The music was made by Jussi Talaskivi (see the other video about 3 way chess, 1:21) in 1999 - 2000. Kill Bills came out 2003-2004. "Lonely Sheppard" is older, but not so known before Kill Bills, I think. Interesting comment, I have to listen if I can find any similarities.
4 dimensional, so you play through time? in any direction. is that why it always looks set up as we, persons in the 3rd dimension, can not perceive the 4th dimension?
The fourth dimension was earlier interpreted as time, but not anymore in modern physics. However, you can always imagine 4th dimension as a "time". In this game the question is about geometric 4th dimension, which is expressed as a projection to 3rd dimension. I hope to add here later on another video to explain this in details.
@dr007Orm What if the 4th dimension is in fact space, but we humans perceive it as time? It would in some way show that antimatter and matter are the same thing.
@phantombadger 4D chess whould probably put everyone off, except the hardiest chess fanatics. I mean, playing though time, like into the past and future of the game would drive people mad with all the information to handle
It is easy to handle the information and play chess in 4th dimension. The problem is to find out when there is a check or chek mate on. Counting all the possibilities needs an effective computer. Outside of this (quite esential practical problem...) all the rest is just simple vector counting or linear algebra...
@infoseeker228 it doesn't mean three dim. for space and one for time . this board has four dimensions of space, and there are four orthogonal axes. you don't see they are orthogonal because we can only notice three space deimensions, so we have to split the "chess board" in several three-dimensional hyper-planes and put them together into a sequence of three-dimensional blocks (like you can split a three-dimensional chessboard into several 2D-chessboards, and put them together.
@infoseeker228 its practically impossible to checkmate the opposite, because of the many ways a king can move. in standerd 2D-chess, there are 8 (eight) positions a king can move at most, which is (3^2)-1. In 3D , this expanded to 26, which is (3^3)-1. So in 4D , a king has (3^4)-1 = 80 possibilities to move (at most). if this game still is playable, there has to be a heigh number of VERY strong chessmen, otherwise you can't checkmate.
@bongobong84 Intresting opinion. Imagine this : In standard chess, a rook moves in a one dimension, which is 1 dimension less than the board's dimensions. Imagine the 3D chess with a rook that controls planes (2D). In that case, 3D chess may be playable.
It is called "VeryLargeChess 2" and very fascinating to play and also easy to learn. Based on the idea of the "Universal Chess" as well as 4D Chess. I might add the description here later on...
Some comments shortly. You say Trichess already exists as "hexagon chess". Yes, there exist several hex chess games and also TriChess was originally "Hexagonal Chess", but the name Frank Harary gave was better, not "dumb". Original chess is naturally The Chess, because it was the first one. Besided there exist also hexagonal "bi-chess" games, e.g. Glinski's one.
The queen on 4D board can move in 80 directions and it is very easy to calculate...
I was kind of hoping for an intense time-traveling chess match... :(
"Ha, my rook takes your queen!"
"Not so fast! My pawn jumps into the time vortex to where your rook was being sculpted and pays the modeler with a lobster dinner to plant an explosive into the rook making him explode before he can take my queen."
"Good try, but I already sent my knight two hours before and gave the modeler a gift certificate and a box of cookies to turn your bishop into an assassin! Check!"
This video isn't very informative, perhaps I'll add later another with more details. But you really can do all those tricks already on this chessboard. Actually you don't even need the 4th dimension, already the 3rd dimension is enough. This board is a combination of 6 "towers" and every tower is one 3-dimensional game. Jumping from tower to tower is kind of "time-traveling"...
This is not for many players, but for 2 players to play using 4 dimensions. If you have hints or links other's that kind, I'm interested. This is independently developed chess variant, which doesn't exclude that there exist also other variants. Human mind is quite skillful.
Yes ... kind of. Time is sometimes called also as kind of "fourth dimension". This viewpoint says, that space and time are components of a four-dimensional manifold, known as spacetime (Minkowsky, Einstein, Poincare...)
You're a bit confused, if this is the 4 spatial dimension chess I know of, my father played it back in college about 30 years ago. And Tri/Quad/penta-chess has been created by people all over when many players want to play at once. You can't really say the university made it when others made it first.

Maybe if "gods" exist, they'd be playing the 4D chess game : our lives.

Nice comment, that reminds me about this:
"Impotent Pieces of the Game He plays
Upon this Chequer-board of Nights and Days;
Hither and thither moves, and checks, and slays,
And one by one back in the Closet lays. "

This game already exists, it called hexagon chess, the board is made of hexagons.
Calling it tri-chess because three people play it is like call regular chess "Bi-chess" really dumb.
It's a nice collage of photos, but your expression of concepts is really lousy.
A Queen on a 3D board could move in 26 directions, I bet you can't calculate what it would be in 4D, and I'm not telling you.
You are highlighting ideas you don't understand. I find this post offensive, and gave it a low rating.

too bad its 8 directions (forward, back, left, right and their diagonals) around the Y axis of each of the 8 directions on the x axis
so 8x8 = 64 directions, common math
