As FLAWLESS a soundtrack as there could ever be. Probably improved the film itself by 200% than without it. Influenced so many film scores that came later.
@mofrakker What I've always liked about it is its relatively small scale -- this is not an epic-size orchestra as in the Hollywood sword-and-sandal extravaganzas of the 50s. It suited Conan, who never saved the world, but was a solitary adventurer on his own in a big world. Would the movie have been trash without the music?
whenever I hear this music I wish I had enemies that I could crush and drive before me, enemies that had women who would cry at their most brutal of deaths....but I don't...
this is a beautiful composition when that gong hits it just does it for me the vocals definatly enhance it..epic music to a epic film...conan the barbarian will always be a classic
To have been in this room, recording one of the most epic scores of movie history would have been both a blessing and a curse. You would never against have the opportunity to create something as raw, emotional, and beautiful as this.
I'm sorry but this kind of ruins it. This music is made on MOUNTAINS by steely-thewed barbarians beating their instruments in defiance of the Gods, even as they rain thunderbolts and hellfire upon them. it is NOT by a bunch of well-dressed middle aged people in a recording studio!
It has ALWAYS been my favorite soundtrack and there is NONE better than Basil's!!
I have always wanted to see the actual recording of the music to be able to watch which instruments did which parts (the less obvious ones). That was fun, Best vid ever!!!!
You've GOT to have TALENT to tackle the Conan soundtrack no doubt.
Thanks so much for the video. I would have never found a vid like this in the early 80's. No way.
Unbelievable what kind of normal people played this massive, epic over-manly soundtrack! I would have thought it was played by kind of human animals with huge muscels, long hair and fur.
It's pretty faithful to Basil's but it NEEDS the choir in the background. That part is essential. Otherwise its not bad. Still I'd need to hear Anvil of Crom. This is Riders of Doom.
@ExilLarkdanx well......Star Wars is inevitable, cos I dont know someone who doesnt recognize that music. And the sheetmusic is available everywhere. Conana The Barbarian only has a "suite" like, released some years ago by some french publisher, and it has only anvil of crom and riders of doom (I think) so is not too much to work with.
@ExilLarkdanx well.....this cd here is a new recording, its like those Marco Polo versions of very old sountracks, like King Kong or Moby Dick.
I would certainly wait before purchasing this cd, cos I know its not the Poledouris version, it will sound different, specially cos I heard Conan for about 1000 times.
@ExilLarkdanx well.......its your opinion it has no defects. I saw many in this video, and in SAE samples, Tower of Set sounds very bad, in terms of music interpretation. And its normal it sound like that, cos the orchestra was not hired for 5 months to make all perfect, but probably for a 1 day recording session, and they never saw any of the music, or listened the original Poledouris recordings, to have an idea what they where doing
@ExilLarkdanx They sound all almost the same, of course some of the extra have a bit more hiss, like the tavern, but its reduced a lot. In fact, the original Varese had an awfull lot of hiss in some pianissimo parts, but in the cimm rec I could listen it full volume and it was great!
@ExilLarkdanx It is not a DVD rip, I do have ripped soundtracks, and those are FULL of sfx (Its imposible to isolate the music completly) and this is not the case, cos Im telling you, the extra tracks doesnt sound like that.
What I did noticed is if you listen it in a home theater, since the different channels, you will hear difference cos the extra tracks are not prepared for a surround sound. If you change it to stereo system, the trakcs will sound perfectly matched in volume and tone.
Raine's version of Riddle of Steel is weak but got some interesting elements, that's why I've mixed it with the original soundtrack, check it out on my channel... ;)
The reason this re-recording sounds so different from the original is because Basil Poledouris was never happy with the original performance nor the recording of the score in Rome, for a number of reasons. Greig McRitchie's orchestration sheets of the score still survive, and James Fitzpatrick/Nic Raine wanted to re-record the score the way Basil envisioned it would have been.
@RealmoftheHeavens Hi RotH, thanks I've already ordered the CDs from screenarchives. Actually I meant the written notation for the music... the full score. :) Would love to get my hands on that.
Does anyone know if this cd is limited or a bootleg? Im trying to buy it on ebay, but wanna be sure its the original, cos their description Barcode is from the Varese, which is suspicious..... :-(
@nicolashrv Look at the YouTube video again. That first image is the cover of this new recording and it is NOT on Varese (although the Varese is an expanded score from what was released right after the film came out). You can go to FilmScoreMonthly site for details, but I thought only a few places had it to order. Like the screenarchives site (they have it for sure).
Best of luck. i can'rt wait to get a hold of this myself!
@nicolashrv Oh, I assume its because the label putting it out is small. I'm not assuming they're small (they ARE*), I'm assuming that's the reason. Its terribly rare, but maybe they didn't have a standard isbn for the seller to plug in (could be something fishy). More likely, eBay didn't have the info in their database for the new 2CD set (again, small label and JUST came out).
*someone asked a site to remove a link to download because the label releasing it is small, and the site owner did.
@nicolashrv and no, it is not a bootleg...at least the Nov 2010 2 CD set with the cover looking like the intro to this YouTube video is not a bootleg (I can't speak for the one on eBay)
I think you can't compare it with the original recording played by the both Italian Orchestras back in 1982. and i think the Timpani is OK, i also can't hear a wrong note from the violins. I will check again ;) Imho it sounds even better than the Concert from Ubeda.
@dudo101 actually you have to start listen a couple of seconds before (4:02, at 10 is the exact moment where you can hear a wrong note)
Of course the "sound" will be better....but this is an "hypotonic" version of the music. the things I pointed out are important, yes, but in general, a composition should produce something, and if it does, you dont care about if someone did this note wrong or whatever.
Im sorry if some people get offended (We are the customers, so we should demand quality)
Needless to say that i would prefer the original recordings. But nevertheless. This is my most favourite Score. I'ver ordered it. I checked the samples at SAE. SFT24 1 year ago
I instantly hear some problems with this recording :-(
some of those trumpets at beginning gave the wrong accent (0:32)
the violins actually played harder at 1:08 in the original (also at 2:08)
And there is something with the timpani at the end, cant figure out if its correctly tuned or what.
At 4:10 some violin played a fake note!!! gee!!
And for sure, there is not the "violence" that was characteristic in the original.
Lets hope they didnt added this to the cd...:-((
nicolashrv 1 year ago
@nicolashrv
I think you can't compare it with the original recording played by the both Italian Orchestras back in 1982. and i think the Timpani is OK, i also can't hear a wrong note from the violins. I will check again ;) Imho it sounds even better than the Concert from Ubeda.
