  • Thanks for the show...good advice to remove the non-gear side first, and also the reverse threads on gear side important to know. I finally got mine off and instead of a Shimano it was some worn out unit labeled Chinaur...will replace with a Shimano.

  • is that a euro bottom bracket

  • And yeah a little grease saves headaches in the future.

  • Ah bloody always get caught out by the reverse thread on the drive side.

  • Nice and simple, cheers!

  • Maybe I'm just being an old fuddy duddy but it would have been nice to see you clean the threads with a clean cloth and then grease everything up before you put it all back in there so that if you have to take it apart again it ain't seized solid, I was taught by an old mechanic who always said "a little greasing now saves a hell of a lot of sweat later".

  • A fire at 1108 Grant Streetgn

  • I have this tool: Item # BBT-22

But the spline tool will not stay in place and will keep slipping off when I apply force. Is there a locking tool that I can use together with this?

  • can anyone help ive just brought a new onza bottom bracket but the left cup wont come off any help

  • Thumbs Up from Germany! ;-)

  • @TheDithrockt Thanks! Germany is were I started Mntbiking in 1987 near Stutgart on a steel hard tail peugeot bike and what a great place to ride.

  • @mntbiker036 I have a question, could I ask you via E-Mail because I would have to send you pictures?

  • just got hired as a bike tech at dick's and watched these 2 videos just to brush up and this is all the info i needed. thanks!!

  • the only problem with this video is, his hands are in the way of seeing what he's doing

  • Hi, great video, this is so much better than most bike repair educational vids on YouTube.

I bought a used old Specialized Hardrock that is all hacked up on the non-drive side bottom bracket cup and frame (someone tried to get it off with the wrong tools?). Well now I need to replace the BB and there is no way that piece is coming off. Is is possible to buy to an identical BB and just replace the drive side while leaving the old piece in place? Thanks!

  • ahhh matee help me, whats your tool called cause i need one of them that has the thing that actually goes into the square taper and stops the tool slipping out, whats it called ?

  • @CharlieCroucherBB It's called a crank puller. Every one needs a good crank puller,eh!

  • i like my bike to sound like that, it keeps me company on late rides

  • @Stan1455 Do you hear that sound in your sleep too! Ha HA!

  • Thanks for upload as it's been a while since I took one off. Left side was fine to get off but my right crank side is very tight on.

  • Thank you! you saved me 140$ NZD when decided to buy a new dirt jump frame, but needed to swap all the parts off my old one, I was completely lost about how to change a crankset, you made it allot easier. Cheers.

  • @Taupofreeride It's all about keeping the $ in your pocket!!! Enjoy the ride!

  • Thank you!

  • @mfyzal You are welcome!

  • hey you should mention about putting antiseize on the threads so when you got to take off the bottom bracket again it makes it easier

  • @bmxplussreader1988 Thanks, it would make it easier!

  • hi, do all BB fit the hole in the frame? If not how would you know?

  • @konyac1 Try bikepediacom and see if your bike is there then check the specs or check with your local bike shop.

  • you're either a christian or a muslim or you're an octolinkist!

  • @Berialavrenti Or a square!

  • Let's just say that I'm considering PB Blaster. I have a 2 foot breaker bar and it isn't budging the shell. Your BB must have pre-loosened so you can meet PG ratings.

  • @pcfxer Funny! I have had one that I could not get but it was found after a flood.

  • Hi there,an easy to remmember which way to tighten BB is towards the front of the bike, all bikes are the same,Reason,so the BB doesn't loosen during pedling

  • @robsarahs Thanks!!!

  • @robsarahs italian and french style b/b has right handed thread on both sides, so all the bikes are not the same but they are rare tho

  • that bottom bracket tool sockt do you have to apply that to both sides to get the bottom bracket off

  • Why take both sides off?

  • Thanks a lot for the help.

  • @heatingtube Yep!

