The thing about the Buu saga was their powerlevels had already reached the state where they could annihilate worlds. Compared all of the explosions in DBZ this 'selfdestruct' should have been massive. It literally drained Vegeta into lifeless stone. But it wasn't all that impressive.
Add the fact that Picolo suddenly forgets his 'suicide' speech to Vegeta and tries to run back to save him, the whole scene lost all of its drama for me.
