He was proving the simple, well known point that there is pain in everything. The pain of failure, and the pain from the hardwork it took to succeed. It's a brainwashing technique once used by Veitnam, if I;m not mistaken. Driving it's prisoners into believing they deserve and lust for said pain, thereby eliminating all hope for rebellion; crushing the spoirit so to speak.
