The Smurfs are more more fascist then communist... They have one strong leader who is highly hierarchical and beyond criticism. All the work they do is for the collective, individualism is minimal(they all wear the same uniform). Also their society is extremely masculine, there is only one women, who is subservient and does all the cooking and cleaning...

Lets all not forget that this animation show was made for children. Children dont watch series for political information, in fact I even dare to doubt that they are aware of the communistic point of view, if that is even the real underlying subject. I personally always enjoyed watching the smurfs without even being aware of anything but the funny aspects. I saw Gargamel as an evil wizard and the smurfs as one big family. I never noticed that there wasnt any money as a child. Funny Doc Tho.

Sounds all positive and dandy. But in realistic terms, there is no incentive, and since there is no pheromone response that guides their instinct to work, there would be nobody "taking out the trash", as it were. Notice that many times, there is ridicule for the smurfs different traits as well by the whole as a form of ignorance. This is also something inherent in communism as well. Essentially, it is Utopia vs. a totalitarian gargamel. Gargamel wanted to dominate, not to allow free market.

To have industry in a country that's communist, the iron fist of the government has to exist, or nothing happens. People starve. The first colonists here in America established an egalitarian society where property rights were respected to a small degree, but goods were communal and doled out on the basis of need. They all died because of it.
