  • Absolutely loved this series. It used real cvr/twr recordings, was factual and lacked the stupid drama of the american ones. Would love to know where I can buy it.

  • i was there, as a deputy Sheriff and found all kinds of paper, i found a Sickness bag with a kids drawing on it..............even to this day it is very sad

  • The only thing I question is "the note" that was written on an air sickness bag. If everything was blown to bits and pieces how come this bag was not in bits and pieces also, unless they found a bunch of pieces and put them together. Terrible tradigy anyway. You also have to remember that security measures at this time were not like they are today.

  • @cadirector the bag has virtually no mass and has no solid shape. the collision with the ground creates a G force that will destroy the aircraft, the humans inside, etc. However, safety cards, and other things that are light and not rigid will survive a crash unless they burn.

  • @itchyundies ....well my first thought was. A Fighter is tight together, so it can go fast. Air buses are not so much so we can walk around in them. Which makes it easier to tear apart. In the first thought I kept using the word mass. So, the second thought was even at faster speeds less mass is still less mass. The fighter is more dense, but not as heavy.

    To truly see things one has to take out your past and pre knowledge. It has to be seen with new eyes. cont

  • Cheers for uploading this brilliant programme. I remember watching this 10-12 years ago on Channel 4. I even sent away for the book. Great programme and footage. not too gruesome but very informative.

  • @itchyundies Well lockerbie was a different animal. It broke a pary at 31,000 feet. So, of course Its going to have big pieces. If you look up pics of the fuel tanks you see large wholes in the ground and not much in the way of big pieces. The engines are going to fall at or near free fall speed minus the wind resistance, but stay as whole for the most part. Free fall is only at max 9.8m/sec squared or a couple hundred and hour.

    700mph and no pilot makes hand size chunks out of anything.

  • @itchyundies ....to answer this. Most crash based on failure and the crew is doing all they can to stop it, so some can walk away. ~or~ in other words controlled crash. The plane that went down on the Hudson not long ago was all there! Just at the bottom of the Hudson.

    Shoot the crew and the plane does go down totally out of control and at full speed.

  • Where is any documentation of the gun? No footage, no pictures - nothing. Just an old man telling us that a piece of skin was found on the trigger - a piece of skin that was still intact and on the gun after the plane had crashed. Do they honestly think we are all idiots?

  • @marcela2503 At the time airline flight crew were not subject to the same security measures as passengers. This tragedy made FAA change their policy.

  • @marcela2503 They propably let him bypass the x-rays because he was an ex member of the personell.

  • Sorry that your dad was on this one, but they do also use these for training in aviation accident classes. I have to do my final paper in Airport Security on this particular accident.

  • Just think of the money YOU would have made, had the loss of your father caused you to have an idea regarding cockpit security, leading to the design and manufacturing and USE of secure and defensible airline cockpit doors which would have prevented the 9/11 attacks?

  • OMG!!!! Hard to comprehend that someone would take a plane and kill 43 people because he was so bitter about being fired for $69. This horrific disaster is really very disturbing..........

    A note........."Isn't it IRONICAL we end up this way?" Unfortunate the airlines hadn't recognized this guy and put him on a "do not fly" with that airlines... his case was in the middle of an appeal...... hindsight and 43 lives gone. RIP

  • No, flight 93 was caused by terroists who wanted 69 virgins, PSA Flight 1771 was caused by a man who stole 69 smackers from work and got fired over it.

  • I find it surprising that Burke's airline identification was still fully valid, airside, 2 weeks after being sacked.

    I have known two employees who were dismissed. Both were escorted offsite, and their site passes were deactivated.

    When one mounted an (unsuccessful) appeal, he was escorted at all times by two managers, and restricted to the plant's administration area. (He had a history of damaging production equipment and processes).

  • Had Burke used a fake ID he still would have made it through.

    However, had the US used secure and defensible airline cockpit doors like the Israelis used since the late 1960s, not only would the PSA Flt 1771 tragedy been averted, so would the attempted hijacking of FEDEX Flt 705 and the four 9/11 hijackings and most likely the Dawson's Field hijackings of the 1970s.

  • The VNE, or Velocity Never Exceed, of that aircraft is 300 knots. The commenter said the plane hit the ground at over 700 mph which is twice the speed that the aircraft was certified to operate at.

    Regardless, had the aircraft been equipped with bullet resistant cockpit doors that were secure and defensible like the ones the US has used since 9/12/2001 and the Israelis have used since the 1960s to successfully prevent hijackings, this tragedy and others like it could have been averted.

  • the question is not the amount of U$69. It is what he was capable of doing to get his objective. The person who steals a small amount of money is capable of stealing and harmming much more. That´s what he did.

  • It is not the amount of money stolen, but the mentality behind it. A person willing to steal is more likely to violate other rules. The theft was simply a symptom of a bigger problem, and the airline knew it.

  • obviously, a thief is also capable of bringing a gun to work and killing 43 other co-workers. Therefore, if an employee is a thief, he should be sent to the USPS for further employment or the US Army where he can be a Major pain in the ass like Fort Hood's Hasan-of-a-bitch.

  • yeh absolutely! His name's Sean Barratt, I think I rememberh hearing his voice on something recently. He is an excellent narrator and was perfect on this series, I think his voice helped to make it a much more sober and objective documentary, and is much easier on the ears than those silly over dramatised voices they use on the 'Seconds from Disaster' series.
