  • One can only be judged within the context of the times in which they lived; not by modern revisionists. Kate Smith was and is an American icon for WW2 just as George M. Cohan was for WW1. She was a decent loyal America. Anyone who derides her for this is just a fustrated race baiter who hates our country and way of life. R.I.P. Kate, you are still relevant in my life. I cry every time I hear God Bless America. If only we could return to your times. Indeed, God Bless America.

  • @FrancisGalton - it is satire when Paul Robeson sings it. Not so much when it's Kate Smith.

  • so this is why philly loves her so much

  • I just heard this song for the first time. How appalling.

  • @thelmah05 How is it appalling? Did you actually listen to the lyrics or research the history of the song? It was a satirical indictment of racism. You people are so thin-skinned. Ha! Ha!

  • @FrancisGalton the race card is always thrown in when stupidity is the real problem

  • mad racist.....

  • Yawn.....

  • Was really sorry this was cut short.

  • I read about that song on Wikapedia about Kate Smith. Who wrote that song?

  • @Soulthinker2007 That's Why Darkies Were Born was a popular song written by Ray Henderson and Lew Brown. It originated in George White's Scandals of 1931. It was most famously recorded by Kate Smith, whose rendition was a hit in 1931, and by Paul Robeson.
