 Swedish kronors to go for 1 person, my family, my dad my mom and i am going today, to that beach :) so for us, it costs around 60,000 kronors which is like 12,000 dollars :P and thats NOT cheap ^^
Swedish are not the problem. The problem is domestic tourism. Coaches loads of desperate indian boys that come to see a white sun bathe. They give goans a bad name and everyone assumes all the brown people are Goans.
south calangute much quieter, even a few days after new year, the busiest parts get much quieter too, other beaches further south quieter still... go, it's amazing!

OMG.
Bit different to when I went to Calangute backpacking in 1976.
We literally were the only 2 on the beach.
