the reason why is that after Nirvana got big, Grunge was the popular music ... all the "grunge" bands didnt want there underground scene to go mainstream. Even Kurt said that he hated that the music he create was being played to people (the majority of popular kids) which he hated anmd was all against. but thankfully bands like mudhoney and the melvins are still creating music!
