HAHA I just watched the john williams video first and saw all the crazy comments then clicked on this one and they continue. Barrios is turning in his grave with crazies like you.
I love this piece! Barrios's music is beyond great. Besides, music is not a competition to achieve perfection, nothing is perfect but the almighty God that placed players like Russell, Williams, Bream, Segovia, etc., on this to aspire to and work our fingers to the caloused bone trying to find out what makes the guitar so friggin addicting! XD
Both John Williams and David Russel play this piece perfectly. There are some points at which Russel is better, and some at which Williams is better. Most people cannot compare to either of them, but it's a pleasure to enjoy listening to Barrios, whoever plays his music.
@PreludePresto I agree with you on that one. People always argue the better player, the truth is there isnt one. They both happen to be masters at guitar, and play in their own way. If you listen to the way the greats play like Bream, Russell, Willams, you notice that they almost play like the way they would act.
@Pikangu and IMO, Russell's version has more power, more clarity, a much stronger tone, better sound overall, I can't even compare it to John William's. Even he would say the same.
Odio Juzgar.........., Suena Muy Bien Y Limpio, Pero En El Tremolo..., Si David En La Mano Derecha Se Moviera Con El Correcto Nudillo, Tubiera Mas Control Sobre El Volumen De La Nota Accentada..., Se Esto Porque Mi Maestro De Guitarra Me Lo Recuerda Siempre..., Pero Ya Se Me Grabo Tambien Le Falta Mas Emocion, Como Dije, Odio Juzgar..., Pero Si Mejorara Eso, La Pieza Entera Evocara Mas Emocion.........., Buen Trabajo...........!!!!!!!!

i feel so sad for you, you ingnorant little excuse for human life. you obviously don't understand this music. Anyone can make noise via power chords and a high voltage amplifier; but to be able to play sweet, yet complex music with just your fingers and the guitar is something truly beautiful and amazing.
@Daim0th Right, that's totally because i've been playing electric guitar for like 8 years. i love electric guitar, but when someone calls david russell a "pussy" then i have no other option to assume that the person is only capable of power chords.
@Estonianwoodsman actuyally no. this is boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorring....................................this is what my grandpa would listen t0o...

There's definitely some kind of addition on the end of the fretboard to give him the 20th fret for the high C. It looks like it's made out of different material than the fretwire, which is why it's harder to see.
Supposedly when Williams first recorded the piece, he glued a piece of matchstick to the end of his fingerboard to make the "fret." It's probably something like that...
You're right, there are only 19 full frets. However, there is a smaller 20th "fret" under only the high E string and maybe the B. As I said, it's made of a darker colored material than the rest of the frets, so it's harder to see, but there are several spots in the video where you can see it clearly.
Perhaps. Too low video quality for unmistakable conclusions. But look carefully from 5:07 to around 5:19 for a strange 'linear reflection' right where a 20th fret should be, seemingly at the inside of the fretboard's arc. I doubt it would look like a line if it was just some sort of reflection. Plus it stays parallel to the other frets as the camera shifts. Plus the note doesn't sound muffed at all as it ought if played without a fret. So I think he did install a small 'fix' there.
I also notice that if you pause the video exactly at 5:10, you can see a "bar-shaped" end at the end of the E stringed side of the fingerboard. I think he somehow modified the board so that he can play it.
yes, you are right, CrAzYApE16. Barrios had on his guitar one more fret so he could reach that high note. You could still play it by substituting the High C (appears only once) to A on 17th fret.
But in this video, he is playing it right! I think he pushes the string really hard to make it sound clear. But have really no idea how he is doing it exactly. Unfortunately, the video doesn't show how he manages to do that.
I have a copy of this piece, but in the preface, it says a 20th fret is required (the high C). I stopped the video at various times and counted the frets, i only saw 19?
Anybody notice this? But also, he may have a 20th fret only for the 1st string... take a look? let me know what time if so.
His Aire Latino was sublime...and so is this performance. He should get a honorary Paraguayan citizenship or something...a rare master of latin music.
Well said - a note perfect player but he lacks expression (Williams).
A guitarist I've been watching lately on here and I have to find out if he has any DVD's is Aniello Desiderio - an absolute monster player, note perfect but with incredible character, fire and grace in his playing.

Williams blows Russell out of the water???? It's a joke isn't it? A pity that Williams can't get half the volume Russell has.....and let's not talk about interpretation....I wonder if you 've ever heard them live.....I really don't care if Williams doesn't ever make mistakes....I definitely judge other things
Williams does...and that little "I definitely judge other things" tag was an example of every condescending douche-bag tone you hear from faggots on youtube.
Just because some one doesn't go out of his way to be expressive doesn't mean that they have no musicality. Often I think the intention of the composer is lost when a performer decides to get too "expressive" a la Bream or Segovia. Of course, these are certainly great performers, and I have enjoyed their playing, but I personally prefer the musicians with a more subtle touch like Russel or Pepe Romero.
