A couple of notes because this 9/11 fact is consistently misconstrued.

First: The quote was in the Sep. 11 issue of NYT. It was said before that and only happened to be in the paper that day. So the Ayers quote was not in response to 9-11, just a case of incredibly awful timing.

Second, in a letter to the editor in the Chicago Tribune, he discusses his abhorrence to the 9-11 attacks. Buchanan wouldn't shake his hand for that?

I think that most would attribute those acts, and not Ayers'"abhorrence to the 9-11 attacks" as the reason for no handshake.
