It seems that, once one reaches adulthood, you immediately develop a taste for coffee and/or tea that you didn't have before. My whole family has become big fans of tea, in whatever way you want it (black, green, herbal, hot, cold, whatever). Naturally, I'm enjoying the heck out of this episode. :)
(Also- wow, I'd had no idea that you black tea leaves aren't toasted, like green tea leaves. Who knew?)
I appreciate the "hills of hype" remark. I made my first venture into David's Tea yesterday... they did have some beautiful teas, but listening to the clerk explain to a customer about "balancing your chi" by drinking "teas that the description appeals to you- because it contains antioxidants that you're missing" made me roll my eyes.
Some of the very best tea I've ever had was fresh tea in China. Fresh as in just picked off a tea plant from the garden. Very grassy and floral, but tasty.
My least favorite tea to date was probably green tea in a Japanese tea ceremony brewed with the "thick" method. Really strong, very tannic. Reminded me of chewing on grape skins, if you know what I mean.
Memo to the British: We really need to have an intervention for that dreadful concoction you call tea. I'll bring my Chinese friends with some oolong and a few electrodes for when you insist on putting milk in the cup.
I grow tons of herbs in my garden, namely chocolate mint, spearmint, and lemon grass. Mix those up with some chamomile from a spice shop and I've got my favorite blend: Sleepy Time. :D
I have recently come to tea drinkage. I have discovered a fondness for Stash's Peppermint/Spearmint tea. Miny tea is yummy. I used to drink a bit of Irish Breakfast, but I have discovered Earl Grey is quite yummy. I think my blood will be mostly tannins now, as I've been drinking quite a bit of tea.
Thanks! I love green tea (pretty to look at, tasty, and good for ya!), so I'll have to try it...Can I find it at a regular grocery store, or is it mostly a specialty/healthy food store brand?
@missbeatrix1 Its bagged tea but sealed bags and I think it can be found easy. Depends on where you live. I suggest you check there website. Its the greenest green bagged tea I ever had. Very good flavor and greener than alot of loose leaf teas I had.
@missbeatrix1 I tried green tea. It was being given for free at a gallery opening. In spite of three attempts to drink it, it only made me gag. Subsequent tastings of genuine green have not changed my mind or my tastebuds. GAHHHHH! :O~~~~
Very enlightening! I love the beginning with the tea party! Is that his daughter, or someone else? 'Cause his daughter has appeared on many a Good Eats episode.
@missbeatrix1 His daughter is only a toddler at the time this season was filmed. Check out the Honey episode. S4E8. Pantry Raid IV: Comb Alone. She is in that one. :D
I drank tea since I was a little baby. Then when I was 10 I stopped drinking tea for a while. But after seeing this episode I drink tea at least twice a day!!!
Thank you so much for posting this! I remembered this episode and now I really want to learn more about tea and proper brewing techniques. I wish FoodNetwork would put up more on their website... or give you an option to watch online or something.
Lipton tea is the equivalent to scum in the bowels of 40 year old vessels. Anyone drinking that crap should simply drink cyanide and get it over with. Lipton is responsible for the horrific ignorance of US consumers - I have friends who think nothing of serving Lipton "tea" from teabags 5 years old - hell, after 5 years, the taste gets better...
White tea is just regular tea picked when the leaves are still small. Also, white tea wasn't popular or well known when this episode was made, so it makes sense that he wouldn't have mentioned it.
After watching True Brew a few days ago I was wondering what poor little tea drinker me should do. I apologise to Mr. Brown for doubting that he'd come up with something, and thank LTH for all their work!

If you can find them, Stash and Yogi are really good brands of tea. Amazing blacks, greens, whites, Roobios, and herbal tisanes and blends.

tea bags can be kept konger in the freezer sealed in an air tight container. We buy tea in extreme bulk around here.

I'm VERY dissapointed in Lipton! Their quality has really gone down the tubes. No offense to any Lipton fans. I just have pretty high standards.
But three of my favorite grocery store brands: Celestial Seasonings, Tazo, and Republic of Tea.

The oxygen thing doesn't make much sense to me. As you heat water, the gases dissolved in it leave, and at boiling temperatures they're gone.

Just FYI, any tea made by the company named after Sir Thomas Lipton is all Orange Pekoe, despite the fact that it's in tea bags.

You people missed the point.
You can't trust a tea that says Orange Pekoe on it, because it's become a flavour.
Also, just because Lipton owns it, it doesn't mean it's crap
