FWIW - I had exactly the same problem with a Line6 UX2. Firmware fixed part of it, and after about 180 hours on-time, the rest of the problem literally faded away. I wonder if something in the circuit needs to "burn in". Seriously.
got a good one 4 u all...same shit happened to me.so I got the newest firmware..but after some time the fucking pice of shit that this unit is fuck 4 good.....
I solved this problem by switching to Mac. Not a real solution for most, but I was wanting to make the switch and it happened to do the trick. Turns out, it most likely has to do with the chipset that's in your FireWire bus. Not something that's advertised or easy to find. Quite a pain. Very happy with how the MOTU works on a Mac, however.
I have the ultralite as well and it does this same thing exactly. Make sure you are running the NEWEST FIRMWARE - I believe it was something like 1.15 or something like that. It seemed to clear up my issue, it happens now and again though.
ive had promblems wiv my motu 828mk2 usb on 64bit windows 7 , the play bac is fuzzing and the sound output , wen i record something in wavelab , and swicth bac too my old school mi4 it plays wat it has recorded from motu fine , the sound is just fucked , i dont no if it is winddows 7 or motu drivers , cause wen i was on xp the 828mk2 worked fine tryed phoneing motu but no answer , and i love my motu but starting too hate them on the lack of support
I had that problem too, but it's running perfect now. If the Ultralite is crackling or making noise check if your harddrive has enough of free space and if you don't have too many stuff on your desktop.
Ummmm jusy unplug your lap-top.......not too difficult...its just the AC power supply running a curent through your system....I find it amazing how many people dont know this??
same issue on my m-audio fw 1814, i might point you directly on the firewire port as what the others have said here. try to buy a separate fw port with the TI(texas instrument) chipset.
I have the same problem with my Ultralite MkII when I chain it with an M-AUDIO Firewire Audiophile, I think one firewire doesn't support both. In a single mode works just fine with XP (until now). I never use it with any audio software like Cubase, Virtual DJ, Soundforge, GigaStudio. Maybe you should try a diffrent firewire or to use an PCI FIREWIRE ADAPTER.
My motu does the exact same thing, it does it worse when you boot in Vista... I think it's as soon as the windows drivers load, it's causing an issue with the motu. That's what I think anyway.
LOts of documentation on the internet that tend to point to this as well. I think Vista needs an update on their audio drivers to work better with MOTU drivers, that's what I think.
hi,, im motu's ultralite user and works fine.. so im watching that your ultralite is over the monitor speaker, please check if the monitor speaker is magnet shielded, and try to check the ultralite far from the monitor speaker..

Only had this problem while using it on FW phantom power. As soon as I hooked up the external power adapter, the problem was solved.

Nope. This is a major issue with MOTU. Driver/hardware freakout.

This is a common iussue. When firewire chipset (PC) is not fully compatibile.
You must have a Firewire port with Texas Instrument Chipset. Altough i've experimented a successiful Ricoh one.
External FW ports (PCMCIA, PC Espress) partially solve the problem.

What's sad is that the only videos on youtube from a search of MOTU Ultralite are ones that are apparently broken,.
Dammit. I'm still buying one though. I'l selling my Apogee duet in 3 days for $400.
And I found an Ultralite for $570 used in BC.

it has nothing to do with magnetically shielded monitors, trust me, it's a driver issue.

Disable hardware video acceleration in Display properties, that worked for me!

I will try that myself, I would have thought it would have been with Vista's audio driver though, myself.

same thing happens to my PC. Its a shame because the interface is great. DAMN PC!!!

With TC konnect 24D it doesnt work so well in Mac, but with PC works well. Bummer! I might go for the Ultralite.
