The IRA started killing off duty British personnel before the British responded in kind, but it seems like the IRA and RUC were using the tactic from the beginning. Among others, the RUC tried to kill then unarmed Brendan Hughes. He was injured but his commander, Gerry Adams, got him a doctor in time. As for being on active service Seamus Grew and Roddy Carroll were simply shot.

@mst3k4evur It was the IRA who targeted most of their military victims when they were off duty, I know you wont accept that but its the truth mate. The British didnt start covert operations against the IRA until about 1978 and yes they did kill IRA members when they were unarmed but they were still on active service such as moving weapons or checking arms dumps or scouting targets. The IRA choose first though to start shooting off duty soldiers and cops so they can have no complaints.

The IRA started killing off duty British personnel before the British responded in kind, but it seems like the IRA and RUC were using the tactic from the beginning. Among others, the RUC tried to kill then unarmed Brendan Hughes. He was injured but his commander, Gerry Adams, got him a doctor in time. As for being on active service Seamus Grew and Roddy Carroll were simply shot.

@mst3k4evur The RUC were collectively awarded the GC for bravery and when you consider the amount of people they lost compared to the amount they killed then I consider them heroic for holding the line, many other forces would have folded. The SAS and DET lost hardly any personnel, their role was different to the RUC who had the unfortunate job of being exposed to the terrorist threat 24/7.
