@OrangeGoatsex Yes, 2 "opera" singers have won. Paul Potts won BGT 3 years ago, and Neal E. Boyd won AGT 2 years ago. Both sang Nessun Dorma, but only one of them has a steady career of touring with his concerts: Paul.
BTW, none of the people on these programs are OPERA singers, but singing OPERA ARIAS (songs). Opera singers would never compete in anything so mediocre. There are classical singing contests out there and they're brutal. Even the losers have fantastic voices.
I am not an opera expert but I have heard many singers singing Puccini's compositions ( including godess Maria Callas) and I have to say that all of them are by far better than Barbara, people don't understan that this is just a contest for ordinary people if you go to Italy ( for example ) you will find real opera singers not amateur like Barbara, listen how bad it sounds when she sings " ci voglio aaaaaaandare "

The entire world shocked to have Skinner win with a little chicken hand song he sang over this magnificent beauty of classic voice that should have won and beat no two ways about who had won that contest however like the other tv talent shows there looking for someone who will be packaged just right to sell million of record sales for the multitudes and they just thought she wouldnt sell that many cds with opera,oh well where has Hollywood gone today.

She's a VERY beautiful lady on the outside & on the inside! Even when she was bald, she was still beautiful... And she sings REALLY well! She should have made it ALL THE WAY! I'm not sure if she still has cancer but if she does, I hope it will go away soon.

It's a joke that Skinner beat out Barbara. The votes were split by 10 competitors, not a head to head competition. Skinner would have had no chance performing against Barbara in a one to one competition. I can't believe that they changed the format of the show like that.

i commend her for her performance, but as a trained Opera singer myself, her voice is just good. Not spectacular, but good. I'm sure she will have no problems getting into a good company now, but do not compare her to greats such as Callas. That's an insult to the people before her.

I am a two time cancer survivor, but this is not what this is about. Barbara has talent and SHOULD have won this contest. That hillbilly could not carry a note and america was encouraged by Mr. Morgan through his comments to vote for him. He probably did not want another opera singer to win. Bottom line is....who will pay to see the hillbilly sing in vegas? Not me. I am searching to find Barbara and that's who I will pay for.

No jealousy at all. I am sick of people saying that she is on the level of Callas. Hell...even Brightman when she is not. A true lover of the classics would notice her faults immediately compared to the greats. I urge you to look into Michael Bolton for his "Secret Passion" for the level of opera you are akin to. Otherwise, listen to the greats (Callas, Dame Sutherland, Fleming, and Scotto) and hear what true Opera sounds like. She has a decent voice, but not of the highest caliber.

My, there are a lot of truly catty remarks here. We are dealing here with a woman who is pretty and who sings well. She's on America's Got Talent, not the metropolitan opera house or wherever. Compared to the rest of the "talent" offered, she's outstanding. And given the tendency of Americans to hate opera, it is amazing that she's been voted into the finals. It's a good sign that everyone does not love Lady Ga Ga (GAG, Gag).
I like Sarah too. The thing is Barbara has a maturity about her that comes out, not as a more polished performance since both are great, but with a lot more emotion. The Met awaits.

She is a professional singer who has been on tv in MExico, she does not deserve to win. On the other hand Kevin Skinner is just an average Joe, who deserve to win.
Look guys, Kevin Skinner sang one decent song in his first audition. Since then he has sucked terribly. You have to resist the hype. I know Barbara is a cancer survivor, so she has a story but nobody can deny that she is very talented. Terry Fator was a professional ventriloquist before AGT. I don't hear anyone crying foul about his win. I had high hopes for Kevin too. But he has been dismal in his last two performances.

I love her voice and if it was not for this show I would never have heard it. All that other stuff below that is trying to sound negative...So What!!! Who Cares!!! Training for years or just pure talent doesn't matter to me. Because in the end you have it or you don't no matter how bad you want it.
Is she trying for an opera career? No. She is on America's Got Talent and she is the best singer on that platform, bar none. I have never realy watched shows like american idol or america's got talent, but I did see the episode where she performed in the semifinals. She is truely amazing. for those of you putting down her technique, remember this she has not had ANY formal training. You are compareing her to those that have spent their lives and a fortune on training. She in my opinion is just as good as thoughs that have been formaly trained.

im sorry but who ever says opera singers need to acts has obvoisly never heard of the Tree Tenors, or more specifically Poverotti.... they don't act... but they are never the less thought of as opera singers.... Opera is not only a theater form, but also a genre of music. You can belong to the genre but not the theater. And her voice is amazing raw talent, that is obviously a gift from God. Who ever doesn't understand that does not understand true music. True music is something your born with.
The problem with supposed "opera singers" coming on shows like this is that the judges themselves don't know anything about the craft, so with untrained ears they shell out undue compliments. If you want to sing opera, truly measure yourself against opera singers that are working in the real opera business.
The positive thing at least is that people that would normally not be exposed to "opera" learn to appreciate it, even though it may not be at its highest level...
Spend time learning something about true vocal technique and then come back with an opinion backed by some kind of real knowledge in professional singing and pedagogy. She has considerably glaring inconsistencies in her technique.