  • The seal on my crank is made out of nylon or plastic :(

I got a Norta lrc cross bike it cost 660€ and i find it a shame that the screw is made of plastic :( When the guy of the store was thighten the screw it broke off .So why not make it out of metal? And why we people need special tools to unscrew everything?

The bike is 3 weeks old and have nothing but problems with it.First i got problems with the crank (Awfull noises that drives you crazy)...pffff o well im so frustrated....

  • @Ouroboros010110 Sorry man sounds like you got a lemon! I would try and contact the bike mfgr. and file a complaint with them.

  • Nice set of vids thanx I have a old dual sus that i am stripping down and did not now hot to get the crank off but now i do thanx for taking the time to make the vid :)

  • @whare2 Yep!

  • Really helpful. Do you use a torque wrench. Is it worth bothering with?

    Thanks!

  • @herbal1971 I did not but I would use it if you have access to it. It is very easy to get it to tight or not tight enough.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to make this video. I found it very helpful.

    Regards.

  • @sonnetg U R welcome,glad it helped u!

  • Thanks for taking the time to make this video it`s really helped me alot and will save me some money thanks :)

  • @MrWhatever45 Glad it was helpful! Enjoy the ride!

  • man i need help choosing a crankset for my bike i want the shimano deore but i also need the back derailler does it matter if i get the shadow one from shimano? or does it have to be deore as well

  • Check with the manufacturer specs or talk to a rep from the company you are buying it from to make sure they are compatible before you puchase or install them.

  • great video, its helped me alot! Thank you

  • You bet, glad it helped.

  • yup - im definitely getting my own bottom bracket wrenchs now lol thanks for the vids 5 stars

  • Tools are good!!!

  • Nice vid's, good thing Im a tool junkie. I smell a spin doctor tool kit in my immediate future. Cheers!

  • Very informative, thanks

  • Glad it was helpful for you!

  • Bro, awesome. Learned a lot today.

  • That is Great!

  • youve saved me a lot of time and mistakes ! :) thanks!

  • I am very happy it helped you!

  • Definitely.

I found a bike on the side of the road, and the bearings in the axles were pretty stiff. A few squirts and a day later, they will roll freely. Not bad for a bike which is older then me(19, i'd put it's age as early 1980's)

To everyone else, buy some WD-40. Buy a big can. You will love me for it.

  • Yes you can!

  • How do you tell which size bb you have in your frame?

  • If you can get the old one out sometimes the size will be on it, Or measure the length and the width of the frame were your BB goes in. if your not sure take it to a shop and ask them to measure it.

  • Far more helpful than the 'expert village' videos. Cheers.

  • Thanks!

  • i cant get my the bottom braket out at all. Iv taken the non drive side off and just need 2 take the drive side out but it just wont budge at all. PLEASE CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE

  • iIf u tried soaking it with like BP blaster or nut buster, your turning it in the correct direction and it still won't move then take it to a shop or you may end up with it stripped and stuck in there.

  • i got it out now it was tight so i soaked it in wd40 for a cpl of oours then i got a big spanner with plenty of leverage n it came out, just installed the new one 2day ready for the next ride now

  • Great!!! Enjoy the ride!

  • i just got 1 question, does the non drive side of the bb, the cap have to be tight to the frame coz there there is a little gap on mine???

  • As long as you have the right size bb and your sprockets and pedals line up correct and your tight then I wouldn't be to worried. If your not sure though take it to a shop and have them look @ it.

  • ok thern thanks for your help, i just realised i used the same bottom braket you put in, i put a es51 like u

  • I had exactly the same problem - the bb tool doesn't seem to sit too well in it - I'm wondering if it could have been overtightened or if there's some seal in there getting in the way? non drive side came off no problem!

  • This guy is just backyard mechanic. His never been taught the little things that can make a big difference.

  • enlighten us

  • such as...?

