I wrote a guitar tab for this song in the open C tuning described in this video. If anyone is interested it is at ultimate guitar DOT com. Search for "Question" and look under Moody Blues for "Question (ver 2)".
And BTW, a 12 string DOES make all the difference.
The second and fourth chords have a different strum then the 1st and 3rd. They start on the upbeat. Also the D, E, F part also has a completely different struff. No break on the up beat of the 1 beat. Listen again. It took me awhile to get it down. Listen to the version from This Is The Moody. It is a different mix than the Question Of Balance version. (I beleive it's a different take). The guitar is more pronounced. Keep up the good work!.
Unfortunately, I'm a real guitar novice. Could you tell me the tabs for the chord in the second progression that you said was a D shape? Thanks so much.
i've listened to the album this song is on since the early 70's...i read where justin states that he wrote this in open C...i'm going to tune to C and try this out...great lesson...
How do you play the G7 in Open C , G7 is used for the opening of the second verse 2nd bar "and if you could see whats its done to me" the chord should be as a G7, PS thanks for the great instruction. I have been playing this in standard tuning for 20 years, who would know? thanks
I am so glad I found this! I have been wondering (aloud) for years how on earth this can be played and never realised it was in an alternative tuning. I will learn this ASAP now. Thanks very much!
As a 19 year old funk rock guitarist, I never thought other tunings would appeal, this song has genuinely inspired me now Im more of a celtic funk rocker haha thanks alot.
This video is awesome!!! it helped me learn the whole song!!! i'm an 11 year old self taught guitar player. Search "Joel Shimer" to watch my videos on youtube!!
U shouldn't break one as you are mostly tuning down;
6th string Low E drops to C, 6th string Low A drops to G, 4th string D drops to C, 3rd string G stays, 2nd string B tunes UP to C and 1st string E stays. Only B string requires more tension, the rest are loosened off. Hope that helps!

Wow - Great lesson. Sometimes people post videos which arent's all that authentic because they use different keys or voicings (still appreciated) ... but I checked out a clip of the band playing this and it is spot on!
THANKS and keep putting out more videos!
Related to your OHIO video lesson - Would you consider doing a follow up showing the pentatonic riff up the neck in more detail?
CGC "GCE"..!! not CGE for 3rd, 2nd, 1st strings... you will snap your 3rd string if you try to tune it up to a C

You said your tuning wrong. open C is CGCGCE not CGCCGE..

Love the song, thanks for analysing it for us and presenting it here.
Absolutely perfect with only one nitpicky thing.
Red Rocks is in the foothills of the ROCKY MOUNTAINS west of Denver, not the desert. The unusual rock formations just look desertlike

I tried to tune my strings to C-G-C-G-C-E and my 5 bass string broke. Are the strings also rearranged to allow for tension?

tuning sounds like: C-G-C-G-C-E
not as you say it : C-G-C-C-G-E

Steve Your lesson are a great help.
Can you do a lesson of Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward?
The intro looks simple but I have trouble with it.
Thanks