I was just curious why you get so angry when somene's opinion is different from yours. If you look at posts on today's opera stars like Rene Fleming singing the same aria, you see that they are criticized a lot harsher, yet nobody gets mad as you do or marks down negative opinions.
Dissent does not anger me. What angers me is that people tend to come across as being derogatory, saying that Barbara is not a true opera singer just because she doesn't perform in a theatrical production, or because she doesn't perform with a vast orchestra supporting her.

Alexis, Barbara has a music degree, Master's in music I believe, so she did have training. Everyone agrees she is an excellent singer with a very beautiful voice. There is some discussion between a couple of opera singers of whether or not she could sing in a full opera, unamplified which is very different from singing an aria in concert and with a microphone. She did in the past, I think, and I think she still can.
I am the daughter of an Opera Singer & an Opera Singer myself. Just as in any other profession, a person who studies to enter a profession assumes that title upon completion of the course of study or by passing an examination. Neither an accountant, nor an engineer loses their title, whether or not they actively practice their profession, are paid to do so, or even do a good job, regardless of the location, length of performance, or any other external situation. Respectfully, I disagree!! I am a trained OPERA singer but have had to retire. The fact is!.......after rounds of chemotherapy she should NOT be able to sing well at all but she HAS beaten those odds and she sings with excellence, still could use a bit of tweaking but I only have minor advice. Such grace and natural elegance and vocal control that is incredible!!! xo
I agree - she has a beautiful "CLASSICAL" voice. but I am talking about the type of Opera singing that is done without a mike... My daughter is a former opera singer also... she never used a mike and memorized compelete roles, but one does not have to sing complete operas to be "opera/clasically trained".. She will have a WONDERFUL CAREER. SHE DESERVES IT.
I am curious - do you base this conclusion on her technique or just on the fact she uses a mike now? In all fairness, this isn't an opera theater and acoustics may be bad. She is singing to a recorded music that may itself be amplified. The audience is loud. Now, I don't think she is looking for an opera career, AGT isn't this type of a competition, but I do think she has an operatic voice. We don't know how she'd sounded with a good orchestra and time to warm up - I read she was given none.
I think you either need to go clean your ears out with a Q-tip, or you need to go take a class on Music Appreciation. To say that Barbara is not a true opera singer is almost as bad as saying that Michelangelo is not a true artist. Ridiculous.

Difference between her and Paul Potts is that Potts' voice would never be able to make into a serious operatic career, whereas she could actually sing real operatic roles if she polished her technique and auditioned for a real operatic company.
But Paul Potts has already sold a few million albums, he already HAS a career in the music industry. He has been very successful in his operatic career...but if I had to choose between him and Barbara Padilla I definitely prefer Barbara. Did you hear Barbara's performance on Tuesday? He has not sung in real operatic roles. And Sydney Opera House hosts various performances most of which are not operas. Standing on a stage singing a couple of arias from an opera doesn't make you an opera singer. Has Potts memorized entire operatic roles and sung them on stage? No. Therefore he is not an opera singer. I don't want to argue with you anymore. If you disagree with me suit yourself.

She's a VERY beautiful lady on the outside & on the inside! Even when she was bald, she was still beautiful... And she sings REALLY well! She should have made it ALL THE WAY! I'm not sure if she still has cancer but if she does, I hope it will go away soon.

It's a joke that Skinner beat out Barbara. The votes were split by 10 competitors, not a head to head competition. Skinner would have had no chance performing against Barbara in a one to one competition. I can't believe that they changed the format of the show like that.

i commend her for her performance, but as a trained Opera singer myself, her voice is just good. Not spectacular, but good. I'm sure she will have no problems getting into a good company now, but do not compare her to greats such as Callas. That's an insult to the people before her.

I am a two time cancer survivor, but this is not what this is about. Barbara has talent and SHOULD have won this contest. That hillbilly could not carry a note and america was encouraged by Mr. Morgan through his comments to vote for him. He probably did not want another opera singer to win. Bottom line is....who will pay to see the hillbilly sing in vegas? Not me. I am searching to find Barbara and that's who I will pay for.

No jealousy at all. I am sick of people saying that she is on the level of Callas. Hell...even Brightman when she is not. A true lover of the classics would notice her faults immediately compared to the greats. I urge you to look into Michael Bolton for his "Secret Passion" for the level of opera you are akin to. Otherwise, listen to the greats (Callas, Dame Sutherland, Fleming, and Scotto) and hear what true Opera sounds like. She has a decent voice, but not of the highest caliber.