  • Well done video - but I think I'm taking mine to the shop to get done - the actual procedure isn't too hard but its the cost of all the tools... my local shop will supply and fit bottom bracket for around $50...(this is in Australia) - the guy in the shop showed me the various tools I'd need, with bb it was about $20 more than having them do it...

  • if my whole crank set wobbles about 1mm, is the bottom bracket broken or is it loose? thanks

  • Might be loose , or it could be your beargings are bad.

  • BIkes are great!

  • @underpantswedgy That's not always true, mine keeps crashing on me.

  • Don't forget to lube the threads with grease or anti-seize -- I prefer anti-seize. Some folks use Teflon tape on the threads, but I've never tried it.

  • yeah, I made it.... Thanks...

  • Yep!

  • Nice vid, but you forgot to reinstall the chain over the chainrings, ;)

  • Hey, don't forget to get your chain back in place as you put the new crank on.

  • thanks for the video. nice to know how it works...

  • nice

    thanks for the tutorial m8.

    from england

  • Thanks! your video helps me to understand the system how it works... Now I need the bottom bracket tool and then I try to change it...

  • blimey with this and the headset removal malarky I think its easier to buy a new bike!!!!

  • every new bike has one u fool, there are millions of bikes made before your bike came along,

  • one question..

Are there different sizes of bottom brackets? or just kinds?

  • Yep! Width and length, like 68x113 or 70x110 and you need to make sure the one you get matches the crank or pedals! If your odering from an on line company they will help you with getting the correct one if they have a tech support, Good luck man!

  • how can i get it removed without a bottom braquet tool?

  • good stuff

  • Also, you are suppose to apply ani-seize grease unless you want to ruin the frame forever. Its a sloppy video, but YOU MUST specify you made too many shortcuts.

  • 325 foot per pound, That is why YOUTUBE is dangerous, it is 325 inch per pound, (equivalent to 27 +- ft/pound). You sure have no idea about how much 325 foot per pound is.

  • hello id like your advice. the left crank arm came off my bike. how do i get it back on? your video is informative, but is there a way of attaching the crank arm without dismantling the whole mechanism? : i dont have any bike specific tools. thanks

  • 5 star, very well done old Chap

  • Thank you kindly!

  • thx, your video was very helpful to me. nice job positioning yourself in front of the camera. I was able to see very easily what you were describing. changed my crank arms today and working out very well.

  • Very glad it was of use to you. Thank you!

  • were can i buy the tools for that? :P

  • were can i buy the tools for that? xD

  • First you need to know which type of pedals and bottom bracket you have!If your not sure you can take it to a shop and ask them and maybe ask for an estamite on the job. Then once you know go on line and punch in bottom bracket tool and you'll find a lot of places that sell them.A couple of bike stores are, Nashbar, performance bike, speed goat, harris cycle. There are lots of them. You could try contacting them also. Good luck!

  • Not if your crank matches your bottom bracket!Just be sure before you buy one!

  • thanks for trying. i think ill get a sho to do it for me because i dotn trust myself not to muck it up. i may not but not worth the risk =].

  • also do i have to change my bottom bracet if changing cranks?

  • no, just slide old crank off and new one on. if u need a new bottom bracket then , yes...

  • do all cranks fit mountain bikes (and bracet)??? please post on my chanel if possible. thanks!

  • There are a couple types of cranks and bottom brackets, and some are road , some are mountain. They have to match to work! You need to be sure and ask the place were you get it from to be sure you get a matching set.I don't know how to post your chanel sorry!

  • my crank creeks A LOT is that bad ???

how do I fix it ???

Great video I learned a lot

  • It most likley needs to be lubed or tightend, you can take it out and put some grease or anti sieze on the threads. while you have it out check the bearings and see if they are O.K.... Good luck!

  • Thanks for your help !!!!

I think that my crank has seen better days so I'm just going to replace it with a new one.

  • Glad I could help!

  • this nvideo realy help me

  • Great! Thanks!