Do you know what opera as an art form is? An Opera singer does not use a microphone. Pure and simple. I wasn't saying take away and don't ever let her sing again. I bet if she took the microphone away and sang with her heart and a big powerful voice came out it would be more to love. You should research what opera truly is. 1. dont be an idiot, it's a TV show, they have to have a microphone somewhere to get the sound to your tv, might as well be in front of her. 2. Andrea Bochelli uses a microphone, and if you say he doesn't sing opera, you're a tard. and 3. dont try to be a pompus ass, just admit that she's good, and enjoy it for what it is. an untrained, cancer surviving, mother, who's never sang before, singing on what will become a comparable level to Maria Callas with some practice.

Look guys, Kevin Skinner sang one decent song in his first audition. Since then he has sucked terribly. You have to resist the hype. I know Barbara is a cancer survivor, so she has a story but nobody can deny that she is very talented. Terry Fator was a professional ventriloquist before AGT. I don't hear anyone crying foul about his win. I had high hopes for Kevin too. But he has been dismal in his last two performances.

I have never realy watched shows like american idol or america's got talent, but I did see the episode where she performed in the semifinals. She is truely amazing. for those of you putting down her technique, remember this she has not had ANY formal training. You are compareing her to those that have spent their lives and a fortune on training. She in my opinion is just as good as thoughs that have been formaly trained.

im sorry but who ever says opera singers need to acts has obvoisly never heard of the Tree Tenors, or more specifically Poverotti.... they don't act... but they are never the less thought of as opera singers.... Opera is not only a theater form, but also a genre of music. You can belong to the genre but not the theater. And her voice is amazing raw talent, that is obviously a gift from God. Who ever doesn't understand that does not understand true music. True music is something your born with.

The problem with supposed "opera singers" coming on shows like this is that the judges themselves don't know anything about the craft, so with untrained ears they shell out undue compliments. If you want to sing opera, truly measure yourself against opera singers that are working in the real opera business.
The positive thing at least is that people that would normally not be exposed to "opera" learn to appreciate it, even though it may not be at its highest level...

I was just curious why you get so angry when somene's opinion is different from yours. If you look at posts on today's opera stars like Rene Fleming singing the same aria, you see that they are criticized a lot harsher, yet nobody gets mad as you do or marks down negative opinions.

Dissent does not anger me. What angers me is that people tend to come across as being derogatory, saying that Barbara is not a true opera singer just because she doesn't perform in a theatrical production, or because she doesn't perform with a vast orchestra supporting her.

Alexis, Barbara has a music degree, Master's in music I believe, so she did have training. Everyone agrees she is an excellent singer with a very beautiful voice. There is some discussion between a couple of opera singers of whether or not she could sing in a full opera, unamplified which is very different from singing an aria in concert and with a microphone. She did in the past, I think, and I think she still can.

Just as in any other profession, a person who studies to enter a profession assumes that title upon completion of the course of study or by passing an examination. Neither an accountant, nor an engineer loses their title, whether or not they actively practice their profession, are paid to do so, or even do a good job, regardless of the location, length of performance, or any other external situation. The fact is!.......after rounds of chemotherapy she should NOT be able to sing well at all but she HAS beaten those odds and she sings with excellence, still could use a bit of tweaking but I only have minor advice. My daughter is a former opera singer also... she never used a mike and memorized compelete roles, but one does not have to sing complete operas to be "opera/clasically trained".. I am curious - do you base this conclusion on her technique or just on the fact she uses a mike now? In all fairness, this isn't an opera theater and acoustics may be bad. She is singing to a recorded music that may itself be amplified. The audience is loud. Now, I don't think she is looking for an opera career, AGT isn't this type of a competition, but I do think she has an operatic voice. We don't know how she'd sounded with a good orchestra and time to warm up - I read she was given none.

I said serious operatic career. That means singing in a real opera house, with no microphone, in real operatic roles. Paul Potts has not had a real operatic career. He's sold albums and sang at concerts. He has NOT sung in a real opera house in real operatic roles.

Paul HAS sung in real opera houses, he has sung at the Sydney Opera House. I prefer Barbara, but I hate your derogatory comments about Paul. He's a great opera singer as well, even though not as good as Barbara.

He has not sung in real operatic roles. And Sydney Opera House hosts various performances most of which are not operas. Standing on a stage singing a couple of arias from an opera doesn't make you an opera singer. Has Potts memorized entire operatic roles and sung them on stage? No. Therefore he is not an opera singer. I don't want to argue with you anymore. If you disagree with me suit yourself.
